Dina Danish – Re-Play: Back in 10 Minutes

SpazioA gallery ha il piacere di presentare Sabato 19 Maggio 2012 alle ore 18, "Re-Play: Back in 10 Minutes", prima mostra personale in Italia dell’artista Egiziana Dina Danish, vincitrice del premio “Illy Present Future” ad Artissima 18, 2011.

In "Re-Play: Back in 10 Minutes", Dina Danish presenta due gruppi di lavori nati dalla riflessione su cosa significa ri-produrre, ricreare ed imitare i propri stessi lavori.
Nel 2011, Danish ha realizzato un video, Halim: The Dark Whistling Nightingale. Nel video, usando la mano e la voce, Danish interpreta un filmato di repertorio in cui il cantante egiziano Abdel Halim Hafez canta di una tragica storia d’amore (Qareat Al Fingan). Danish analizza il momento in cui Halim, infastidito dai fischi della platea, si gratta la testa e smette di cantare. Il suo romantico personaggio di scena va in pezzi quando l’uomo restituisce il fischio alla platea.
Solo di recente, e al termine di una lunga ricerca, Danish ha reperito il materiale girato che documenta l’episodio, che le ha consentito di avvicinarsi a quello che può essere davvero accaduto durante quello spettacolo. Danish presenta dunque un nuovo gruppo di lavori che reinterpretano e ricreano questo incidente. I lavori hanno titoli come The mysterious suit (l’abito misterioso), The audience members with referee whistles (membri del pubblico con fischietti da arbitro), STOP IT! (basta!) e To the singer and the poet (al cantante e poeta).
Il secondo gruppo di lavori ruota attorno alle questioni poste dalla standardizzazione rispetto alla specificità di forma, dimensione e colore. Le macchine sono eccellenti quando si tratta di standardizzare e riprodurre in modo sistematico oggetti identici e perfetti.
Nel 2008, Dina Danish aveva realizzato Back in 10 Minutes: composta da un ampio piano di un tavolo quadrato su cui erano state dipinte le parole che ne formano il titolo, l’opera espandeva i confini di un banale post-it, trasformandolo in un voluminoso oggetto tridimensionale, per attirare l’attenzione sulla grafia dell’artista e la pratica informale di annunciare l’assenza.
Questo dipinto, insieme a un altro che raffigurava un foglio di carta legale statunitense privo di scritte, erano stati affidati all’amico e mentore di Danish a San Francisco, avviando un prolungato dialogo tra i due attorno all’idea di riprodurre questi lavori e in generale alla standardizzazione nei processi artistici.
Il rifacimento di alcuni dei suoi vecchi lavori serve a Danish come punto di partenza per la mostra, al fine di indagare l’uso dell’imitazione in contrasto con la ricreazione attraverso la semplice copia manuale.

Dina Danish (nata a Parigi, Francia, 1981; vive e lavora ad Amsterdam) ha studiato presso l’American University del Cairo, ed ha conseguito nel 2008 il MFA al California College of the Arts, San Francisco.
Ha preso parte a mostre collettive e personali presso il Kunsthall, Oslo; il SFMOMA, San Francisco; il CIC, Cairo in collaborazione con il Kunsthalle di Berna ed ha esposto presso il Padiglione del Cairo alla biennale di Amsterdam.
Tra le mostre personali a cui ha preso parte segnaliamo: "Shmina Shmanish", 2011, Jeanine Hofland Contemporary Art, Amsterdam; "A Matter of Time", 2011, Barbara Seiler Galerie, Zurich. Più recentemente ha esposto nella mostre collettive "Two Versions of The Imaginary", Annet Gelink Gallery, Amsterdam e "A Brand New Baby Carriage standing there on the Porch", Barbara Seiler Galerie, Zurich.
Ha ricevuto premi come “Illy Present Future Award” nel 2011 ad Artissima 18, Torino ed il “Barclay Simpson Award”, San Francisco ed è stata finalista per il “SECA Art Award”, SFMOMA. Le residenze a cui ha preso parte includono quelle al Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten di Amsterdam; alla Fondazione Spinola Banna Per L’Arte, Torino e al PiST///, Istanbul.

SpazioA gallery is pleased to present on Saturday May 19, 2012 at 6.00 p.m., "Re-Play: Back in 10 Minutes", the first solo show in Italy by Egyptian artist Dina Danish, winner of Artissima 18’s “Illy Present Future” award, 2011.

For "Re-Play: Back in 10 Minutes", Dina Danish will present two bodies of work, which stem from the notion of what it means to re-produce, recreate and mimic one’s own works.
In 2011, Danish created a video, Halim: The Dark Whistling Nightingale. In the video, using her hand and voice, Danish interprets a found video in which Egyptian singer Abdel Halim Hafez performs a tragic love story (Qareat Al Fingan). Danish investigates the moment in which Halim, irritated by the audience’s whistling, scratches his head and stops performing. His romantic stage persona collapses when he tries to whistle back at the audience.
Only recently and after conducting extensive research does Danish stumble upon footage and evidence regarding this specific incident making her come closer to what might have really taken place during this performance. Thus, Danish will present a new body of work reinterpreting and recreating this specific incident. The work ranges from the mysterious suit, the audience members with referee whistles, STOP IT! to the singer and the poet.
The second body of work addresses the values and concerns towards standardization in regards to the specificity of form, size and color. Machines excel in standardizing and systematically re-producing perfect, identical objects.
In 2008, Dina Danish created Back in 10 Minutes. Composed of a large square table top with the words ‘back in 10 minutes’ painted onto it, the work pushed the form of the commonly used post-it note into a large 3-D object, drawing attention to the artist’s handwriting and the casual practice of announcing absence.
This painting together with another depicting a blank sheet of standard US legal paper were given to Danish’s friend and mentor in San Francisco, which resulted in an ongoing conversation between the two around the idea of reproducing these works and standardization in the artistic process. In recreating some of her earlier pieces Danish uses this as a starting point to this exhibition to navigate the use of mimicry in contrast with recreating by simply copying with her own hand.
