The Paolo Erbetta Gallery is proud to present the solo exhibition titled “Cyclorama” by the young French artist, Laure Catugier (Toulouse, France 1982 – she currently lives and works in Berlin). Laure Catugier first studied architecture at the l’École d’Architecture de Toulouse before embarking on her second degree in fine arts at the Fine Arts school of Toulouse, France (Beaux-Arts de Toulouse). Despite having only recently decided to focus primarily on artistic projects, Catugier has already developed a strong and mature style.
The title “Cyclorama” is derived from panoramas, which were particularly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Panoramas were set in circular rooms where the walls would provide a 360 degree unbroken view of a whole region which surrounded the observer. This concept is perfectly suited to Catugier’s work, particularly her works on cities, buildings and architecture.
Each element – every window, balcony, door or view – embodies an illusion of social homogeny and categorisation; the artist uses these elements to imagine and present new interpretations, forms of rebellion and empty spaces. Every man-made structure makes up part of the stage in the “theatre of life”. Aside from clarity and minimalism underlying the linear and basic geometric forms, a strong emotional tension is nevertheless evident in Catugier’s work. Closed windows indicate a retreat from the outside world and offer a respite or pause; the shutters function as a stage curtain behind which “actors” can take a break from the performance; ghost windows are also present, and although they do not exist, they enable the viewer to reflect and feel their absence. Catugier explores social values and cultural trends in the architecture and designs inherent in our world. Her works provide a starting point in order to reflect on possible visions of life, which can be imagined by the artist and viewer alike. For Catugier, imagination is the only escape from reality.
The artist wanders around Berlin and the world with a camera in her hand – these walks encapsulate the essence of a true goethian “Wanderung”. Catugier’s works consist of glimpses and everyday objects; few people take the time to really observe such everyday objects as they are completely absorbed in their roles of day-to-day lives. The artist provides us with a new view of the world, one that pays more attention to the daily scenarios that take place around us. Bearing this in mind, Catugier’s works never portray people directly; rather they show their reflection, their trace.

Die Galerie Paolo Erbetta freut sich, Ihnen die Ausstellung der jungen französischen Künstlerin Laure Catugier (geboren 1982 in Toulouse, Frankreich - lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) mit dem Titel „Cyclorama“ präsentieren zu dürfen. Laure Catugier studierte zunächst Architektur an der École d' Architecture de Toulouse, um später mit einem Diplom in Kunstgeschichte an der École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse abzuschließen. Auch wenn sie erst seit kurzer Zeit beschlossen hat, sich voll auf ihre eigene künstlerische Arbeit zu fokussieren, kann ihr Blick als bereits sehr scharf und ausgereift beschrieben werden.
Der Titel „Cyclorama“ ist angelehnt an die eigentümlichen und besonders zwischen dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert populären Panoramen. Diese bestanden in kreisförmigen Räumen, deren Wände mit 360°-Ansichten versehen waren, um für den Betrachter die Illusion zu schaffen, vollständig von einer bestimmten Szenerie umgeben zu sein. Ein solches Konzept eignet sich besonders gut, um die Auffassung Catugiers beispielsweise von der Stadt, ihren Gebäuden und der Architektur darzustellen. Jedes Fenster, jeder Balkon, jede Tür oder Ansicht, verkörpert die Illusion von sozialer Homogenisierung und Kategorisierung, in welcher sich der Künstler dagegen neue Interpretationen, Aufstände, Resignationen und Leerstellen vorstellen kann. Jedes vom Menschen errichtete Gebäude ist Teil der Inszenierung des "Theaters des Lebens". Neben Klarheit und Minimalismus in der Auswahl linearer und grundlegender geometrischer Formen, ist das Werk Catugiers nicht ohne eine starke emotionale Spannung. Geschlossene Fenster, welche die Bereitschaft andeuten, sich aus der Welt zurückzuziehen und eine Pause einzulegen; die Rollläden sind somit ebenso Bühnenvorhänge, hinter denen die "Schauspieler" eine Auszeit von ihrer Rolle nehmen können; auch "Geisterfenster" (Ghost Windows), die nicht als solche existieren, wenngleich man ihr Fehlen bemerkt. Über die Sprache der Architektur und des Design versucht Catugier gesellschaftlichen Werten und kulturellen Mustern nachzuforschen, die uns jederzeit umgeben. Ihre Werke stellen einen Anreiz zum Nachdenken über mögliche Lebensentwürfe dar, die vom Künstler - und vielleicht auch vom Zuschauer - imaginiert werden können. Die Phantasie ist die einzige Möglichkeit, der Realität zu entkommen.
Die Künstlerin wandert mit ihrer Kamera durch Berlin und die Welt, ziellos, in einer wahrhaftigen ‚goetheschen Wanderung’. Ihre Arbeit handelt von Einblicken und Alltagsgegenständen, die nur wenige von uns bemerken, wenn sie ganz in ihren Rollen aufgehen. Die Künstlerin leiht uns ihren Blick für oftmals unbemerkte Alltagssituationen, die uns umgeben und die ebenso von uns sprechen. Genau mit diesem Ziel haben die Arbeiten von Catugier nie den Menschen als Protagonisten, sondern nur sein Spiegelbild, eine Spur von ihm.

La Paolo Erbetta Gallery è lieta di presentare la personale della giovane artista francese Laure Catugier (Tolosa, Francia 1982 - vive e lavora a Berlino) dal titolo: “Cyclorama”.
Laure Catugier ha studiato in un primo momento architettura presso l’École d’Architecture de Toulouse, per poi prendere il diploma in arte presso la scuola di belle arti di Tolosa (Beaux-Arts de Toulouse), Francia. Sebbene solo di recente abbia deciso di concentrarsi su una propria ricerca artistica, il suo sguardo è già molto forte e maturo.
Il titolo “Cyclorama” è preso in prestito da curiose scenografie in voga tra XVIII e XIX secolo, stanze circolari con le pareti ricoperte da vedute a 360°, le quali creavano nello spettatore l'illusione di essere circondato da un panorama. Questo concetto si presta perfettamente a rappresentare la percezione di Catugier della città, deii palazzi, dell’architettura. Ogni finestra, porta, balcone o scorcio rappresenta l’illusione di omologazione e categorizzazione sociale, nella quale, l’artista si immagina nuove interpretazioni, ribellioni, rassegnazioni e mancanze. Ogni struttura eretta dall’uomo partecipa alla messa in scena del teatro della vita. Pulita, minimalista nella scelta di forme lineari ed essenziali, Catugier non per questo priva le sue opere di una forte carica emotiva. Finestre chiuse che segnano la volontà di ritirarsi dal mondo e di prendersi una pausa da questa rappresentazione; le serrande diventano così anche sipari, dietro i quali gli “attori” si possono riposare dal proprio ruolo. Finestre fantasma (Ghost windows), finestre che non esistono e delle quali, però, si percepisce la mancanza.
Attraverso il linguaggio dell’architettura e del design, Catugier esplora il valore sociale e i modelli culturali insiti in ciò che ci circonda. Le sue opere sono spunto di riflessione di vite immaginate dall’artista e forse anche dallo spettatore. L’immaginazione è l’unica possibilità di fuga dalla realtà.
L’artista si aggira per Berlino, e per il mondo, con la sua macchina fotografica, senza una meta, in una vera e propria Wanderung goethiana. La sua ricerca è fatta di scorci e oggetti quotidiani, che in pochi notano in quanto assorti nel proprio ruolo. L’artista ci presta però il suo sguardo, più attento, verso scenari quotidiani, spesso inosservati, che ci circondano e che parlano di noi. Esattamente con questo scopo, queste opere di Catugier non hanno mai persone come protagonisti, ma solo il loro riflesso, la loro traccia.
