La Galleria Vistamare inaugura il 4 ottobre 2014 un’esposizione di Rosa Barba con Leonor Antunes, Daniel Roth ed Ettore Spalletti.

In occasione della prima mostra complessiva a Vistamare, Barba presenta una selezione di opere, di cui alcune realizzate espressamente per la galleria. Di queste, tre sono le sue note sculture filmiche, una è una grande opera in feltro, un’altra un oggetto realizzato con filtri colorati, poi un lavoro composto di sei grossi calchi di gesso che in superficie rivelano le impronte di migliaia di lettere di stampo tipografico.

Il cinema è da sempre il punto di partenza del lavoro di Barba, a prescindere dalla presenza o meno dei suoi elementi letterali: proiettore, celluloide, schermo. Delle tre sculture filmiche, solo due proiettano un'immagine – mentre la pellicola della terza, che proietta luce bianca, reca in sé una colonna sonora ottica.

Attraverso le sue installazioni, Rosa Barba persegue una personalissima esplorazione del cinema e della sua capacità di essere allo stesso tempo mezzo astratto, un veicolo informativo, e oggetto materico dalle forme plastiche. In sculture come Focus Puller 2013, l’artista si interroga sul ruolo dello schermo, che a tratti appare superfluo, e diversamente si rivela aldilà di convenzioni formali come una superficie che riceve informazioni.

Nel grande lavoro intitolato Sea Sick Passenger 2014, Barba riprende il linguaggio formale già avviato con i precedenti schermi realizzati in feltro, introducendo al contempo elementi nuovi. L’ampia tela quadrata invece di scendere dal soffitto, poggia sul pavimento, sollevata lievemente da terra quel tanto da generare un’ombra. Come altri lavori, anche questo appare di difficile lettura, costringendo l’osservatore a una sola prospettiva fruibile: quella di guardare verso il basso mentre ci cammina sopra. Il corpo del lettore viene così introdotto in una sorta di matrice cinematica che mima il movimento del braccio della macchina da scrivere, col suo scattare avanti e indietro sulla pagina.

Oltre a presentare le proprie opere, Rosa Barba ha invitato tre altri artisti a partecipare alla mostra. Trova così modo di dialogare, all’interno di un medesimo spazio, con Ettore Spalletti, Daniel Roth e Leonor Antunes. Ha chiesto a ciascuno di realizzare un’opera partendo dallo spunto fornito da un oggetto che ha inviato loro o dalla conversazione avuta insieme. Spalletti ha ricevuto degli strumenti per l’incisione su marmo, barre colorate in argento con punte dorate; con Roth, Rosa Barba ha discusso dell’interpretazione del paesaggio come oggetto; infine ha consegnato ad Antunes un barattolo di pigmenti blu. I lavori generati dai reciproci scambi artistici saranno presenti in stanze differenti per tutta la durata della mostra. Barba non ha in alcun modo influenzato o seguito l’iter creativo delle singole opere, che penetreranno subitaneamente all’interno dell’esposizione come ‘objets trouvés’.

Rosa Barba (Agrigento, 1972) vive e lavora a Berlino.

Ha studiato presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Colonia, in seguito è stata artista residente presso la Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten di Amsterdam.

On 4th October 2014 Galleria Vistamare inaugurates an exhibition of the work of Rosa Barba with Leonor Antunes, Daniel Roth and Ettore Spalletti.

For her first comprehensive exhibition with the gallery, Rosa Barba presents a selection of new and existing works. These include three of her projector sculptures, a major new felt work, an object full of lighting gels, six large plaster casts containing the imprint of thousands of letterpress print blocks. Film is always a point of departure in Barba’s work, whether or not it contains the literal elements of projector, celluloid and screen. Of the three projector sculptures, only two of them actually present an image – the film on the third has no image but instead carries an optical soundtrack.

Through her installations, Rosa Barba continues her exploration of film and its capacity to simultaneously be an immaterial medium that carries information and a physical material with sculptural properties. These projector sculptures, like Focus Puller 2013 included in the show, often question the role of the screen, sometimes even making it redundant, dispensing altogether with the formal conventions of how a surface receives information.

The large felt square Sea Sick Passenger 2014 develops the formal language of previous felt ‘screens’ and introduces new elements. Its aspect ratio moves from 35mm’s wide rectangle to the square image of 16mm. Instead of being hung from the ceiling, it is laid out on the floor, slightly elevated so it just about casts a shadow. Like its predecessors, it is difficult to read, but especially so due to its scale and placement on the floor. The only perspective from which it is legible is looking down as you walk it. The reader’s body is introduced into the cinematic matrix, mimicking the movement of a typewriter arm across the page before scuttling back to begin the next line.

In addition to presenting these works, she has extended an invitation to three other artists to participate in her solo exhibition. Barba has entered a dialogue with Ettore Spalletti, Daniel Roth and Leonor Antunes and asked each to respond to an object she has sent them, or conversation they have had together. Spalletti received a set of marble carving tools, silver coloured rods with golden tips; she had a conversation with Roth about landscape as object; and gave Antunes a jar of blue pigment. The resulting pieces will be installed in their own rooms throughout the exhibition. Barba has no input into these works – in terms of her exhibition, they will enter it as unmediated found objects.

Rosa Barba (born 1972, Agrigento, Italy) lives and works in Berlin.

She studied at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, followed by a residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.
