Le Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève est heureux d’annoncer l'inauguration de trois expositions personnelles exclusives le 29 janvier prochain: la première présentation dans une institution d’art des installations vidéo du cinéaste expérimental américain Ernie Gehr, l’une des plus importantes expositions réalisées par l’artiste suisse Raphael Hefti ainsi que la première exposition dans le cadre d'une institution de l'artiste italien Alfredo Aceto.
The Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève is happy to announce three exclusive solo exhibitions opening on January 29: the first ever exhibition of American experimental director Ernie Gehr’s video installations in an art institution, one of the most significant exhibitions ever held by Swiss artist Raphael Hefti and the first solo show in an institution by Italian artist Alfredo Aceto.

Décrit par le New York Times comme « l’un des réalisateurs d’avant-garde les plus percutants et influents d’aujourd’hui », Ernie Gehr exposera huit installations vidéo à canaux multiples sur le troisième étage du Centre. Les films présentés pour Bon Voyage seront montrés pour la première fois en Europe et cinq d’entre eux sont en exclusivité mondiale à Genève.
Un catalogue sera également publié par Mousse Publishing à l'occasion de cette exposition. Il offrira une chronologie complète des travaux et de la vie du cinéaste, des contributions d’Andrea Bellini, Ken Eisenstein et John Hanhardt, ainsi que « Bon Voyage », un essai visuel réalisé spécialement pour cet ouvrage par l’artiste.
Né en 1941 à Milwaukee (USA), Ernie Gehr est un cinéaste souvent associé au mouvement structuraliste des années 70. Parmi ses travaux les plus importants, on peut mentionner Serene Velocity (1970) et Side/Walk /Shuttle (1991).
Described by the New York Times as “one of the most penetrating and influential avant-garde filmmakers working today,” Ernie Gehr will present eight video installations surveying his most recent works on the third floor of the Centre. None of the pieces featured in Bon Voyage have previously been shown in Europe and five of them are shown as world premières in Geneva.
The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive catalogue published by Mousse Publishing. It will include a complete chronology of the cineast’s work and life as well as newly commissioned contributions by Andrea Bellini, Ken Eisenstein, John Hanhardt, and “Bon voyage,” a visual essay by the artist.

Raphael Hefti - OR OR OR?
Dans son travail, Raphael Hefti – au bénéfice d’une formation d’ingénieur – s’intéresse aux propriétés des matériaux et aux processus liés à l’industrie. Avec une approche interventionniste, l’artiste réalise des expériences questionnant ples mécanismes de la production industrielle, pour finalement détourner et révéler la beauté de matériaux du quotidien.
Au deuxième étage du Centre, l'artiste suisse Raphael Hefti présentera OR OR OR?, son premier projet in situ. Cette installation est composée d’environ trois cent barres d’un mètre faites d’acier, aluminium, titane et cuivre. Certaines de ces barres ont été chauffées éléctriquement à très haute température, ce qui modifia la coloration des métaux, leur donnant une apparence nouvelle. Lors du vernissage de ces expositions, Hefti créera son installation face au public, transformant ainsi le lieu d’exposition en laboratoire de production et d’expérimentation.
Raphael Hefti est né en 1978 à Bienne (CH), il vit et travaille entre Zurich et Londres. Il est diplômé de l’Ecole Cantonale d‘art de Lausanne (ECAL) ainsi que de la Slade School of Fine Art, Londres.
In his work, Raphael Hefti – who was trained as an engineer – investigates the properties of material and processes associated with industry. With an interventionist approach, the artist conducts experiments that challenge the mechanisms of industrial production and eventually divert or reveal the beauty of everyday material.
On the second floor of the Centre, Swiss artist Raphael Hefti will present OR OR OR?, his first ever site specific project. The installation made for this exhibition consists of over three hundred one-meter-long poles of steel, aluminium, titanium and copper. Some of the poles have been heated electrically to various extremely high temperatures, what transformed the coloration of the metals, lending them an alien appearance. During the opening of the show, he will create an installation in front of the public, turning the space into a laboratory for production and experimentation.
Raphael Hefti was born in 1978 in Biel (CH) and lives and works between Zurich and London. He attended the Ecole Cantonale d‘art de Lausanne (ECAL) and the Slade School of Fine Art, London.

PROJECT SPACE: Alfredo Aceto - Refaire le Portrait, Acte #1
Pour son exposition et sa résidence au Centre, Alfredo Aceto réadaptera spécialement sa série des "horloges". Dans ce projet, il réactive une anecdote chère à Walter Benjamin selon laquelle, durant la Révolution française, les révolutionnaires tiraient sur les horloges de Paris afin de faire éclater le continuum de l'Histoire.
Alfredo Aceto est né en 1991 à Turin. Il a obtenu un Bachelor à l’Ecole Cantonale d‘art de Lausanne en 2013. Alfredo Aceto sera en résidence au Centre jusqu'en mai 2015. Maya Rochat (1984, CH) et Julie Sas (1991, FR) seront également artistes en résidence au Centre en 2015.
At the Project Space on the fourth floor of the Institution, artist in residence Alfredo Aceto will show some of the art works he will realize during the residency. For his exhibition and his residence at the Centre, Alfredo Aceto will specially readapt his “clocks” series. In the this series, the artist reactivated an anecdote of Walter Benjamin, holding that during the French Revolution, revolutionaries would shoot at clocks in Paris in order to break the continuum of History.
Alfredo Aceto was born in 1991 in Turin. He graduated in 2013 from the Ecole Cantonale d‘art de Lausanne (ECAL), and will be the first of the three 2015 artists-in-residence at the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève. He will be followed by Maya Rochat (1984, CH) and Julie Sas (1991, FR) later in the year.
