Jana Müller – On Rough Diamonds

On Rough Diamonds è un progetto che coinvolge l’intero spazio espositivo attraverso una serie di lavori che vanno a comporre un unica grande installazione giocata sui temi cari all’artista tedesca, quelli della ricerca d’archivio, dell’attività investigativa, in una pratica dal sapore criminologico e forense.

È con piacere che la Paolo Maria Deanesi Gallery presenta la prima personale in un spazio italiano di Jana Müller. On Rough Diamonds è un progetto che coinvolge l’intero spazio espositivo attraverso una serie di lavori che vanno a comporre un unica grande installazione giocata sui temi cari all’artista tedesca, quelli della ricerca d’archivio, dell’attività investigativa, in una pratica dal sapore criminologico e forense.
La mostra porta il visitatore dentro un’ipotetica scena del crimine attraverso oggetti e immagini che appaiono come misteriose evidenze indiziali, tracce che richiedono all’osservatore di essere liberamente messe in relazione nella ricostruzione di una verità, reale o presunta, che si cela dietro ad esse.
Jana Müller sembra essere attratta dal lato più oscuro dell’uomo e della società, come anche da tutte le manifestazioni dell’inconscio e dello sconcertante, specialmente quando si rivelano inaspettatamente sotto una facciata di normalità. Catastrofi sociali, minacce urbane e paure collettive nella loro relazione con i media alimentano il suo lavoro che appare come un’inchiesta su misteriosi eventi che oscillano tra realtà e finzione.
Con l’occasione vengono presentati nuovi lavori fotografici che ripropongono opere precedenti dell’artista in grado così di realizzare un cortocircuito, un gioco di specchi in cui la stessa pratica di Jana Müller diventa indizio di una nuova narrazione fittizia che si rivela solo fino a un certo punto, mai totalmente.
È la ricerca della verità il vero tema del lavoro dell’artista, un diamante grezzo difficile da raggiungere che costringe l’uomo, come l’artista, a un’attività di scavo e interrogazione continua.

Jana Müller è nata nel 1977 ad Halle/Saale. Dal 1999 fino al 2006 ha studiato fotografia all’Accademia di Arti Visive di Lipsia, ottenendo un diploma in arti visive. Vive e lavora a Berlino. Dal 2007 ha partecipato a numerosi progetti di sostegno per artisti tra cui quello del DAAD, dell’Institut für Auslandsbeziehugen (ifa), del Berlin Senat e, recentemente , dal Landesstiftung Niedersachsen per il programma Braunschweig PROJECTS all’Accademia di Arti Visive di Braunschweig. I suoi lavori sono stati esposti in molte occasioni.

Paolo Maria Deanesi Gallery is proud to present the first Italian solo show of Jana Müller. On Rough Diamonds is a project that involves the entire space of the gallery through a series of single works. Combined together, they create a whole installation regarding the common themes of the German artist: those of archival research, of investigative activity and an artistic practice that has many things in common to the fields of criminology and forensics.
The exhibition leads the visitor inside a hypothetical crime scene where objects and images seem to be mysterious traces of circumstantial evidence. They demand the observer to go in a search for the truth, real or presumed, that hides behind them.
Jana Müller seems to be attracted to the darkest sides of man and society as well as to all the manifestations of the unconscious and the uncanny, especially when they lurk behind the facade of normality. Social catastrophes, urban threats and collective fears in their relation with the media give strength to her work that looks like an inquiry into mysterious events that range between reality and fiction.
On this occasion, new photographic works will be presented that re-use some of the artist’s precedent installations in order to create another short circuit, a mirror-game. Müller’s practice becomes itself evidence of a new fictitious narration that unveils itself only to a certain degree, never totally.
It is the research of the truth that is the real theme of the artist's work, like a rare rough diamond that pushes the human being, as well as the artist, to constant digging and interrogation.

Jana Müller was born in 1977 in Halle/Saale. Form 1999 until 2006 she studied photography at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts, graduating with a diploma in visual art. She lives and works in Berlin. Since 2007 she has received numerous grants, including from the DAAD, the Institut für Auslandsbeziehugen (ifa), the Berlin Senat, and most recently from the Landesstiftung Niedersachsen for the program Braunschweig PROJECTS at the Braunschweig Academy of Visual Arts. Her works have been shown in various context.
