Rodrigo Hernández – Stelo

Stelo nasce da un’idea dei due artisti che, dopo essersi conosciuti ai tempi dell’Accademia d’Arte a Città del Messico, nutrivano da tempo il desiderio di realizzare un progetto insieme.

La galleria P420 è felice di presentare Stelo, la doppia personale di Rodrigo Hernández (Città del Messico, 1983) e Rita Ponce de León (Lima, 1982).

Stelo nasce da un'idea dei due artisti che, dopo essersi conosciuti ai tempi dell'Accademia d’Arte a Città del Messico, nutrivano da tempo il desiderio di realizzare un progetto insieme. La mostra si sviluppa attraverso due percorsi paralleli, ognuno dei quali rappresenta il rapporto individuale di ciascun artista nei confronti del proprio mentore, figura di riferimento e di ispirazione che ha influenzato il loro percorso di crescita personale e artistica. Stelo è germinazione, sviluppo, esile fusto ma solido punto di partenza di una crescita da cui nascono diramazioni, percorsi, incontri.

Di particolare influenza per Rita Ponce de León è stato il danzatore giapponese Kazuo Ohno, guru ispiratore della danza butoh. L’artista peruviana ha potuto conoscerne direttamente la pratica grazie al figlio Yoshito. Rodrigo Hernández, invece, è stato particolarmente ispirato dall'incontro con la sua tutor negli anni di studio a Karlsruhe, l’artista svizzera Silvia Bächli, con cui ha mantenuto, negli anni, un rapporto di amicizia e continuo scambio e confronto, intensificato a seguito del suo soggiorno a Basilea, dove la Bächli risiede.

Le opere in mostra non vogliono essere semplicemente un omaggio ai loro “maestri”, ma evocare alcune tappe di questo viaggio tra arte e vita.
Per l’installazione, realizzata site-specific per gli spazi della galleria, i due artisti utilizzano materiali semplici come il tessuto e la terracotta, già incontrati nell’opera di Rita Ponce de León, mentre totalmente inediti nel lavoro di Hernández. Le opere sono state interamente realizzate durante il soggiorno degli artisti a Bologna nelle settimane precedenti l’inaugurazione della mostra.

Rodrigo Hernández (Città del Messico, Messico, 1983) vive e lavora tra Lisbona e Città del Messico. Ha studiato alla Akademie der bildenden Künste di Karlsruhe con Silvia Bächli nel 2010-2012, e alla Jan Van Eyck Academie di Maastricht nel 2013-2014. Negli ultimi anni è stato premiato con una residenza al Laurenz-Haus Stiftung di Basilea nel 2015 e al Cité International des Arts di Paris nel 2016. Rita Ponce de León (Lima, Perù, 1982) ha studiato Arti Visive nella sua città natale presso la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (1999-2003) e successivamente a Città del Messico (“La Esmeralda”, 2003-2008). Il suo lavoro è incentrato soprattutto sul disegno e l’installazione e ha esposto le sue opere in spazi quali La Biennale di San Paolo (Brasile), 2016; la Fundació Joan Miró (Barcellona), 2014; la Kunsthalle di Basilea (Svizzera), 2014; la 80M2 Livia Benavides Gallery (Peru), 2015; la Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros (Messico), 2013; la dodicesima Triennale di Piccola Scultura di Fellbach (Germania), 2013; il Museo de Arte Moderno (Messico), 2012; il New Museum, New York (USA), 2012; e il Centro Cultural Border (Messico), 2008. Nel 2013 i suoi lavori sono stati pubblicati nel libro Vitamin D2 (Phaidon Press Limited, Londra).
Vive e lavora a Città del Messico. Nel 2016 ha svolto una residenza presso il Kazuo Ohno Dance Studio a Yokohama.

Galleria P420 is pleased to present Stelo, the double solo show by Rodrigo Hernández (Mexico City, 1983) and Rita Ponce de León (Lima, 1982).

Stelo comes from an idea of the two artists, who after having met during their time at the Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City had long felt the desire to do a project together. The exhibition develops along two parallel paths, representing the individual relationship of each artist with a mentor, a figure of reference and inspiration that influenced their personal and artistic growth. Stelo is germination, development, a slim but solid stem, the starting point for growth, for branching out into new paths and encounters.

Rita Ponce de León is influenced by the figure of the Japanese Butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno, whose practice she experienced directly with Yoshito Ohno, son of Kazuo. Rodrigo Hernández, on the other hand, has been inspired by the encounter of his tutor during his years of study in Karlsruhe, the Swiss artist Silvia Bächli, with whom he has developed a relationship of friendship and ongoing exchange over the years, strengthened after the time he lived in Basel, where Bächli also resides.

The works in the show are not simply tributes to these “mentors,” but also reflect certain phases of this journey through art and life. In the site-specific installation made for the spaces of the gallery, the two artists use simple materials like fabric and terracotta, already seen in the work of Rita Ponce de León, but without precedents in the work of Hernández. The works have been entirely produced during the time spent by the artists in Bologna, in the weeks prior to the opening of the show.

Rodrigo Hernández (Mexico City, Mexico, 1983) lives and works between Lisbon and Mexico City. In 2013, her work was published in the book Vitamin D2 (Phaidon Press Limited, London).
She lives and works in Mexico City. In 2016 she made a residency in Kazuo Ohno Dance Studio in Yokohama.
