Luke Willis Thompson – Hysterical strength
Mostra personale
Comunicato stampa
GAMeC will also present the first exhibition in an Italian museum by Luke Willis Thompson (Auckland, 1988), curated by Edoardo Bonaspetti as “Guest Curator” of the first edition of a new exhibition programme promoted as part of the Premio Lorenzo Bonaldi per l’Arte – EnterPrize.
Through film, performance, sculpture and installation, Thompson’s practice investigates witnessing as a means of social and political emancipation.
For his solo show at GAMeC, the artist will present the video _Human (2018) and a corpus of works linked to the human and professional experience of Donald Rodney, a leading member of the BLK Art Group, who died at the age of just 36 due to sickle-cell anemia, whose works speak of racism, inequality, memory and media power, capturing the consequences of policies of violence and exclusion.
At a time in which the intolerance of weakness, gender, race and class discrimination seem to spread in a worrying fashion, Thompson’s work and Rodney’s legacy underline the interdependence of the human condition and the dramatic effects that the mechanisms of oppression may exert.
