The Gallery of Art, Temple University Rome is pleased to present the exhibition When Green Turns Red, a sound installation, icons on wood, and a continuous ink drawing by Roman artist Roberta Sanges.

A self-declared “artisan,” Sanges spends a great deal of time in her studio, keeping her doors open to the public, eager to have the attention of the local community. This direct communication with the people allows her to carry on a type of cultural workshop, collaborating with children in the realization of street-art installations, informal workshops in mosaic, painting and furniture restyling.
And this is how I met Roberta, during a class excursion to the Quadraro neighborhood, viewing Street Art and site-specific installations, and visiting artist studios. And we found Roberta. As we curiously crossed the threshold, we knew immediately that we would invite her to present her work in the Gallery.

I might define Roberta as an honest artist, a tireless creator of varied and diverse handcrafted works, conceptual and beautiful. For her, “art is a vocation, a defect, a gift,” and has represented for her the ability to exist in this world. Independent of the mainstream art world – though she has exhibited over the years in various venues – she maintains a flexible approach to materials, and invents techniques and processes.

The current exhibition presents a wide selection of her work, from the endless drawing, created by pouring black ink, and then bleach, onto paper to pull out the spontaneous images, to the icons, where pure pigments, and fire, allow the natural images to emerge from the raw wood.
Over the three weeks of the exhibition, the artist will receive the visitors at her tea table, stage workshops and impromptu performances, and recreate the open, improvisational studio experience in the space of the Gallery of Art.

Roberta Sanges graduated from the Liceo Artistico "Sant'Orsola di Roma," and in 1985 from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, with a degree in painting.

La Gallery of Art, Temple University Rome, è lieta di presentare la mostra When Green Turns Red, installazioni sonore, icone su legno, lungometraggio di inchiostro dell’artista romana Roberta Sanges.

Definirei Roberta un’artista autentica, una creatrice di diversi e variati lavori “artigianali,” concettuali e accattivanti. Per l’artista, “la pittura, la scultura e la decorazione sono un modo di esistere, una vocazione, una malformazione, un dono. L'arte ha rappresentato per me fin da bambina la mia possibilità di stare al mondo.” Indipendente dal mondo ufficiale dell’arte – nonostante abbia esposto in varie gallerie e iniziative artistiche – nel corso della sua vita artistica ha continuamente cercato e trovato occasioni di operare, mantenendo una grande flessibilità e inventando tecniche in funzione delle diverse committenze. In quanto artista “artigiana”, Roberta Sanges investe gran parte del suo tempo nello studio tenendo le porte aperte al pubblico. Questa felice condizione di comunicazione diretta con la gente le permette di svolgere una viva attività culturale. Collabora con i bambini del quartiere nella realizzazione di installazioni street-art, tiene corsi di mosaico informale, pittura, restyling di mobili.

Ed è cosi che abbiamo incontrato Roberta, durante una gita con la mia classe di Arte Contemporanea, al Quadraro, per vedere la Street Art, e per visitare gli studi d’artista. Con curiosità siamo entrati nello studio, e subito abbiamo sentito l’esigenza di ospitare una sua mostra nella Gallery.

La mostra attuale presenta una selezione del suo lavoro, dal lungometraggio di inchiostro, creato con inchiostro nero e varecchina, che permette la spontanea apparizione di immagini sulla carta, alle icone su legno, dove i pigmenti puri, e il fuoco, permettono alle figure di emergere dalla trama del legno. Durante le tre settimane della mostra, l’artista sarà presente con un tavolo da tè, presentando workshops e performance, ricreando così, nello spazio della Gallery, l’esperienza aperta e spontanea dello studio.

Diplomata al Liceo Artistico "Sant'Orsola di Roma" con il massimo dei voti.
