Mimosa Echard – Un bout de toi Salomon

From 20 September to 11 November 2020, Martina Simeti presents Un bout de toi, Salomon, the first solo show to be held in Italy by the French artist Mimosa Echard (France, 1986).

Mimosa Echard’s artistic practice explores both biological and artificial processes, diving into the contradictions of our contemporary aspirations. Endless lists of materials accompany her works. The artist plays with the coupling of dichotomies – form and the formless, the artefact and the organic, fluids and solids – reconciling and giving voice to a fractured universe.

In this exhibition project designed especially for the gallery, the artist presents a new series of human-sized sculpture-containers which, given their transparency, display tubular shapes within them, intertwined to form large spirals. They stand majestically, as if they were “gateways evoking a sense of transcendence, in a very physical scale, being that of the human body.” This is how they are described by Mimosa Echard herself in a conversation with the artist Gaia Vincensini as part of the dialogues featured in the project The Form of a Conversation* promoted by Martina Simeti.

As always in Mimosa Echard’s work, the body plays a key role. There’s an inside and an outside and a limit to be crossed, unfolding amid membranes wrapped around themselves like intestines, filled with a variety of solids and liquids: medicinal plants, small objects both precious and common, in osmosis between one another, “forced to cohabitate,” trapped in a visceral and dizzying composition. “I tell myself a lot of stories with what I use,” says the artist, referring to the range of plants and objects that make up her works, creating a sort of chaos to be reordered.

Completing the installation, a blood-red lampshade hangs from the ceiling, reminiscent of the curtain (Blood) by Felix Gonzalez-Torres and the universe familiar to the artist.

In Echard’s work, there is an “aesthetic, emotional or amorous excitement” which the artist refers to the ’70s psychedelic climate of the village in the Cévennes where she grew up in a small self-run community which still serves as the key source of inspiration and materials for her research.

* The Form of a Conversation is a format which emerged during the lockdown, rooted in the sense of absence with a view to fostering contacts, exchanges and connections. Pairings of artists who collaborate or who have collaborated with the gallery offer a reflection on narrative forms and the objectivisation of identity. Each of their dialogues gave rise to a work issued in a limited edition which materialises each conversion, turning it into a visual object.

Mimosa Echard (1986) lives and works in Paris. Among her most recent shows, in 2019 she displayed her work together with Michel Blazy at the Dortmunder Kunstverein in Germany. Also in 2019 she was artist in residence at Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto. Nominated for the Meurice Prize in 2015, she has also been a resident artist at Lafayette Anticipations – Galeries Lafayette Corporate Foundation in 2014.

Her works are to be found in various public and private collections, such as that of the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Louis Vuitton Foundation, the Galeries Lafayette Corporate Foundation in Paris, the Museo Ettore Fico in Turin, and the Sadami Art Foundation in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In October 2021, she will hold a solo show at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

Martina Simeti presenta, dal 20 settembre all’11 novembre 2020, Un bout de toi, Salomon, prima personale dell’artista francese Mimosa Echard (Francia 1986) in Italia.

La pratica artistica di Mimosa Echard esplora i processi biologici e artificiali e offre un’immersione nelle contraddizioni delle nostre aspirazioni contemporanee. Liste infinite di materiali compongono le sue opere. L’artista gioca nell’accostare dicotomie: la forma e l’informe, il manufatto e l’organico, il fluido e il rappreso, dando voce e riconciliando un universo fratturato.

In questo progetto espositivo pensato per la galleria, l’artista presenta una serie di nuove grandi sculture-contenitore ad altezza d’uomo che, con la loro trasparenza, lasciano intravedere all’interno delle forme tubolari arrotolate in grandi spirali. Maestose, quasi fossero delle «porte, che evocano una trascendenza, hanno una scala di misura molto fisica che è quella del corpo». Così le descrive la stessa Mimosa Echard in una conversazione con l’artista Gaia Vincensini realizzata nell’ambito dei dialoghi del progetto The Form of a Conversation* promosso da Martina Simeti.

Come sempre nelle opere di Mimosa Echard il corpo è chiamato in causa. C’è un dentro e un fuori e un limite da attraversare, spingendosi tra membrane avvolte su loro stesse come intestini, riempite di una varietà di solidi e liquidi: piante mediche, piccoli oggetti preziosi e comuni in osmosi tra di loro, «costretti a esistere insieme», intrappolati in una composizione viscerale e vertiginosa. «Mi racconto molte storie con quello che utilizzo» dice l’artista, riferendosi alla varietà di piante e oggetti di cui compone i suoi lavori, creando una sorta di caos da organizzare.

A completare l’installazione, pende dall’alto una lampada rosso sangue che richiama al contempo la tenda (Blood) di Felix Gonzales-Torres e l’universo familiare dell’artista.

Nel lavoro di Echard c’è una «eccitazione estetica, emotiva o amorosa» che l’artista riconduce proprio al clima psichedelico anni ‘70 del villaggio delle Cévennes dove è cresciuta in una piccola comunità autogestita e che serve ancora oggi da avamposto nel fornire ispirazioni e materiali per la sua ricerca.

* The Form of a Conversation è un format nato durante il lock down che trova le sue origini nell’assenza, per provocare contatti, scambi, connessioni. Binomi di artisti che collaborano o hanno collaborato con la galleria offrono una riflessione sulle forme narrative e l’oggettivazione dell’identità. Da ciascuno dei loro dialoghi scaturisce un’opera in edizione limitata, che materializza ogni conversazione trasformandola in oggetto visivo.

Mimosa Echard (1986) vive e lavora a Parigi. Tra le mostre più recenti, nel 2019 ha esposto il suo lavoro insieme a Michel Blazy alla Dortmunder Kunstverein in Germania. Sempre nel 2019 è stata artista in residenza presso la Villa Kujoyama a Kyoto. Nominata per il Meurice Prize nel 2015, è stata in residenza da Lafayette Anticipations - Fondation d’entreprise Galeries Lafayette nel 2014.
