Ocean Vuong, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous

In 1971 Pier Paolo Pasolini filmed a confession and death scene in a 15th Century wooden room (Stube) - currently still conserved at the Bolzano’s Civic Museum - as part of his screen adaptation of Bocaccio’s The Decameron: a sinner lies to his friar-confessor on his deathbed and by means of lying reaches beatification and becomes an object of worship.

The exhibition takes its cue from this episode, shot a few steps away from ar/ge kunst, to open up some questions concerning the role of museums and cultural institutions as places of preservation and transmission of histories, as sites of fictions and construction of narratives, as thresholds between life and the afterlife - reliquaries where once-alive objects, bodies and rituals exist today as relics and receptacles vessels of future desires. Pier Paolo Pasolini drehte 1971 anlässlich seiner Verfilmung von Boccaccios Dekameron auch eine Beicht- und Sterbeszene in einer hölzernen Stube des 15. Jahrhunderts, die heute noch im Stadtmuseum Bozen verwahrt wird: Auf dem Sterbebett liegend, belügt ein Sünder seinen Beichtbruder und wird dank der Lüge daraufhin seliggesprochen und erfährt Verehrung.

Die nur wenige Schritte von der ar/ge kunst entfernt gedrehte Episode dient als Ausgangspunkt für die Ausstellung, um Fragen nach der Rolle von Museen und kulturellen Einrichtungen als Orten der Bewahrung und Weitergabe von Geschichte, als Räumen der Fiktion und Konstruktion von Erzählungen sowie als Schwellen zwischen Leben und Nicht-Leben zu stellen – Reliquienkammern vergleichbar, in denen einstmals lebendige Objekte, Körper und Rituale inzwischen eine Existenz als kostbare Erinnerungsstücke und als Behälter für künftige Wünsche führen. Come parte del suo adattamento cinematografico de Il Decamerone di Boccaccio, nel 1971 Pier Paolo Pasolini filmò una scena di confessione e morte all’interno di una stanza in legno (Stube) del XV Secolo, ancora conservata al Museo Civico di Bolzano: un peccatore mente al frate confessore sul letto di morte e grazie alla menzogna ottiene la beatificazione diventando oggetto di venerazione.

La mostra prende le mosse da questo episodio, girato a pochi passi da ar/ge kunst, per aprire ad alcune domande sul ruolo dei musei e delle istituzioni culturali come luoghi di conservazione e trasmissione della storia, come spazi di finzione e costruzione di narrazioni, come soglie tra la vita e non vita - reliquiari dove oggetti, corpi e rituali un tempo vivi, esistono oggi come cimeli e ricettacoli di desideri futuri.
