Title: “Post hoc”
Curators: Dr Zara Stanhope, Chris Sharp
Commissioner: Dame Jenny Gibbs
Artist: Dane Mitchell
“Post hoc” by the Auckland-based artist Dane Mitchell is a multi-site installation that will broadcast lists of millions of extinct, defunct and forgotten phenomena across the city of Venice. Unsuspecting visitors and residents will be able to hear the electronic chants when they discover Mitchell’s 6-metre tall stealth towers – cell towers disguised as trees – installed in various historical sites. The hub of the broadcast will be the Palazzina Canonica – the former HQ of the Institute of Marine Sciences. Ranging from extinct animal species to ghost ships, destroyed artworks, former capital cities, and known black holes, the colossal lists will also be printed on rolls of paper inside the historic library of the Palazzina, prompting questions about our relation to the past and how we can shape our futures.
