957 I.A.M. #100 Town-Ho

A Locarno, apre la nuova esposizione ospitando il progetto del curatore e artista lucernese Stephan Wittmer, che torna sul Verbano dopo la partecipazione al progetto collettivo «Kunsthalle?» e più volte presso OnArte.

Venerdì 26 giugno alle 18 la rada, a Locarno, apre la nuova esposizione ospitando il progetto del curatore e artista lucernese Stephan Wittmer, che torna sul Verbano dopo la partecipazione al progetto collettivo «Kunsthalle?» e più volte presso OnArte.

Wittmer è il creatore della rivista _957 I.A.M. - cioè Independent Art Magazine – è l'esposizione nasce dall'intervento di ben cento artisti su altrettante copie della centesima edizione della rivista, che esce senza una periodicità fissa.

Il curatore ha risposto così alle domande poste da Tiziana Bonetti, di artlog.net:

Town-Ho: con questo titolo la _957 Independent Art Magazine festeggia il suo centesimo numero. L'espressione in lingua straniera con il trattino tra i due monosillabi non solo denota un vecchio grido nordamericano di caccia alle balene alla vista di questa enorme creatura marina. Anche la nave baleniera di Nantucket presente nella storia del romanzo di Herman Melville Moby Dick prende il suo nome. A bordo di questa nave fittizia ci sono due avversari che si spaccano la testa a vicenda: da un lato il marinaio Steelkit di Buffalo che si rifiuta di obbedire agli ordini e dall'altro il caparbio barcaiolo Radney. La storia della rissa con un esito sanguinoso riguarda la resistenza vincente contro chi è al potere.

Allo stesso modo, il capodoglio bianco Moby Dick racconta il tema politicamente esplosivo della rivolta: la parola inglese mob contenuta nel suo nome è un'allusione all'inquietante mobilità delle masse. Le forze in movimento sono anche il punto di partenza visivo per il prossimo numero di _957 Independent Art Magazine. In occasione dell'anniversario della pubblicazione del medium di nicchia curato dall'artista Stephan Wittmer, le masse turbolente non sono però formate da collettivi rivoluzionari, ma piuttosto da immagini trovate in rete ed elaborate digitalmente, che mostrano l'impetuosa fluttuazione dell'acqua. Sulla base di questo tema, che funge da modello, gli artisti partecipanti hanno creato nuove immagini di carattere indipendente attraverso interventi analogici nel materiale.

Con l'edizione Town-Ho, Wittmer si preoccupa meno del mare inquieto come metafora della resistenza e della ribellione, quanto delle possibilità formali ed estetiche di associazione e di design che il motivo offre per un ulteriore trattamento artistico. Così come l'ambientazione del mare aperto nel romanzo di Melville corre come un filo rosso attraverso le storie d'avventura, collega anche le pagine artisticamente disegnate del centesimo numero della rivista d'arte.

Alla rada il numero dell'anniversario viene presentato in un nuovo allestimento espositivo.

L'esposizione, che include opere di artisti sia internazionali che legati al Locarnese, sarà aperta tutti i giorni dalle 14 alle 19 e si concluderà già la sera di sabato 4 luglio.

Am Freitag, den 26. Juni um 18 Uhr eröffnet la rada in Locarno die neue Ausstellung mit dem Projekt des Luzerner Kurators und Künstlers Stephan Wittmer, der nach seiner Teilnahme am kollektiven Projekt "Kunsthalle?" und mehreren OnArte-Aufenthalten ins Verbano-Gebiet zurückkehrt.

Wittmer ist der Schöpfer des Magazins _957 I.A.M. - d.h. Independent Art Magazine - die Ausstellung ist das Ergebnis der Intervention von bis zu hundert Künstlern an ebenso vielen Exemplaren der hundertsten Ausgabe des Magazins, die ohne feste Periodizität herauskommt.

Die Kuratorin beantwortete damit die Fragen von Tiziana Bonetti von artlog.net:

Town-Ho: Mit dieser Titelüberschrift feiert das _957 Independent Art Magazine seine hundertste Ausgabe. Der fremdsprachig klingende Ausdruck mit dem Bindestrich zwischen den beiden Einsilblern bezeichnet nicht nur einen alten nordamerikanischen Walfangschrei beim Anblick dieses riesigen Meeresbewohners. Auch das Nantucket-Walfangschiff in Herman Melvilles Binnengeschichte des Romans Moby Dick lautet auf diesen Namen. An Bord dieses fiktiven Schiffs befinden sich zwei Kontrahenten, die sich gegenseitig die Köpfe einschlagen: Zum einen der Befehle verweigernde Matrose Steelkit aus Buffalo und zum anderen der sture Bootsmann Radney. Die Raufereigeschichte mit blutigem Ausgang handelt vom erfolgreichen Widerstand gegen Machthaber.

Ähnlich kündet auch der weisse Pottwal Moby Dick vom politisch brisanten Thema der Revolte: Das in seinem Namen enthaltene englische Wort mob ist eine Anspielung auf die beunruhigende Mobilität von Massen. In Bewegung geratene Kräfte stellen auch den visuellen Ausgangspunkt der nächsten Ausgabe des _957 Independent Art Magazine dar. Anlässlich der Jubiläumspublikation des vom Künstler Stephan Wittmer herausgegebenen Nischenmediums werden die turbulenten Massen allerdings nicht von revolutionären Kollektiven gebildet, sondern von im Netz gefundenen und digital bearbeiteten Bildern, die ungestüm wogendes Wasser zeigen. Ausgehend von diesem als Vorlage dienenden Sujet haben die teilnehmenden Kunstschaffenden, durch analoge Eingriffe in das Material neue Bilder von eigenständigem Charakter geschaffen.

Mit der Ausgabe Town-Ho geht es Wittmer entsprechend weniger um das unruhige Meer als Metapher für Widerstand und Aufbegehren, als vielmehr um die formal-ästhetischen Assoziations- und Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten, die das Motiv zur weiteren künstlerischen Bearbeitung bereithält. So wie der Schauplatz der offenen See in Melvilles Roman die Abenteuergeschichten wie einen roten Faden durchzieht, verknüpft es auch die künstlerisch gestalteten Seiten der 100. Ausgabe der Kunstzeitschrift.

In la rada präsentiert sich die Jubiläumsausgabe in einem neuen Ausstellungsdisplay.

Die Ausstellung mit Werken von internationalen und Locarno-Künstlern ist täglich von 14.00 bis 19.00 Uhr geöffnet und endet am Samstagabend, dem 4. Juli.

On Friday, 26 June at 6 pm la rada in Locarno will open the new exhibition with the project of the Lucerne curator and artist Stephan Wittmer, who is returning to the Verbano area after his participation in the collective project "Kunsthalle?" and several shows at OnArte.

Wittmer is the creator of the magazine _957 I.A.M. - i.e. Independent Art Magazine - the exhibition is the result of the intervention of up to one hundred artists on as many copies of the hundredth issue of the magazine, which is published without a fixed periodicity.

Town-Ho: With this title headline the _957 Independent Art Magazine celebrates its hundredth issue. The foreign-language-sounding expression with the hyphen between the two monosyllables not only denotes an old North American whaling cry at the sight of this gigantic sea creature. The Nantucket whaling ship in Herman Melville's in the storyline of the novel Moby Dick also bears this name. On board this fictitious ship there are two opponents who bash each other's heads in: on the one hand the sailor Steelkit from Buffalo who refuses to obey orders and on the other hand the stubborn boatman Radney. The scuffle story with a bloody outcome is about successful resistance against those in power.

Similarly, the white sperm whale Moby Dick tells of the politically explosive subject of the revolt: the English word mob contained in its name is an allusion to the unsettling mobility of the masses. Forces in motion are also the visual starting point for the next issue of the _957 Independent Art Magazine. On the occasion of the anniversary publication of the niche medium edited by the artist Stephan Wittmer, however, the turbulent masses are not formed by revolutionary collectives, but rather by images found on the net and digitally processed, showing impetuously billowing water. Based on this subject, which serves as a model, the participating artists have created new images of an independent character through analogue interventions in the material.

In the Town-Ho edition, Wittmer is less concerned with the restless sea as a metaphor for resistance and rebellion than with the formal-aesthetic possibilities of association and design that the motif offers for further artistic treatment. Just as the setting of the open sea in Melville's novel runs like a red thread through the adventure stories, it also links the artistically designed pages of the 100th issue of the art magazine.

The exhibition, with works by international and Locarnese artists, is open daily from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and ends on Saturday evening, 4 July.
