The Link Center for the Arts of the Information Age is proud to announce the launch of its brand new project space, the Link Point. The space will open with the one-night exhibition Refresh, by Adam Cruces, on September 29, 2012.
The Link Point is Link Art Center's multi-functional space: a small white cube that will work as "base" for an institution that is, and will go on to be, nomadic, and that will serve, from time to time, as a project room, a workshop room, a meeting point and a window on Link Art Center's traveling projects.
The new space - located in Brescia, Via Alessandro Monti 13, takes the place formerly occupied by the Fabio Paris Art Gallery, recently restored to better serve its new mission. According to Fabio Paris, who founded the gallery in 2000 and co-founded the Link Art Center in 2011, "this is a natural development of my shift from running a commercial gallery to co-founding a no profit organization, in the attempt to better do what I always did: support the arts of the information age."
Refresh, by Adam Cruces, is an attempt to re-contextualize his recent digital work in a physical space. Born in Huston, Texas, in 1985, Adam Cruces lives and works in Zürich, Switzerland, where he is currently attending the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. His work makes a consistent use of vernacular material appropriated from the web, and of concepts, images, aesthetics and practices that, introduced by the most common and popular interfaces, ended up populating our imaginary, and our subconscious. For example, Patience (2011) is a short, hypnotic video loop featuring a digital beauty, her empty eyes filled with a standard Mac OS animation, the spinning wait cursor rotating upon the remixed sound that we ear when we launch a Mac OS system. The same spinning cursor returns in Aware (2012), where its design becomes the starting point of an ambiguous sculpture, in between a Minimalist installation and a Surrealist object. How does our life on screen affect the way we think, imagine, dream and make art? How does our increasing familiarity with softwares, interfaces and technological gadgets change our visual and sound scape? Do we dream of electric sheeps? These are some of the questions raised by Adam Cruces' work.
The Link Point doesn't end when you take the exit door. Right out of it, the Link Art Center installed a Dead Drop, as a contribution to the ongoing project launched in October 2010 by German artist Aram Bartholl, and rapidly turned into a worldwide phenomenon, with about one thousand dead drops installed all around the world. A dead drop is a USB flash drive embedded into a wall, that becomes part of an "anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space." The Link Dead Drop will be used by us to share with you Link Editions' e-books, works by featured artists, and site specific exhibitions, but can also be used by you to share whatever you want with us, and with everybody else. So: if you come to visit us on September 29, please come with a USB enabled device.
On October 13, 2012, from 6.30 to 12.00 PM, the Link Point will open again to present the video screening Don't Watch If You Dislike, curated by Valentina Tanni: a focus on the explosion of amateur creativity online and its relationship to contemporary art. The curator will be present.

Il Link Point è lo spazio multifunzionale del Link Art Center: un piccolo cubo bianco che farà da base di una istituzione che è, e vuole restare, nomade, e che servirà, di volta in volta, da project room, sede di workshop e seminari, punto d'incontro e vetrina sulle attività internazionali del Link Art Center.
Il nuovo spazio, situato in Via Alessandro Monti 13 a Brescia, prende il posto già occupato dalla Fabio Paris Art Gallery, recentemente ristrutturato per servire meglio la sua nuova missione. Secondo Fabio Paris, che ha fondato la galleria nel 2000 ed è socio fondatore del Link Art Center dal 2011, "si tratta di uno sviluppo naturale del mio passaggio dalla gestione di una galleria commerciale a quella di una organizzazione no profit, nello sforzo di fare meglio ciò che ho sempre fatto: sostenere l'arte dell'età dell'informazione."
Refresh, di Adam Cruces, è un tentativo di ri-contestualizzare il suo recente lavoro digitale in uno spazio fisico. Nato a Huston, Texas, nel 1985, Adam Cruces vive e lavora a Zurigo, Svizzera, dove frequenta la Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. Il suo lavoro fa un utilizzo consistente di materiale vernacolare e professionale appropriato dalla rete, e di concetti, immagini, estetiche e pratiche che, introdotte dalle interfacce più comuni e popolari, hanno iniziato ad abitare il nostro immaginario, e il nostro subconscio. Ad esempio, Patience (2011) è un breve, ipnotico video loop che mostra una "bellezza digitale", i suoi occhi vuoti abitati da un'animazione standard dei sistemi Mac, il cursore di attesa che ruota in mezzo alla fronte al suono remixato e ripetuto che sentiamo quando avviamo un sistema Mac. Lo stesso cursore rotante ritorna in Aware (2012), dove il suo design diventa il punto di partenza di un'ambigua scultura, a metà tra l'installazione minimalista e l'oggetto surrealista? Come la nostra vita sullo schermo influenza il modo in cui pensiamo, immaginiamo, sogniamo e facciamo arte? Come la nostra crescente familiarità con software, interfacce e gadget tecnologici cambia il nostro paesaggio visivo e sonoro? Sogniamo forse pecore elettriche? Sono solo alcune delle domande sollevate dal lavoro di Adam Cruces.
Il Link Point non finisce sulla porta d'ingresso. Subito fuori di essa, il Link Art Center ha installato una "Dead Drop", come contributo al progetto in corso lanciato nell'ottobre 2010 dall'artista tedesco Aram Bartholl, e rapidamente trasformatosi in un fenomeno globale, con più di mille Dead Drop in tutto il mondo. Una Dead Drop è una chiavetta USB istallata in un muro esterno, che diventa parte di "una rete di file sharing anonima e offline installata nello spazio pubblico." La Dead Drop del Link Point verrà usata da noi per condividere i libri pubblicati da Link Editions, lavori selezionati degli artisti presentati, e per organizzare mostre site-specific; ma potrà essere usata da chiunque per condividere qualsiasi cosa con il Link Art Center, e con chiunque altro. Se venite a trovarci il 29 settembre, venite con qualcosa che possa connettersi a una chiavetta USB.
Il 13 ottobre 2012, dalle 18.30 alle 24.00, il Link Point riaprirà per presentare la rassegna video Don't Watch If You Dislike, a cura di Valentina Tanni, che riflette sull'esplosione di creatività amatoriale in rete e sul suo rapporto con l'arte contemporanea. Sarà presente la curatrice.
