Primo Marella Gallery Lugano is pleased to present Amani Bodo’s solo show: ECHOES OF THE MASTERS. Amani Bodo’s visions through the ages.
Amani Bodo (1988, Kinshasa), is a self-taught artist, who grew up surrounded by artists, including his father Pierre Bodo, Moké, and Chéri Samba, who helped establish the renowned Popular School of Painting. Amani’s surreal works delve into a wide array of themes such as spirituality, sexuality, and the effects of Western culture on Congolese society.
What sets Amani’s canvases apart is his unique technique, which he describes as something that "just happened" to him.
Amani Bodo draws inspiration from a wide range of artistic traditions, blending African tribal art, Renaissance influences, and Dutch Baroque to neoclassical works. His art often reinterprets iconic masterpieces reimagining their historical characters as ethnic Africans. This fusion allows him to honor classical artists while addressing contemporary geopolitical issues through a unique lens of irony and storytelling. His work transforms homage into a vibrant commentary on the present.
