No Truth in Fear si interroga sul rapporto tra arte contemporanea e vita, nella rappresentazione del fenomeno migratorio, uno più drammatici eventi di questo momento storico. L’artista londinese Andrew Rutt, rivisita il provocatorio autoritratto di Bruce Nauman (Self-Portrait as a Fountain) del 1970, a sua volta omaggio alla celebre Fontana di Marcel Duchamp (1917), scardinando la tendenza dell’arte verso l’autoreferenzialità, costringendola al contatto diretto con la verità della vita attuale. L’acqua, da elemento di provocazione, si fa elemento di salvezza, speranza, possibilità; l’artista non rappresenta più sé stesso, ma si pone al servizio di una realtà esterna a lui. Questa brusca e straniante sostituzione del protagonista dell’immagine pone immediati interrogativi riguardanti la capacità dell’arte di interrogare la realtà e farsi carico delle istanze più concrete e drammatiche di questa.

No Truth in Fear è il primo di sei progetti curati da Mike Watson in Una Vetrina, facenti parte del ciclo intitolato Condotto. Ogni progetto, che fa parte di un ciclo più ampio che si terrà durante l’anno presso Una Vetrina, nasce dalla conversazione avvenuta tra il curatore e un scelta di artisti che vivono a Roma.

Andrew Rutt’s No Truth in Fear - displayed for one week in Una Vetrina - appropriates Bruce Nauman’s Self Portrait as a Fountain (1970), an edition of photographs in which the artist references Duchamp’s readymade Fountain of 1917. Nauman physically embodies the fountain, spitting water towards the viewer, inviting debate on the role of the artist. In Rutt’s photo, the 'fountain' is a Nigerian migrant, Ibrahim, who survived the trip to italy on the boat through the Mediterranean. The water, formerly an element of provocation, becomes an element of salvation, hope, opportunity; the artist no longer represents himself, but is at the service of an external reality. This sudden and alienating replacement of the protagonist’s image questions the capacity of art to address social reality concretely.

No Truth in Fear is the first of six projects curated by Mike Watson in Una Vetrina over the next year under the project title Conduit. Each project, taking place as part of Una Vetrina's wider programme will draw on conversations which have taken place between the curator and the chosen artists in Rome.
