Artist Talk: Diego Tonus – Fragments of a Conversation with a Counterfeiter.

Nella sua pratica, Diego Tonus utilizza la riproduzione come strumento di investigazione per questionare sistemi di controllo e strutture di potere presenti nel quotidiano. Sia che l’artista usi il video o la scrittura giornalistica (in cui il montaggio permette di raccontare nuovamente un’esperienza individuale attraverso la sua alterazione), l’uso della voce (che conosce precise tecniche di tono e modulazione per influenzare la reazione inconscia dell’ascoltatore), o la performance e la scultura (in cui uno specifico soggetto e la sua storia vengono interrogati attraverso la loro replica), la ricerca di Tonus analizza l’equilibrio fra le modalità del racconto e il suo contenuto, mostrando in quanta misura esse siano innanzitutto strumenti di potere e di manipolazione: sia sul pubblico che sul proprio oggetto.

In occasione dell’Artist Talk presso Flip Project, Tonus presenterà la sua pratica artistica e il suo ultimo corpo di lavori dal titolo Frammenti di una Conversazione con un Falsario. Questo progetto contribuisce ad una discussione sulla trasformazione e il trasporto del valore, questionando la valorizzazione del tempo e dello spazio nella crisi. Questi nuovi lavori derivano da una conversazione tra Diego Tonus e un falsario, che ha rivelato una serie pensieri paradossali legati ad attuali sistemi di definizione del valore. Ciascun lavoro è la traduzione visiva di questa conversazione, da parte dell’artista. Tonus si è avvicinato ai pensieri del falsario come se fossero stati la sua proprietà intellettuale, investigando quale possa considerarsi il contrario della falsificazione e appropriandosi delle idee del contraffattore.
Per potersi appropriare delle idee del falsario e condividerle con il pubblico, l’artista ha registrato i lavori come segreti commerciali presso l’Ufficio di Proprietà Intellettuali del Benelux. La validità di questi segreti è internazionale e ha la durata di 10 anni.

Durante il talk, Tonus presenterà la mostra attualmente in corso in sedi private e pubbliche delle città olandesi dell’Aia e di Maastricht, e nata in collaborazione con il Museo STROOM Den Haag e la Jan Van Eyck Academie Maastricht. La mostra è articolata in una serie di eventi che avranno luogo nel periodo dei 3 mesi della mostra (1 Marzo – 24 Maggio) in queste due città che rivestono particolare importanza per la presenza di poteri economici, politici e sociali a livello internazionale.

Frammenti di una Conversazione con un Falsario è un progetto dell’artista Diego Tonus, a cura di Huib Haye van der Werf, promosso da Jan Van Eyck Academie e STROOM Den Haag, vincitore della terza edizione del bando Italian Council (2018), concorso ideato dalla Direzione Generale Arte e Architettura contemporanee e Periferie urbane (DGAAP) del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, per promuovere l’arte contemporanea italiana nel mondo.
Un catalogo dedicato, verrà pubblicato da Roma Publications Amsterdam e collezionerà il sapere prodotto durante la mostra e durante gli eventi paralleli organizzati dall’artista, fra cui la performance EURO organizzata in collaborazione con Flip Project presso la Fondazione ilCartastorie – Archivi Storici del Banco di Napoli.

Diego Tonus (b.1984, Pordenone) ha partecipato a mostre collettive fra cui la Biennale di Mosca (2018); Saal Biennal, Tallin (2017); 16.ma Quadriennale di Roma (2016); WIELS, Brussels (2015); De Appel, Amsterdam (2015); CCA Singapore (2014) e Palais de Tokyo, Parigi (2013). Mostre e presentazione personali presso Ellen de Bruijne Projects (2018); ar/ge kunst Kunstverein Bozen (2017); Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (2013) e Padiglione Danese, Giardini Biennale Venezia (2011). I suoi film sono stati presentati internazionalmente incluso presso Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2016); Whitechapel Gallery, Londra (2015) e Kunsthalle Gwangju (2011). Tonus ha partecipato a residenze quali Van Eyck, Maastricht (2017); WIELS, Brussels (2014) e Spinola Banna Foundation, Torino (2011). L’artista è stato nominato per premi quali Italian Council – MiBACT (2018); Performance Act Award, Trento (2015) e Add Fire - Premio Furla, Bologna (2012). Within his artistic practice, Diego Tonus focuses on reproduction as a tool of investigation to question and transform images, objects and collective experiences he selects, in order to put them in a new process of thought and present their underlying structures of codification and normativity. Either working with video or journalistic writing (whereby editing allows the re-telling of an individual experience by altering it), voice (wherein precise pitch and modulation techniques influence listener’s unconscious reaction), performance or sculpture (wherewith a specific subject and its history are questioned through the presentation of their new originals), the research of Diego Tonus analyses the balance between narrative’s modes and the content, showing or revealing how much narrative structure is, above all, an instrument of influencing and manipulation of both the public and the object.

For the Artist Talk at Flip Project, the artist will give an overview of his artistic practice together with focusing on this latest body of works titled Fragments of a Conversation with a Counterfeiter. This project contributes to a discussion about the transformation and transportation of value, questioning the valorisation of time and space in time of crisis. This latest series of new works derives from an assumed conversation between Diego Tonus and a forger revealing controversial thoughts related to contemporary systems that deal with the definition of value. Each artwork is the visual translation by the artist of this supposed conversation. Tonus approaches the thoughts of the counterfeiter as if they were his intellectual property, questioning the ‘counter’ of counterfeiting and appropriating his ideas.
In order to share the appropriated forger’s ideas with the international audience, to activate and perform them, the artist has registered the works as trade secrets at the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property. The validity of the trade secret is international and lasts 10 years.

During his talk, Tonus will encompass the current presentation of the works in collaboration with STROOM Den Haag and Jan van Eyck Academie Maastricht articulated in a series of separate events taking place throughout the 3-month period of the exhibition (March 1st – May 24th) in which the works are exhibited in selected public and private venues within The Hague and Maastricht, each representing different types of power.

The project Fragments of a Conversation with a Counterfeiter by Diego Tonus, curated by Huib Haye van der Werf, and promoted by Jan van Eyck Academie and STROOM Den Haag, is winner of the third edition of Italian Council (2018), a competition ideated by the Directorate General for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Peripheries (DGAAP) – organ of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, to promote Italian contemporary art in the world.
A dedicated catalogue will be published by Roma Publications Amsterdam and will encompass all the knowledge produced during the exhibition and the parallel events organized by the artist, among which the performance EURO organized in collaboration with Flip Project at the Fondazione ilCartastorie - Banco di Napoli Historical Archives.

Flip project is an artist-run space in Napoli. It is an independent curatorial project, a platform for discussions devoted to developing models of collaboration that expand on interests in contemporary culture and artistic practice.

Flip is motivated by continuous changes in location and spontaneous occurrences that extend from the local to address the current milieu. Flip presents across a multiplicity of spatial situations where discussions take shape as exhibitions, publications or digital fragments.
