Choisi – one at a time e Artphilein Foundation sono lieti di presentare, quale ulteriore tappa della loro partecipazione al 12° Culturescapes Festival TOKYO 2014, il libro d'artista La forma del vuoto dell'artista giapponese Kengiro Azuma, edito nei Quaderni di Orfeo, nel 2008.

La forma del vuoto trae spunto dalle riflessioni filosofiche e dalle ricerche artistiche di Kengiro Azuma su “MU” (il vuoto, nel senso di non essere, di non esistere), contrapposto a “YU” (l’essere, l’esistere). Per il buddismo zen la creatività non è frutto di un atto produttivo cosciente, bensì deriva da uno stato di non-mente (mu-shin 無心,) in cui il pensiero, le emozioni, le aspettative, non hanno alcuna presenza conscia.
In un’alternanza paragonabile a una pagina musicale, questo libro contrappone l’ideogramma “MU”, stampato tipograficamente nella sua interpretazione calligrafica, a pagine di testo e a interventi dell’artista, il tutto inserito in un cofanetto-scultura, in cui è ripresa la forma della goccia d’acqua. Dopo le opere “MU” che, a partire dalla fine degli anni '50, hanno caratterizzato la sua creazione artistica, Azuma nelle sue sculture ha recuperato il volume, imprimendo l’effetto della fluidità dell’acqua nella fusione bronzea. Nel libro d’artista La forma del vuoto, questo percorso artistico trova la sua poetica sintesi.

Kengiro Azuma è nato a Yamagata (Giappone) nel 1926. Nel 1953 si laurea in Scultura all'Università di Tokyo. Nel 1956, grazie a una borsa di studio dal Governo Italiano, si trasferisce in Italia, dove vive tuttora. All'Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera è allievo e in seguito assistente di Marino Marini. Nel 1995 ha ricevuto il prestigioso Premio Shijuhosho.

Choisi - one at a time and Artphilein Foundation are pleased to present –as a further section of their participation in the 12° Culturescapes Festival TOKYO 2014– the artist’s book La forma del vuoto (The shape of the emptiness) by Japanese artist Kengiro Azuma, published in the Quaderni di Orfeo, in 2008.

La forma del vuoto draws its sources of inspiration from the philosophical reflections and artistic researches of Kengiro Azuma on ‘MU’ (the emptiness, the non-being, the non-existence), opposed to ‘YU’ (the being, the existence).
In the Zen Buddhism, the creativity is not the result of a conscious act of production, but rather origins from a state of no-mind (mu-shin 無心) , in which thoughts, emotions, expectations aren’t of an aware presence. In a rhythm of alternation –comparable to a score of music– this book alternates the ideogram 'MU', printed typographically in its calligraphic interpretation, with text pages and with interventions by the artist, the whole fitted in a box-sculpture, in which the shape of a drop of water is repeated. After the artworks ‘MU’ which have characterized Azuma's artistic creation since the late 50s, he recovered the volume in his sculptures, impressing the effect of the fluidity of water in the bronze fusion. This artistic journey finds its poetic synthesis in the artist’s book La forma del vuoto.

Kengiro Azuma was born in Yamagata, Japan, in 1926. In 1953 he graduated in Sculpture from Tokyo University. In 1956 he moved to Italy, where he lives still now, thanks to a fellowship from the Italian Government. At Brera Fine Arts Academy he was student and then assistant to Marino Marini. In 1995 he has been awarded with the prestigious Shijuhosho prize.
