‘Beati pacifici: The Disasters of War and the Hope for International Peace’ will be an exhibition of works from the Bailey Collection, curated by W. Bruce C. Bailey at Chiesa di San Samuele, San Marco and running concurrently with the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Bringing together over 200 works by Jacques Callot, Francisco Goya, Otto Dix, and contemporary luminaries from Marlene Dumas to Peter Doig, the exhibition will assemble an anti-heroic history of Western war art. Tracing a particular chain of influence from the 17th century to the present day, ‘Beati pacifici’ will testify to art’s enduring power to apprehend the horrors of conflict, depicting the unspeakable. An original poem by Margaret Atwood, titled The Disasters of War: A Sequel, will complement the exhibition, along with a full-colour catalogue, with an essay by critic Jackson Arn. The exhibition will run until 29 September 2024.
