Billy Childish è un artista eclettico, una figura di culto riconosciuta in ambito musicale e letterario oltre che in quello artistico per la folta produzione indipendente realizzata negli ultimi trentacinque anni.

Si inaugura martedì 10 marzo dalle ore 18,30 presso la galleria Paolo Curti/Annamaria Gambuzzi & Co. la prima mostra personale in Italia di Billy Childish (Chatham, Kent, UK, 1959).
Billy Childish è un artista eclettico, una figura di culto riconosciuta in ambito musicale e letterario oltre che in quello artistico per la folta produzione indipendente realizzata negli ultimi trentacinque anni. Oggi è soprattutto un pittore di talento e di fama internazionale che trascorre le giornate a dipingere nel suo studio presso i cantieri nautici della Royal Naval Dockyard a Chatham, nel Kent, dove è nato.

Nel 1978 Childish si trasferisce a Londra dove frequenta la St. Martin School of Art insieme all’amico e compagno di corso Peter Doig. Il suo atteggiamento anticonformista emerge fin da subito, viene espulso dalla scuola e manifesta precocemente quell’indole ribelle che lo accompagnerà nel corso della sua odissea artistica ed umana. Billy Childish infatti fin dall’inizio della sua carriera, promuove la pittura figurativa in opposizione all’arte concettuale e al movimento della ‘Young British Art’ che negli anni ’80 prende sempre più piede in Inghilterra.

La sua pittura è un viaggio interiore tra gli affetti personali, i luoghi vissuti, la storia e i molti personaggi del passato a cui è legato, tra questi: Giovanni Segantini, a cui dedica alcuni ritratti e un grande paesaggio (cm 183 x 305) presente in mostra. E’ un omaggio alle montagne dell’Engadina, al suo cielo a quella luce così speciale che aveva stregato ai tempi lo stesso Segantini, che per questo vi trascorse gran parte della sua vita. La montagna e il blu del cielo, sono protagonisti anche nella grande opera: “Abseiler” in cui emerge, sospesa nel vuoto, la figura di Tony Kurtz, un famoso alpinista del ‘900, che perse la vita per sfinimento, mentre era appeso a una corda, in seguito ad una valanga sull’ Eiger, in Svizzera.

Il riferimento agli avvenimenti storici è presente anche nell’opera esposta in mostra: "1895" dove Billy Childish reinterpreta ancora una volta il soggetto degli estuari del Tamigi e del Medway congelati durante gli inverni del 1895 e del 1947. L’ispirazione deriva da vecchie fotografie trovate dall’artista a bordo di un rompighiaccio durante la grande gelata del 1980. L’idea del mondo bloccato dalla neve è per l’artista seduttiva fin da quando era bambino. L’artista è attratto dal potere della forza del gelo che riesce ad intrappolare le navi, a fermare il tempo, l’immagine è cristallizzata nella memoria di Childish, una visione a cui oggi riesce a dare nuova vita attraverso la sua pennellata densa e carica di espressionismo.

Dal 2010 per Billy Childish emergono riconoscimenti a livello internazionale, dove istituzioni come il White Columns di New York e l’Institute of Contemporary Art di Londra gli hanno dedicato due importanti mostre personali.

The first solo show in Italy by Billy Childish (Chatham, Kent, UK, 1959) opens on Tuesday March 10th at 18.30 at Galleria Paolo Curti/Annamaria Gambuzzi & Co.

Billy Childish is an eclectic artist, a cult figure in the world of music and literature as well as on the art scene thanks to prolific independent output over the course of the last thirty-five years. Today he is above all a talented and internationally acclaimed painter who spends his days working in a studio in the Royal Naval Dockyard of Chatham, Kent, where he was born.

In 1978 Childish moved to London to study at the St. Martin School of Art together with his friend and classmate Peter Doig. His non-conformist attitude immediately surfaced, getting him expelled from school and foreshadowing the rebellious attitude that was to be a constant throughout his artistic and human odyssey. Billy Childish, from the start of his career, has championed figurative painting as opposed to Conceptual Art and the ‘Young British Art’ that was gaining wider recognition in England in the 1980s.

His painting is an inner voyage amidst personal affections, places experienced, history and the many personalities of the past to which he feels linked, including Giovanni Segantini, to whom the artist has dedicated several portraits and a large landscape (183 x 305 cm) included in the show. It is a tribute to the mountains of Engadin, and that region’s special sky and light that enchanted Segantini in his day, prompting him to spend much of his life there. The mountains and the blue sky are also the protagonists of the large work Abseiler, in which the figure of Tony Kurtz stands out in the void, a famous mountaineer of the 1900s who passed away due to exhaustion, hanging from a rope after an avalanche on the Eiger, in Switzerland.

Reference to historical events is also found in the work 1895, where Billy Childish again reinterprets the subject of the Thames and Medway Estuaries frozen during the winters of 1895 and 1947. Here the inspiration comes from old photographs found by the artist, on board an icebreaker during the cold spell of 1980. The idea of a world blocked by snow has been a seductive one for the artist since childhood. He is attracted by the power of cold that is able to trap ships, to stop time. The image is crystallized in Childish’s memory, a vision to which he now gives new life through dense brushstrokes charged with expressionist impact.

Since 2010 Billy Childish has received growing international acclaim, and institutions like White Columns in New York and the Institute of Contemporary Art of London have shown his work in important solo shows.
