Pensare di rintracciare le esperienze passate nella profondità della nostra mente è pura illusione, non c'è nulla da rintracciare, non esiste nessuna profondità mentale da cercare. Inventiamo interpretazioni di noi stessi e degli altri, dei nostri ricordi, a partire dalle percezioni del momento. L'introspezione non è percezione ma invenzione. La nostra mente improvvisa, decide ogni cosa con rapidità eccezionale. L'importante è rendere pensieri e comportamento coerenti.
Siamo animali progettati per creare nuovi mondi in funzione di ciò che percepiamo ma, soprattutto, siamo "animali narranti", creatori di storie in grado di plasmare la nostra identità, il nostro carattere e la nostra concezione del mondo.
VOLUME! è, sin dalla sua nascita, qualcosa di anormale, di non comune. Non tanto per quella che, apparentemente, è stata la sua caratteristica principale (permettere a ogni singolo artista di modificare in totale libertà lo spazio), quanto per quella ricercata sequenza narrativa, una vera e propria struttura, fatta di interventi di volta in volta diversi, pensati per creare una concatenazione di impressioni e di emozioni in dialogo tra loro.

In questa particolare fase storica, abbiamo deciso di modificare nuovamente il progetto e trasformare VOLUME! in uno spazio duale, una casa densa di ambiguità. Tramite una porta in legno su via di San Francesco di Sales si accede infatti a un ambiente caratterizzato da un colore non colore che invade le pareti, il pavimento e il soffitto. L'ambiente è pensato come una sorta di misteriosa sala d'attesa, uno spazio allo stesso tempo familiare e straniante, capace di variare nel tempo seppure in maniera impercettibile. Questo spazio diventa così una pausa necessaria tra il mondo esterno e il contatto con l'opera vera e propria che sarà realizzata dall'artista invitato. Quest'ultima potrà essere vista solo accedendo a un secondo ambiente, dopo che al visitatore sarà stato accordato il permesso di entrare. Nello spazio dedicato all’attesa l’artista non presenterà un intervento istallativo canonico, ma la creazione di un'atmosfera, di un momento di passaggio che possa ricucire una narrazione tra il mondo esterno e l'intervento pensato per il secondo spazio. Questo ambiente, privo di ogni riferimento spaziale, è progettato (su indicazione di Michele De Lucchi) per far vivere a ciascuno una personale esperienza percettiva, un momento di riflessione e di intimità con l'opera. Inevitabilmente si creerà una narrazione tra interno ed esterno: un’attesa attiva e un’immersione contemplativa.
Viviamo in un momento storico fatto di luce e oscurità, di spazi condivisi e spazi totalmente propri. All'interno di VOLUME! si vivrà questa stessa esperienza: la condivisione e l'attesa, e poi l'immersione in uno spazio in cui ci si possa sentire "a casa", nel "luogo tranquillo" di cui parla Peter Handke (magari a conclusione di quella che, sempre lo scrittore austriaco, chiama “giornata riuscita”); uno spazio senza spazio, senza spigoli, una stanza piccola in cui, però, è possibile smarrirsi.

La prima artista a confrontarsi con questo nuovo paradigma espositivo è Catherine Biocca che, con il suo intervento dal titolo “POV, You are my leftovers and I am happy to see you”, costruisce un ambiente complesso al fine di proporre una riflessione su questioni esistenziali nonché sul linguaggio o sull’uso della lingua.
VOLUME! diventa uno spazio in cui il riferimento al linguaggio – alla sua convenzionalità (ovvero a una sua artificiosa pulitura) e alla sua ambiguità – prende forma in diversi elementi che conducono all’incontro con una luce abbagliante, quasi ultraterrena, e con una domanda o, più correttamente, un consiglio o una richiesta, alla quale si fatica a dare una risposta.
Il lavoro di Biocca sembra ricordarci come la nostra capacità di schivare situazioni spiacevoli o di “rimettere a posto” qualcosa andato storto o non previsto ci mette solo apparentemente a riparo dal mondo esterno, da noi stessi e dalle domande che non osiamo farci. Sembra infatti chiedersi: cosa resta della nostra vita, della sua messa in scena, nonché dell’uso che abbiamo fatto della comunicazione? E cosa accade quando, improvvisamente, ci troviamo di fronte alla realtà o alle domande poste da chissà chi (forse un moderno oracolo) in maniera sibillina?

Catherine Biocca è nata a Roma nel 1984, dove si è laureata in Scienze Politiche nel 2006. Ha studiato all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Düsseldorf, dove ha ottenuto il suo BA e MA nel 2010 e 2013. Tra il 2014 e il 2015 è stata residente alla Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten di Amsterdam. Attualmente vive e lavora a Berlino e a Roma. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto in diverse mostre internazionali, come la terza Biennale di animazione di Shenzhen, Kunstverein Nürnberg e Kunstmuseum LOK St Gallen.

Thinking of tracing past experiences in the depths of our mind is pure illusion, there is nothing to trace, there is no mental depth to look for. We invent interpretations of ourselves and of other people, of our memories, starting from the perceptions of the moment. Introspection is not perception but invention. Our mind improvises, it decides everything with remarkable speed. The important aspect is to make thoughts and behaviour coherent.
We are animals designed to create new worlds according to what we perceive we are, above all, storytellers, creators of stories that shape our identity, our character and our conception of the world.
VOLUME! has been something unusual and uncommon since its beginning. Not so much for what was apparently its main feature (allowing to each single artist to modify the space in total freedom), but for that sought-after narrative sequence, a real structure, made up of different interventions each time, designed to create a concatenation of impressions and emotions in dialogue with each other.
In this particular historical phase, we decided to modify the project again and transform VOLUME! into a double space, a house full of ambiguity. In fact, through a wooden door on Via di San Francesco di Sales, we enter a room characterized by a non-colour that invades the walls, the floor and the ceiling. The room is conceived as a sort of mysterious waiting room, a space familiar and alienating at the same time, capable of changing over time, even if imperceptibly. This space thus becomes a necessary pause between the outside world and the actual work that will be created by the artist. The work itself can only be seen by entering a second room, after the visitor has been granted permission to enter. In the space dedicated to the wait, the artist will not present a canonical installation intervention, but the creation of an atmosphere, of a moment of passage that can sew a narrative between the outside world and the intervention designed for the second space. This environment, lacking any spatial reference, has been designed (under Michele De Lucchi's suggestion) to allow everyone to have a personal experience of perception, a moment of meditation and intimacy with the work. An inevitable dialogue will be created between inside and outside: an active wait and a contemplative immersion.
We live in a historical moment of light and darkness, of shared spaces and spaces that are totally our own. Within VOLUME! we will live this same experience: sharing and waiting, and then plunging into a space in which we can feel "at home", in the "quiet place" of which Peter Handke speaks (perhaps at the end of what the Austrian writer calls a "successful day"); a space without space, without edges, a small room in which, however, it is possible to get lost.

The first artist to confront this new exhibition concept is Catherine Biocca who, with her intervention entitled "POV, You are my leftovers and I am happy to see you", constructs a complex environment in order to propose a reflection on existential questions as well as on language or the use of it.
VOLUME! becomes a space in which the reference to language - to its conventionality (its artificial cleansing) and its ambiguity - takes shape in various elements that lead to an encounter with a dazzling, almost otherworldly light, and with a question or, more correctly, an advice or a request, to which it is difficult to give an answer. The presence of POV (Point Of View) in the title, in fact, alludes to videos posted on social platforms such as Tik Tok, in which an imaginary dialogue with the user is simulated, mimicking their point of view.
Biocca's work seems to remind us how our ability to dodge unpleasant situations or to " fix" something that has gone wrong or is unexpected, only apparently protects us from the outside world, from ourselves and from the questions we dare not ask ourselves. Indeed, it seems to ask: what is left of our life, of its enactment, and of our use of communication? And what happens when, suddenly, we are faced with reality or with questions posed by who knows who (perhaps a modern oracle) in a sibylline manner?
Catherine Biocca was born in Rome, Italy 1984 where she got her BA in Political Sciences at the Luiss University 2006. She studied fine arts at the Academy in Düsseldorf, where she got her BA and MA in 2010 and 2013. In 2014-2015 she was a resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. She currently lives and works in Berlin and in Rome. Her work was shown in several international shows, such as the 3rd animation Biennial Shenzhen, Kunstverein Nürnberg and Kunstmuseum LOK St Gallen.
