La Paolo Maria Deanesi Gallery è lieta di annunciare la nuova mostra personale Messaggio inviato dell’artista cubano Diango Hernández. A più di cinque anni dalla sua ultima esposizione in Italia ed esattamente dopo dieci anni dalla sua mostra antologica al MART di Rovereto a cura di Yilmaz Yewior (Living Rooms, a Survay), Hernández torna a Trento.
Diango Hernández (Sancti Spíritus, 1970, vive e lavora tra Düsseldorf e L’Avana) è considerato uno dei più affermati e influenti artisti cubani sulla scena internazionale. Tra i fondatori nel 1994 del collettivo Ordo Amoris Cabinet, gruppo creativo interessato a supplire alle carenze di forniture cubane attraverso un approccio alternativo all’home design, Hernández ha esposto nelle più importanti rassegne internazionali e nei più prestigiosi musei del mondo, grazie alle sue installazioni di ambienti e oggetti trovati focalizzate sulla memoria, la storia e la cultura della sua isola d’origine.
Alla sua terza mostra presso la Galleria Deanesi (dopo Revantgarde 2005 e Power Pencil 2007) l’artista torna in Italia con un corpus innovativo e inaspettato di opere. Il progetto, intitolato Messaggio inviato, porta all’attenzione del pubblico una delle sue ultime serie di waves-paintings. Incentrati sull’alfabeto minimale dell’onda, costruiti attraverso pennellate che ripetono ossessivamente questo marchio riconoscibile dell’identità caraibica, le opere pittoriche presentate in mostra riescono a dare forma a tutto l’universo possibile con un intento orgogliosamente decorativo ed estetico. In questo caso, sono le nature morte di Giorgio Morandi a venire animante e decontestualizzate dalle “onde” di Hernández. Le bottiglie morandiane diventano così canali comunicativi persi nell’oceano in attesa di essere raccolte da qualche sconosciuto per portare il loro messaggio di ottimismo e sincretismo culturale. L’Avana e Bologna non sono mai state così vicine.
La mostra è accompagnata da una lettera del critico e curatore Andrés Isaac Santana indirizzata a Hernández stesso nella quale, con un tono poetico ed evocativo, si allude alle ragioni della mostra. “Non esagero se dico che Giorgio Morandi tornerebbe in vita per abbracciarti. Te lo scrivo dal mio scrittoio, attraverso l'unico mezzo che ritengo degno della bellezza che risuona nelle tue bottiglie. Bottiglie che contengono la voce condensata e la supplica dei nostri tempi, che rivelano la nostra condizione illuminata e indigente allo stesso tempo”.

Diango Hernández inizia la sua carriera artistica a Cuba nel 1994 come cofondatore dell’Ordo Amoris Cabinet, un gruppo di artisti e designer interessati a trovare soluzioni per oggetti di home design che compensassero la costante mancanza di materiali e beni. L’artista si sposta in Europa nel 2003 e attualmente vive e lavora a Düsseldorf. Il suo lavoro è stato oggetto di approfondimenti espositivi alla Kunsthalle, Basel (2006) e al Neuer Aachener Kunstverein (2007). I suoi lavori sono stati esposti all’Arsenale come parte della 51a Biennale di Venezia (2005), alla Biennale di Sidney e alla Biennale di San Paolo, entrambe nel 2006. La sua opera è stata anche esposta nell’importante mostra Losing You Tonight, al Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Siegen (2009), mentre nel 2010 due installazione sono inserite in The New Décor alla Hayward Gallery di Londra. Un’antologica del suo percorso viene allestita al Museo di arte moderna e contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto (MART) nel 2011-2012. Nel 2013 la Marlborough Contemporary di Londra presenta una sua personale intitolata The New Man and the New Woman. Altre mostre personali vengono allestite alla Landesgalerie di Linz (Social Nature, 2014), alla Marlborough Contemporary di Londra, alla Kunsthalle di Munster nel 2015 e al Museum Morsbroich Leverkusen nel 2017 (Theoretical Beach). Nel 2017 la sua ultima personale in uno spazio pubblico Sobre las olas viene presentata alla Kunsthalle Lingen.

Paolo Maria Deanesi Gallery is pleased to announce Messagio Inviato a new solo exhibition of Cuban artist Diango Hernández. More than five years after his last solo exhibition in Italy and precisely ten years after his anthological survey curated by Yilmaz Yewior at Mart Museum in Rovereto (Living Rooms, a survey) Hernández returns to Trento.
Diango Hernández (Sancti Spíritus, 1970, lives and works between Düsseldorf and Havana) is considered one of the most established and influential Cuban artists in the international art-scene. Among the founders of the collaboration experience Ordo Amoris Cabinet – a creative group devoted to make up for the shortage of Cuban supplies through an alternative approach to home-design – Hernández took part in many important international shows, exhibiting in the most prestigious museums in the world. With his complex installations of environments and sourced materials he focuses on the themes of his home country’s memory, history and culture.
In this third exhibition at Deanesi Gallery (after Revantgarde 2005 and Power Pencil 2007), the artist come back in Italy with an innovative and unexpected body of works. The project, titled Messaggio inviato (Message sent), presents to the Italian public a new corpus of his wave-paintings. These paintings, based on the minimal alphabet of the wave and made by an obsessive repetition of this recognizable “trademark” of the Caribbean identity, are able to shape the entire universe with a decorative and aesthetic aim. In this case, Hernández’s waves animate and de-contextualize Giorgio Morandi’s Still-lives. For Hernández Morandi’s bottles become a new communication tool, bottle lost in the ocean, waiting to be found by someone, waiting to be read. Havana and Bologna have never been so close.
The exhibition is presented by a letter of the curator and art critic Andrés Isaac Santana addressed to Hernández himself. In this missive, with a poetic and evocative spirit, Santana talks about the reasons of the project. “I don’t think that I am going too far if I say that Giorgio Morandi would have come back to life to hug you. I write this from my writing desk, through the only mean that I judge at the same level of the beauty that resonate in your bottles. Bottles that contain the condensed voice and the plea of our times, bottles that reveal our condition, illuminated and poor at the same time”.

Diango Hernández began his artistic practice in Cuba in 1994 as a co-founder of Ordo Amoris Cabinet, a group of artists and designers who focused on invented solutions for home design objects to compensate for a permanent shortage of materials and goods. The artist moved to Europe in 2003 and currently lives and works in Düsseldorf. His work was the subject of solo exhibitions at the Kunsthalle, Basel (2006) and the Neuer Aachener Kunstverein (2007). His work was exhibited in the Arsenale as part of the 51st Venice Biennale and the Biennale of Sydney and the São Paulo Biennial, both in 2006. His work was the subject of a critically acclaimed exhibition of new work, Losing You Tonight, at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Siegen (2009) and in 2010 two installations were included in The New Décor at the Hayward Gallery, London. A survey exhibition of his work took place at Museo di arte moderna e contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto (MART) in Rovereto in 2011-2012. In 2013, Marlborough Contemporary, London presented a solo exhibition of his work The New Man and the New Woman. His work was the subject of a solo exhibition Socialist Nature in 2014 at Landesgalerie, Linz. Hernández has had solo exhibitions at Marlborough Contemporary, London and the Kunsthalle Munster in 2015. In 2016, a solo exhibition of Hernández’s work, titled Theoretical Beach, took place at the Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen. In 2017, his last public solo show Sobre las olas took place at Kunsthalle Lingen in Germany.
