Dal 6 aprile l’Event Pavilion di T Fondaco dei Tedeschi presenta Greetings from Venice, un’installazione site-specific dell’artista Elisabetta Di Maggio, a cura di Chiara Bertola. Dopo il successo di pubblico ottenuto dall’opera di Fabrizio Plessi Under Water e dall’installazione Waterbones di Loris Cecchini, lo spazio dedicato alle proposte culturali – all’interno del nuovo lifestyle department store di DFS nel cuore di Venezia – torna all’arte contemporanea con un allestimento evocativo e profondo, dove la bellezza suggestiva e ipnotica del lavoro manuale dell’artista si intreccia con spunti di riflessione sul tempo e sulla natura delle relazioni.
Con questo terzo allestimento, il gruppo DFS conferma la sua volontà di far tornare il T Fondaco dei Tedeschi alla sua antica vocazione di luogo in cui convergono e si intrecciano cultura e commercio, tradizioni secolari e contemporaneità, visitatori locali e internazionali.
All’interno dello spazio reinterpretato dall’artista proseguiranno le attività culturali promosse dal T Fondaco dei Tedeschi: concerti, incontri letterari, performance di danza contemporanea e videoproiezioni, organizzate in collaborazione con le istituzioni culturali di Venezia.
Aperto gratuitamente al pubblico tutti i giorni, l’Event Pavilion ospiterà l’installazione Greetings from Venice di Elisabetta Di Maggio fino al 25 novembre 2018.
Il Fondaco dei Tedeschi e l’Event Pavilion – storia e contemporaneità
Costruito nel 1222, il Fondaco dei Tedeschi è assegnato dal Senato per la gestione dei “mercati tedeschi”, che all’epoca erano tutti quelli che provenivano d’Oltralpe. Il termine “Fondaco” è tradotto come “magazzino”, “osteria”, “albergo” e proviene da una combinazione di parole arabe, greche e bizantine, testimoniando gli stretti legami tra Venezia e l’Oriente. È un luogo di vita per i mercanti durante la loro permanenza a Venezia e allo stesso tempo un posto sicuro dove tenere le merci acquistate in loco o portate dall’Estero.
Fino al 1797 – anno in cui chiude in seguito alla caduta della Repubblica Serenissima – il Fondaco dei Tedeschi è l’emblema del potere mercantile di Venezia, importante piattaforma di scambi economici e vero e proprio ponte tra culture orientali e occidentali. In seguito, l’edificio ospita uffici di controllo doganale ed è oggetto di un importante lavoro di ristrutturazione per trasformarlo in sede delle Poste (dal 1930 al 2007).
Nel 2008 Benetton acquista l’edificio e ne affida il restauro all’architetto olandese Rem Koolhaas. Nell’ottobre 2016 il Fondaco dei Tedeschi riapre al pubblico come T Fondaco dei Tedeschi, lifestyle department store gestito dal gruppo DFS. Il suo arredamento viene affidato all’architetto Jamie Fobert.
Convinto che il lusso non si limiti a oggetti e prodotti, ma si riferisca anche alla storia e al patrimonio, DFS ha dedicato all’interno del T Fondaco dei Tedeschi un intero spazio ad allestimenti espositivi ed eventi culturali: l’Event Pavilion. Collocato al quarto piano dell’edificio rappresenta, da un punto di vista conservativo, strutturale e architettonico, uno degli interventi più ambiziosi del progetto di ristrutturazione condotto da OMA, lo studio architettonico di Rem Koolhaas.
L’Event Pavilion, grazie al programma culturale che ospita, ambisce a restituire al Fondaco dei Tedeschi il suo ruolo di collegamento e trasmissione. In collaborazione con artisti e istituzioni locali, un fitto calendario di proposte culturali è organizzato all’interno di questo spazio, per invitare i visitatori, sia internazionali che locali, a scoprire o riscoprire la storia, la cultura e lo stile di vita di Venezia.
Con il suo programma culturale, DFS vuole promuovere le eccellenze, le risorse e le tradizioni del territorio grazie all’espressione creativa degli artisti e posizionare il T Fondaco dei Tedeschi come una nuova e originale meta per le arti e la cultura a Venezia.

From 6 April 2018, the Event Pavilion presents Greetings from Venice, a site-specific installation from the Italian artist Elisabetta Di Maggio, curated by Chiara Bertola. After the great public acclaim achieved by the work of Fabrizio Plessi Under Water and by the installation Waterbones by Loris Cecchini, the area devoted to different cultural events — located in the new lifestyle department store of DFS in the heart of Venezia — is back to contemporary art with an evocative and intimate installation, where the suggestive and hypnotic beauty of the artist's manual work intertwines with food for thought about time and the nature of relationships.
With this third exhibition, the DFS group confirms its will to bring the T Fondaco dei Tedeschi back to its old vocation of a place where culture, trade, secular traditions and contemporaneity, local and international visitors, all converge and intertwine.
The space reinterpreted by the artis, will continue to host the cultural activities promoted by the T Fondaco dei Tedeschi: concerts, literary meetings, contemporary dance performances and video screenings, organized in collaboration with the cultural institutions of Venice.
Open every day to the public freely, the Event Pavilion will host the work Greetings from Venice by Elisabetta Di Maggio until 25 November 2018.
The Fondaco dei Tedeschi and the Event Pavilion – past and present
Built in 1222, the Fondaco dei Tedeschi is assigned by the Senate for the management of "German markets", which at the time corresponded to all the countries beyond the Alps. The term "Fondaco" is translated as "stock", "tavern", "hotel" and comes from a combination of Arabic, Greek and Byzantine words, demonstrating the close links between Venice and the East. It is a place of life for merchants during their stay in Venice and at the same time a safe place to keep their goods bought locally or abroad.
Until the 1797 – year that marks the fall of the Venetian Republic – the Fondaco dei Tedeschi is the symbol of the mercantile power of Venice, an important platform for economic trade and a bridge between Eastern and Western cultures. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the building houses the offices of customs control. It is then subject to a major refit to turn into the Central Post Office, which it will stay from 1930 to 2007.
In 2008 Benetton buys the building and entrusted the restoration to the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. In October 2016 the Fondaco dei Tedeschi reopens to the public as T Fondaco dei Tedeschi, lifestyle department store operated by DFS Group. Its decor is entrusted to architect Jamie Fobert.
A strong believer in the fact that luxury is not only about products but equally relates to heritage and culture, DFS has devoted an entire space within the T Fondaco dei Tedeschi to arts and cultural activities: the Event Pavilion. Located on the fourth floor of the T Fondaco dei Tedeschi, the Pavilion represents, under the conservation, structural and architectural point of view, one of the most ambitious interventions within the restoration project carried out by Rem Koolhaas’ studio OMA.
Through the cultural program host within the Event Pavilion, DFS aims to promote and value local traditions and knowhow through artists’ creative means of expression and position the T Fondaco dei Tedeschi as a new and original venue for arts and culture in Venice. In partnership with local artists and institutions, a series of exhibitions and a wide range of cultural initiatives, such as talks, concerts and screenings, are accommodated within this new space.
