The film that artist and filmmaker Eva Giolo presents at Ar/Ge Kunst is the upshot of a year and a half of research in the Ladin valleys. Filmed in 16mm, Memory Is an Animal, It Barks with Many Mouths is a project that was commissioned and produced by Ar/Ge Kunst with Biennale Gherdëina 9 and the support of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund.

Surrounding the Dolomite Mountains, children reimagine ancient Ladin legends while they examine holes, caves and bodies of water looking for something lost or forgotten. Through a poetic choreography the film becomes a fictional journey connecting past and present. Creating resonances between the landscape, myths, legends and Ladin - the protected old Rhaeto-Romanic language of the valleys - a puzzle unfolds as a timeless fable.

Eva Giolo (1991, Belgium) is an artist working on analogue film. Her work places particular focus on the female experience, employing experimental and documentary strategies to explore themes of intimacy, permanence and memory, along with the analysis of language and semiotics. Her work has been widely exhibited at festivals, museums and galleries internationally, including Sadie Coles HQ, Harlan Levey Projects, WIELS, MAXXI–National Museum of 21st Century Art, Kunsthalle Wien, International Film Festival Rotterdam,  Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Viennale, FIDMarseille, Vision du Réel and New York Film Festival, among others. She is co-founder of the production and distribution platform elephy.

Il film che l’artista e filmmaker Eva Giolo presenta ad Ar/GeKunst è il risultato di un anno e mezzo di ricerca nelle valli ladine. Girato in 16mm, Memory  Is an Animal, It Barks with Many Mouths (La memoria è un animale, abbaia con diverse bocche) è stato commissionato e prodotto da Ar/Ge Kunst con la Biennale Gherdëina 9 e con il supporto del Flanders Audiovisual Fund.

Ambientato nelle valli che circondano le montagne delle Dolomiti, dei bambini immaginano le antiche leggende ladine mentre esaminano specchi d'acqua, buche e grotte alla ricerca di qualcosa di perduto o dimenticato. Attraverso una coreografia poetica, il film diventa un viaggio immaginario che collega passato e presente. Creando risonanze tra il paesaggio, miti, leggende e la lingua ladina - l'antico idioma retoromanzo protetto delle valli - un puzzle si dispiega come una favola senza tempo.

Eva Giolo (1991, Belgio) è un'artista che lavora su pellicola analogica. Il suo lavoro si concentra in particolare sull'esperienza femminile, utilizzando strategie sperimentali e documentaristiche per esplorare i temi dell'intimità, della permanenza e della memoria, insieme all'analisi del linguaggio e della semiotica. Der Film, den die Künstlerin und Filmemacherin Eva Giolo in der Ar/Ge Kunst vorstellt, ist das Ergebnis einer anderthalbjährigen Recherche in den ladinischen Tälern. Das Werk Memory Is an Animal, It Barks with Many Mouths (Die Erinnerung ist ein Tier, sie bellt mit vielen Mäulern) wurde im 16-mm-Format gedreht und von der Ar/Ge Kunst zusammen mit der Biennale Gherdëina 9 sowie mit Unterstützung des Flanders Audiovisual Fund in Auftrag gegeben und produziert.In den Gebirgstälern rund um die Dolomiten erfinden Kinder alte ladinische Sagen neu, während sie Löcher im Boden, Höhlen und Gewässer auf der Suche nach etwas Verlorenem oder Vergessenem erkunden. Anhand einer poetischen Choreografie unternimmt der Film eine imaginäre Reise, die Vergangenheit und Gegenwart miteinander verschränkt. Es entstehen Resonanzen zwischen der Landschaft, ihren Mythen und Sagen sowie der ladinischen Sprache, dem in den Tälern gepflegten alten rätoromanischen Idiom – in einem Puzzle, das sich als zeitlose Fabel entfaltet.

Die Künstlerin Eva Giolo (1991, Belgien) arbeitet mit analogem Film.
