Gavin Russom – Zombi (scratch mix)
Una scultura rappresenta una barca (riferita a una scena del film Zombi 2 di Lucio Fulci), un’altra reimmagina le Twin Towers di New York, alcuni disegni suggeriscono lo spirito della giungla all’interno dello spazio urbano. La mostra evoca una nuova energia che nasce nella citta’ contemporanea.

La Galleria Fonti è lieta di presentare “Zombi (scratch mix)”, prima mostra personale di Gavin Russom.
Nel 2005 presso la Galleria Fonti e nel 2007 ad Art Basel Statements, l’artista ha già esposto in collaborazione con Delia Gonzalez.
Il nuovo progetto espositivo di Gavin Russom prende spunto dalla scena di apertura di “Zombi 2”, il film (1979) del regista Lucio Fulci. La scena, sullo sfondo si vedono le allora ancora esistenti Twin Towers, mostra uno yacht, in apparenza abbandonato e alla deriva, nel porto di New York. Il concetto principale della mostra è la visione contrastante della grande città industriale, di cui le Twin Towers rimangono un simbolo storico legato alle corporates ed al potere, con la barca danneggiata che proviene dalla giungla e che trasporta zombies.
«Sto realizzando una mostra che vive nello spazio tra questi due simboli. Ho realizzato due opere scultoree con cartoni ed altri materiali semplici. Le sculture sono grossolane e interamente fatte a mano e creano un netto contrasto con l’estetica pulita e lineare della galleria.
Una scultura, esposta nella seconda stanza della galleria, rappresenta una barca (con riferimento alla prima scena del film di Fulci) l’altra, esposta nella prima stanza, reimmagina le Twin Towers come se fossero l’una un nativo Indo Americano e l’altra una tradizionale strega Europea. Ho anche realizzato alcuni disegni che suggeriscono lo spirito della giungla all’interno dello spazio urbano. I disegni hanno immagini fortemente sovrapposte, psichedeliche e mostrano più prospettive allo stesso tempo. Il tema della mostra evoca una nuova energia che nasce nella città contemporanea, che si lega a tutto ciò che è in relazione con il mondo naturale e che si sprigiona attraverso la magia, lo spirito, un movimento radicale».
Gavin Russom è nato in Providence nel 1974, vive e lavora a New York.
E’ musicista, produttore, DJ e artista visivo. Il suo lavoro esplora, attraverso vari media, il modo in cui suono, visione e spazio riescono a trasformare la coscienza e a mettere in contatto l’individuo con l’energia vitale presente in tutte le cose terren e. Russom ha cominciato a sperimentare con il suono e con il rumore all’età di dieci anni, ma la sua prima registrazione nasce dalla sua intensa collaborazione dal 1998-2007 con la visionaria Delia Gonzalez. Questo sodalizio multimediale portò alla produzione di composizioni elettroniche espansive, in gran parte realizzate con sintetizzatori analogici disegnati dallo stesso Russom, e anche alla creazione di installazioni sonore esposte in numerosi musei e gallerie internazionali che rendono più sottile la linea di demarcazione tra musica ed arte visiva. Delia and Gavin – uno dei tanti nomi con cui il duo ha realizzato performances e registrazioni – produss ero nel 2005 The Days of Mars, album fortem ente criticato, che risulta essere un’ epopea psi chedelica ch e attinge ai più disparati campi di in fluenza, inclusi i ritual drumming, i canti devozionali, lo spiritual jazz, le composizioni minimaliste del ventesimo secolo, la musica kosmische, la disco europea e la techno di Detroit.
Seguendo queste forme pionieristiche, l’esplorazione musicale di Russom è proseguita con Black Meteoric Star, un progetto da solista attraverso il quale ha prodotto una serie di tre singles da 12" a narrativa congiunta, ispirati dall’utilizzo della ripetizione del trance-indu cing nella danza el ettronica e nel rock psichedelico. Nel 2009 ha cominciato a collaborare con la performer e film maker Viva Ruiz in The Crystal Ark, un tentativo di musical continuo con centrato sul ritmo, sulla fisicità ed il movimento.

Galleria Fonti is pleased to present “Zombi (scratch mix)”, Gavin Russom’ first solo show. The artist in 2005 a t Galleria Fonti Naples and in 2007 at Art Basel Sta tements, has already showed in collaboration with artist Delia Gonzalez.
Gavin Russom’s new project starts from the opening scene o f “ Zombi 2”, the Lucio Fulci movie of 1979. The scene shows an apparently abandoned yacht dri fts into New York Harbor with the sight of the still existing Twin Towers in the background. The main idea o f the show is this contrasting vision o f the big industrial city, particularly th e Twin Towers which remain the symbol of corporat e money and power, and the damaged boat which is coming from the jungle carrying zombies.
«I am ma king a show that lives in this space, the space between thes e two symbols. I'm going to make two sculptural pieces from found cardboard and other simple materials. The sculptures are really handmade and rough, and make a sharp contrast with the hyper clean and cool aesthetic of the gallery itself.
One sculpture, showed in the second room of the gallery, is of a boat (referred to the first scene of Fulci’s movie). The other sculpture, placed in the first room of the galler y, reimagines the Twin Towers as a native American Indian and a traditional European witch.
I also realized drawings which suggest the spirit of the jungle within the urban space. The drawings will be heavily layer ed, psyched elic, showing multiple perspectives at the same time. The theme of the exhibition evokes a new en ergy in the contemporary city, related to all those things in harmony with the natural world, rising up through magic, spirit and radical movement».
Gavin Russom was born in Providence, 1974, lives and works in New York.
Is a musician, producer, DJ and visual artist. His work across various media explores the ways in which sound, vision and space can trans fo rm consciousness and connect the individual with the vital energy present in all earthly things. Russom began experimenting with sound and noise as early as his teen years, but his first reco rded output resulted from his intense 1998-2007 collaboration with co -visionary Delia Gon zalez. That multimedia partnership yielded expansive elect ronic compositions largely built upon Russom's self-designed analog synthesizers, as well as sound installations blurring the lines between music and visual art that exhibited in sev eral intern ational museums and galleri es. Delia & Gavin – just one o f many names under which the duo performed and record ed – produced the critically hailed 2005 album The Days of Mars, a vivid psychedelic epic that draws upon disparate fi elds o f in fluence including ritual drumming, devotional chants, spiritual jazz, 20th century minimalist composition, kosmische musik, European dis co and Detroit techno. Following that g roundbreaking releas e, Russom’s musical explorations continued with Black Meteoric Star, a solo project through which he produced a seri es o f three narratively-conjoined 12" singles inspired by the use o f tran ce-inducing rep etition in early el ectronic d ance music and psychedelic ro ck. In 2009, he began working with performan ce artist and filmmaker Viva Ruiz in The Crystal Ark, an ongoing musical endeavor fo cused on rhythm, physicality and movement.
