Gianluca Malgeri – Insha’Allah

Magazzino inaugura la nuova stagione espositiva con la mostra di Gianluca Malgeri dal titolo Insha’Allah. Magazzino inaugura la nuova stagione espositiva con la mostra di Gianluca Malgeri dal
titolo Insha’Allah. Per la sua seconda personale in galleria Malgeri presenta la prima tappa di un
work in progress sviluppato durante gli ultimi 15 mesi, nei quali l’artista ha viaggiato tra la
Giordania, la Turchia e l’Italia.
La mostra parte da una riflessione sul concetto di mappatura, intesa come formazione e
descrizione di uno spazio non fisico, trasformata da Malgeri in una serie di ambienti connotati
da un immaginario che guarda e si riferisce ad un territorio culturale in continua oscillazione. In
questo territorio, e in questa mappatura, rientrano una serie di oggetti, testimonianze e
immagini raccolte dall’artista e disposte in un percorso segnato da una continua tensione tra gli
elementi della mostra e all’interno delle opere stesse, dove coesistono e si sovrappongono
polarità comuni come oriente e occidente, maschile e femminile, razionalismo ed empirismo.
Così la mappa viene tradotta in un segno sulla figura umana, a sua volta disegnata in
modo ambiguo tra caratteri femminili e una costante suggestione –di contro- generata da
figure maschili della storia dell’arte (San Sebastiano, Adamo, Orfeo). L’idea della raccolta, della
collezione non ordinata, è uno degli espedienti che l’artista usa per disegnare questa mappa; la
raccolta che Malgeri mostra non è però legata all’oggetto trovato tout-court: gli oggetti presenti
sono infatti proiezioni, ricostruzioni, sintesi di informazioni ed immagini scelte dall’artista per
descrivere il territorio del suo orientalismo, che esclude la forma ma assume l’esperienza a
dato soggettivo ed oggettivo allo stesso tempo.
L’odalisca, l’eunuco, le monete antiche, i pani, i fiori (solo per citare alcuni dei riferimenti
presenti) sono traduzioni oggettive di un astratto che precede l’immagine e la sua provenienza.
Come in una nuova mitologia, Malgeri invita a riconsiderare le caratteristiche di ciò che
comunemente definiamo “cultura” e che affonda radici molto più profonde di quanto il
razionalismo storico tenda a concedere.

Gianluca Malgeri è nato a Reggio Calabria nel 1974. Dopo aver frequentato l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze
partecipa nel 2001 al Corso Superiore di Arti Visive della Fondazione Antonio Ratti di Como, visiting professor
Marina Abramovic. Dal 2001 al 2003 studia allo IUAV di Venezia con Olafur Eliasson, col quale collaborerà come
assistente per i successivi cinque anni dopo essersi trasferito a Berlino, dove attualmente vive e lavora. Nel 2010
ha vinto il premio del Kempinski Arts Support Program con la residenza Giordania. Da segnalare la sua mostra
personale Pese et Vainque, GaleriArtist di Istanbul (2011), la collettiva ITaliens all’Ambasciata Italiana in Germania

Magazzino is pleased to present a new exhibition by Gianluca Malgeri entitled
Insha’Allah. For his second solo exhibition with the gallery, Malgeri will present the first
formalization of a work in progress that has been developed throughout the last 15 months,
during which the artist travelled between Jordan, Turkey and Italy.
The exhibition results from a reflection over the concept of mapping, intended as a
formation and description of a non-physical space, transformed by Malgeri into a series of
rooms connoted by an imagery that refer to a cultural territory in continuous oscillation. Within
this territory and this mapping, there is a series of objects, images and testimonies collected by
the artist and arranged in a path marked by constant tension between elements, within the
exhibition and within the works themselves, where they coexist and overlap common polarities:
East and West, male and female, rationalism and empiricism.
Thus the map is translated into a sign inscribed on the human figure, which is drawn
with a sense of ambiguity between female characteristics and a constant suggestion generated
– in turn – by iconic male figures in the history of art, such as San Sebastian, Adam, or
Orpheus. The idea of presenting a collection without an order is one of the expedients that
Malgeri uses to draw this map; the collection that Malgeri shows is not linked to the found
object tout court: its contents are in facts projections, reconstructions, synthesis of information
and images chosen by the artist to describe the territory of his orientalism, which excludes
form but assumes the experiential datum as subjective and objective at the same time.
The odalisque, the eunuch, ancient coins, breads, flowers (just to mention some of the
references) are objective translations of an abstract that comes before the image and its
origin. As in a new mythology, Malgeri invites to reconsider the characteristics of what we
commonly call "culture" that sinks its roots much deeper than the old rationalism tends to give.

Gianluca Malgeri was born in Reggio Calabria in 1974. After attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, he is
fellow in the 2001 Advanced Course in Visual Arts at Fondazione Antonio Ratti in Como, with visiting professor
Marina Abramovic. From 2001 to 2003 he studied at IUAV of Venice with Olafur Eliasson, with whom he worked
as an assistant for five years after moving to Berlin, where he currently lives and works. In 2010 he won the prize
at the Kempinski Arts Support Program with the residency in Jordan. Among his exhibitions, to note Pese et
