Hyun Cho – Does Fluxus Still Exist?

Hyun Cho (n. 1982, Corea del Sud) usa scultura, linguaggio, luce e oggetti cinetici per creare le sue opere. Sperimenta idee di rappresentazione e riappropriazione usando oggetti trovati e creando assemblaggi scultorei che formano gesti minimalisti.

Fluxus esiste ancora? - il titolo della mostra che porta le forme scultoree assemblate da Cho all'interno delle mura della Galleria Ramo, esplora il suo assoluto uso interdisciplinare degli strumenti, l'abolizione delle regole compositive classiche, l'importanza data al processo creativo e l'integrazione radicale tra arte e vita . Un gioco di parole sul movimento Fluxus nato negli anni '60, che si concentrava sul processo artistico piuttosto che sul prodotto finito. La ricerca di Cho sugli oggetti trovati e la combinazione del linguaggio si rifà al movimento Fluxus, tuttavia, reinventandolo in una forma di espressione corrente/attuale rendendo i materiali nelle sue opere il concetto della sua pratica artistica.

Interrogando l'apparente significato originale degli oggetti di tutti i giorni, Cho utilizza la tecnologia e stimoli visivi (come se le sue sculture fossero vere e performanti) per esplorare ed espandere le sue percezioni del suo ambiente e del suo processo artistico. Scherza con parole umoristiche come "hunky, funky, junky" e allo stesso tempo riflette sull'attuale iconografia urbana e popolare, creando singoli o possibili avvertimenti. Concentrandosi su alcune sottoculture (cultura giovanile, punk / subculture alterativa, ecc.) in una forma non nostalgica le consente di essere più investita nell'ingegnerizzazione del significato e della comprensione. Cho riesce a creare un set in cui l'arte diventa vita.

Hyun Cho ha completato un Bachelor of Fine Arts all'Università di Sydney in Australia e un Master of Fine Arts alla Parsons The New School for Design di New York. Le mostre personali di Cho includono; Smoking Channel, Edicola Radetzky, Milano, CODICE È WATER, DISPLAY, Parma nel 2018, "Midnight Deli", Open Space Baltimore, MD nel 2016, "YAYAYA", Conduits Arts, Melbourne, Australia nel 2014 e "Rocking On Empty" , Fowler Project Space, NY nel 2013. Ha partecipato nello scorso anno a Palazzo Monti Residency. Ha collaborato a mostre collettive a Lastik, Istanbul, Sleep Center, New York NY, The Gateway Project, Newark NJ, 127 Halsey Street, Newark NJ, Skunkworks Art Space, Sydney Australia, APT16 Artspace, Newark NJ e Calico, Brooklyn NY.

Hyun Cho (b. 1982, South Korea) uses sculpture, language, light and kinetic objects to create her works. Experimenting with ideas of representation and re-appropriation using found objects and creating sculptural assemblages forming minimalist gestures.

Does Fluxus still exist? - the title of the exhibition brings the sculptural forms assembled by Cho within the walls of Galleria Ramo, exploring her absolute interdisciplinary use of instruments, the abolition of classical compositional rules, the importance given to the creative process and the radical integration between art and life. A pun on the Fluxus movement born in the 1960’s, which focused on the artistic process rather than the finished product, Cho’s research of found objects and the combination of language adopts the Fluxus movement however, reinventing it into a current form of expression. Making the materials in her work the concept of her artistic practice.

Questioning the apparent original meaning of everyday objects Cho uses technology and visual stimulations (as if her sculptures were alive and performing) to explore and expand her perceptions of her surroundings and her artistic process. She jokes with humorous words such as “hunky, funky, junky” whilst at the same time reflecting on current urban and popular iconography, creating singles or possibly warnings. Focusing on certain subcultures (youth culture, punk/alterative subculture, etc) in a non nostalgic form allows her to be more invested in engineering of meaning and understanding. Cho manages to create a set in which art becomes life.

Hyun Cho has completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Sydney in Australia and a Master of Fine Arts from Parsons The New School for Design in New York.
