#Inside: Mimmo Jodice. Fotografare il tempo

The talk will explore aspects related to the exhibition Mimmo Jodice. Senza Tempo, through January 7, 2024 at the Gallerie d'Italia in Turin.
Mimmo Jodice observes the world, lingering on the threshold of a time in which the past, the present and the future are intertwined, a time placed beyond its own flow, suspended in the physical and metaphysical, empirical and contemplative dimension of waiting. A wait that is the matrix of a rigorously analogue and manual practice of photography: a patient search for lighting, often in the morning, capable of revealing the essence of the subject represented, or the equally patient balancing of blacks and whites in the darkroom. Jodice achieves the clarity of black-and-white images captured by a camera that becomes a time machine (or, rather, a machine that overcomes time) in the enchanted exploration of the world from the underbelly of Naples to the shores of the Mediterranean with their vestiges of ancient civilisations that have now disappeared, all the way to the phantasmagorical confines of globalised megalopolises. Each of these shots celebrates the human being, captured in all its relative expressions and transfigured into a photographic reality that, regardless of time or context, emancipates photography from a merely documentary interpretation to make it express its full representative and cognitive potential.

Mimmo Jodice osserva il mondo soffermandoci sulle soglie di un tempo in cui si intrecciano il passato il presente e il futuro un tempo posto al di là del suo stesso scorrere sospeso nella dimensione - fisica e metafisica, empirica e contemplativa - dell’attesa. Un’attesa che è matrice di una pratica rigorosamente analogica e manuale della fotografia: ricerca paziente dell’illuminazione, spesso mattutina, in grado di rilevare l’essenza del soggetto rappresentato, o altrettanto paziente bilanciamento dei bianchi e dei neri in camera oscura. Jodice perviene così al nitore di immagini in bianco e nero restituite da una macchina da presa che si fa macchina del tempo (o, meglio, del suo superamento) nell’incantata perlustrazione del mondo dal ventre di Napoli alle sponde del Mediterraneo con le loro vestigia di antiche civiltà ormai scomparse, fino ai fantasmatici confini delle megalopoli globalizzate. Ognuno di questi scatti celebra l’umano, colto in tutte le sue espressioni relative e trasfigurato in una realtà fotografica che, prescindendo da epoche o contesti, emancipa la fotografia stessa da un interpretazione meramente documentaria per farle esprimere tutte le sue potenzialità rappresentative e conoscitive.
