Giovedì 8 febbraio 2024 Quartz Studio è lieto di presentare un progetto speciale, concepito come un dialogo tra Isabell Heimerdinger (Stoccarda, Germania, 1963) e Jonathan Monk (Leicester, UK, 1969). Coppia anche nella vita, Heimerdinger e Monk riflettono sull’Italia, partendo dalla loro esperienza romana di alcuni anni fa, in una mostra in cui i ricordi si mescolano all’immaginario dei viaggiatori del grand tour. Suggestioni e tecniche diverse si affastellano nello spazio, dal neon Le silence al dittico di mosaici di Isabell Heimerdinger, dalla collezione di magneti al tavolo in legno a forma di stivale après Luciano Fabro di Jonathan Monk (a sua volta base per opere ceramiche della Heimerdinger). Sacralità e irriverenza, gioco e morte sono i temi scaturiti dal cortocircuito generato dall’incontro tra Heimerdinger e Monk, in occasione della bipersonale da Quartz a Torino.
Isabell Heimerdinger (Stoccarda, Germania, 1963) vive e lavora a Berlino. Il tema centrale del suo lavoro è il cinema e le condizioni della sua produzione. Nelle opere fotografiche, scultoree e cinematografiche l’artista indaga le sottili differenze tra interpretazione e autenticità, tra ruolo e identità. Se le ambientazioni dei suoi film sono sempre reali, i diversi personaggi sanno nascondere bene i propri segreti. Nel 2020 Heimerdinger è stata premiata per il corto sperimentale SOON IT WILL BE DARK al FIDMarseille, il Festival internazionale di cinema di Marsiglia. Dal 2016 ha anche uno studio di ceramica in cui esplora il delicato confine tra ceramica funzionale e arte. Le sue opere sono state esposte in personali alla Berlinische Galerie di Berlino (2016), al MNK Museum für Neue Kunst di Karlsruhe (2008), al centro Western Front di Vancouver (2007), allo Swiss Institute di New York (2003) e al FRAC Fonds régional d’art contemporain Pays de la Loire di Nantes (2000). I suoi film sono stati proiettati al Videoart at Midnight (un progetto di Olaf Stüber e Ivo Wessel) #59: Isabell Heimerdinger, Kino Babylon (2014), all’Art Film/Art Basel, Stadtkino Basel di Basilea (2012), all’Experimental Shorts, Short Experiments, Kino Arsenal di Berlino (2011), al Centre Pompidou di Parigi (2010), al Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, Louvre Auditorium & Haus der Kulturen der Welt (2021) e Soon It Will Be Dark al Belvedere 21 di Vienna (2021). L’artista ha inoltre partecipato a numerose mostre collettive esposte alla Daimler Collection di Berlino (2021), alla Kunsthalle Erfurt (2017), al Kunstmuseum St. Gallen (2013), al MNK Museum für Neue Kunst di Francoforte (2012), alla Malmö Konsthall (2005) e al Bergen Kunsthall (2003). L’artista è rappresentata dalla galleria Mehdi Chouakri di Berlino.
Jonathan Monk (Leicester, UK, 1969) vive e lavora a Berlino. Monk spesso si appropria di idee, opere e strategie di artisti concettuali e minimalisti degli anni Sessanta e Settanta. Con fotografie, sculture, video installazioni e performances le sue opere rielaborano e ricontestualizzano queste citazioni, spesso mescolando la storia personale di Monk e la cultura di una famiglia della working-class. Le reinterpretazioni da parte di Monk di opere di John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha e Sol LeWitt, tra gli altri, contestano il concetto di autenticità, paternità e valore nell’arte con umorismo ed arguzia. Numerose le mostre personali di Jonathan Monk, tra le tante segnaliamo: W139, Amsterdam; ArtPace, San Antonio; Palais de Tokyo, Parigi; CCA - Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow; Centre d'Art Contemporain, Neuchatel; Museum Kunst Palast, Dusseldorf; Institute of Contemporary Art, Londra e Kunstverein, Hannover. Le mostre collettive sono altrettanto numerose e comprendono la Biennale di Taipei, la Biennale di Berlino, la Biennale di Venezia, la Whitney Biennal, la Biennale di Praga e la Biennale di Panama. Nel 2012 Monk è stato premiato con il Prix du Quartier des Bains a Ginevra. Thursday February 8, 2024 Quartz Studio is pleased to present a special project conceived as a dialogue between Isabell Heimerdinger (Stuttgart, Germany, 1963) and Jonathan Monk (Leicester, UK, 1969). Heimerdinger and Monk, partners in life and art, reflect on Italy, starting from their experience in Rome several years ago to create an exhibition where their memories mingle with visions of grand tour travelers. A multitude of inspirations and techniques pile into the space: the Le Silence neon, Heimerdinger's mosaic diptych, and Monk's collection of boot-shaped wooden magnets, après Luciano Fabro (becoming a base for Heimerdinger's ceramic works). Themes of sacredness and irreverence, play and death are sparked by the powerful intersection of Heimerdinger and Monk's work in this two-person show at Quartz in Turin.
Isabell Heimerdinger (Stuttgart, Germany, 1963) lives and works in Berlin. The central theme of her work is the cinema and the condition of its production. In photographic, sculptural as well as cinematic works, she inquires the subtle differences between acted and authentic behavior, between role and identity. While the settings of her films are always real, the various characters keep their secrets well to themselves. In 2020, she received an award for her experimental short film SOON IT WILL BE DARK at the FIDMarseille International Film Festival. Since 2016, Heimerdinger has also been running a ceramics studio in which she explores the tightrope walk between functional ceramics and art. Her works have been shown in solo shows at the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin (2016), MNK Museum für Neue Kunst, Karlsruhe (2008), Western Front, Vancouver (2007), Swiss Institute, New York (2003) und FRAC Fonds régional d’art contemporain Pays de la Loire, Nantes (2000). Jonathan Monk (Leicester, UK, 1969) lives and works in Berlin. Monk often appropriates ideas, works, and strategies from Conceptualist and Minimalist artists of the ’60s and ’70s. With photographs, sculpture, film, installation, and performance, his works recontextualize and rework these quotations, often infusing them with Monk’s personal history and working-class family upbringing. These aspects add a humanizing and down-to-earth sensibility to the original works’ utopian ideals and notions of artistic genius. Monk’s reinterpretations of seminal works by John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, and Sol LeWitt, among others, challenge authenticity, authorship, and value in art with quirky humor and wit. Monk’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout the world, including in solo shows at CAC Malagá, W139 in Amsterdam, Artpace in San Antonio, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Tramway in Glasgow, Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow, Centre d’Art Contemporain in Neuchatel, Museum Kunst Palast in Dusseldorf, Institute of Contemporary Art in London, and Kunstverein Hannover. Group exhibitions are numerous and include the Taipei Biennial, Berlin Biennale, Venice Biennale, Whitney Biennial, Prague Biennale, and Panama Biennial. In 2012, Monk was honored with the Prix du Quartier des Bains in Geneva.
