Siamo felici di aprire la nuova stagione di O’ presentando a Milano in due giornate - 21 e 22 settembre 2015- il lavoro dell’artista newyorkese James Hoff, anche co-fondatore nel 2006, della casa editrice e label Primary Information.

Nel suo concerto lunedì 21 settembre alle ore 20.00 (puntuali) James utilizzerà un computer replicando e interagendo in tempo reale attraverso la tecnologia Live, a un attacco virale DDoS. Nel set-up performativo alcuni dispositivi che permettono di modificare ed intervenire dopo l’attivazione del virus, esplorando –per semplificare il processo- come la musica elettronica possa essere penetrata e modificata da virus (reali) digitali. L'uso di virus nella ricerca di James Hoff è come un linguaggio: consente di generare un contenuto in un modo diverso rispetto a quanto può essere pianificato o premeditato, e permette di lavorare muovendosi liberamente attraverso tutti i medium. Una struttura concettuale ma anche uno strumento di creazione in una varietà di generi e forme, quali pittura, scrittura, sound art e musica.

Martedì 22 settembre alle 18.30, una conversazione insieme a James Hoff presenta il lavoro di Primary Information, casa editrice, label ed organizzazione non profit co-fondata a New York nel 2006 dallo stesso Hoff e Miriam Katzeff. L’artista introduce il lavoro e la mission di Primary Information in relazione alla storia dei media nel contesto dell’editoria d’artista a partire dagli anni ‘60. Le scelte curatoriali, la direzione artistica di un progetto che produce, ripubblica e promuove libri, edizioni, scritti e documenti di valore storico per l’arte contemporanea, così come sostiene autori emergenti e altri progetti d’artista in forma editoriale (anche musicale). Autentiche meraviglie tra le quali la leggendaria rivista Avalanche (di Willoughby Sharp e Liza Béar, 1970-76), the Great Bear Pamphlet Series (di Dick Higgins per Something Else Press, 1965-67), How to Make an Happening di Allan Kaprow (una registrazione ed un Lp, 1965/66), Lee Lozano Notebooks (1967-70), DISBAND (registrazioni dalle performances tra 1979-82 del gruppo di performer femministe DISBAND: Ilona Granet, Donna Henes, Barbara Kruger, Ingrid Sischy, Diane Torr, and Martha Wilson).

James Hoff’s work encompasses painting, sound, writing, performance, and publishing among other media.
He has maintained a strong focus on distributed forms and experiments with language, including cross-disciplinary investigations that address orally-transmitted syndromes, computer viruses, and ear worms. Hoff is a co-founder of Primary Information, a non-profit arts organization devoted to publishing artists’ books and art historical documents. Recent exhibitions include Skywiper at Callicoon Fine Arts (NYC), The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Dog at Supportico Lopez (Berlin) and B=R=I=C=K=I=N=G at Contemporary Art Center (New Orleans). His latest record BLASTER came out on Pan in 2014. He lives and works in Brooklyn.

Primary Information is a non-profit organization devoted to printing artists’ books, artists’ writings, out-of-print publications and editions. Primary Information was formed in 2006 to foster intergenerational dialogue through the publication of artists’ books and writings by artists—emerging, mid-career, and established. The organization’s period of focus is from the early sixties to the present, with an emphasis on the conceptual practice of using publications as an exhibition space.
