Jeremy Deller – Sacrilege

In occasione della ventitreesima edizione di miart e dell’Art Week milanese, la Fondazione Nicola Trussardi presenta Sacrilege, una delle più famose installazioni del celebre artista inglese Jeremy Deller, a cura di Massimiliano Gioni.

Dal 12 al 15 aprile 2018, in occasione della ventitreesima edizione di miart e dell’Art Week milanese, la Fondazione Nicola Trussardi presenta Sacrilege, una delle più famose installazioni del celebre artista inglese Jeremy Deller, a cura di Massimiliano Gioni.

La Fondazione Nicola Trussardi ha invitato l’artista – già vincitore del Turner Prize nel 2004 – a collaborare per la prima volta con un’istituzione italiana per un progetto personale, portando nel cuore del parco delle sculture di CityLife il gigantesco gonfiabile che ricostruisce in scala 1:1 il sito archeologico di Stonehenge, uno dei luoghi fondanti dell’identità e della cultura britannica, dichiarato patrimonio dell’umanità dall’UNESCO nel 1986.

Jeremy Deller è una delle voci più anticonformiste del panorama artistico internazionale: ha esposto con mostre personali nei più importanti musei del mondo e ha preso parte alle maggiori kermesse internazionali, tra cui Skulptur Projekte di Münster, la Carnegie International di Pittsburg, Manifesta 5 a San Sebastian, la Biennale di Venezia, la Biennale del Whitney di New York e quelle di Berlino, Gwangju, Sydney, San Paolo, Lione, Mosca, Praga, Taipei. Nel 2013 ha rappresentato la Gran Bretagna alla 55. Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte della Biennale di Venezia.

Jeremy Deller è un “istigatore di interventi sociali”, come lui stesso si definisce, o, per dirla con le parole del critico Mark Brown, un "pifferaio magico della cultura popolare". Le sue opere infatti sono spesso caratterizzate dalla partecipazione del pubblico: le sue sculture sono esperienze sociali nelle quali performance, video e installazioni sono utilizzate come luoghi di scambio e aggregazione. Alla base del suo lavoro c’è un fortissimo interesse per gli eventi storici, per la cultura popolare e le manifestazioni del folklore e della cultura di massa, ambiti che l’artista scandaglia con il rigore scientifico dell’antropologo e la febbrile passione del fan sfegatato di un gruppo rock. Con l'entusiasmo del bricoleur e la curiosità dell'autodidatta, Deller dà vita a progetti che mischiano oggetti ed eventi tra realtà e rappresentazione, storia e fiction, ricostruzione filologica e paradosso.

Nasce così anche Sacrilege, l’imponente installazione che verrà presentata a Milano dalla Fondazione Nicola Trussardi. Creata originariamente per il Festival Internazionale di Arti Visive di Glasgow e successivamente esposta a Londra in occasione delle Olimpiadi del 2012, l’opera è stata portata in questi anni a Madrid, Parigi, Sydney e Hong Kong, diventando un’icona globale dell’arte contemporanea. Con il senso dell’umorismo che contraddistingue molti dei suoi progetti, Deller trasforma il monumento di Stonehenge in un gigantesco gioco gonfiabile per bambini, riproducendolo in plastica e facendolo diventare un’attrazione da luna park di 35 metri di diametro: il pubblico è chiamato a interagire con l’installazione, a salirci sopra, saltare e giocare al suo interno.

Sacrilege di Jeremy Deller fa parte di una serie di incursioni realizzate dal 2013 dalla Fondazione Nicola Trussardi in occasione di miart, la fiera internazionale d’arte moderna e contemporanea di Milano: una serie di progetti speciali, mostre temporanee, performance e interventi pop-up che hanno portato a Milano artisti internazionali tra cui Darren Bader, Gelitin, Sarah Lucas e Stan VanDerBeek.
La Fondazione Nicola Trussardi continua così il percorso intrapreso nel 2003 con la Presidenza di Beatrice Trussardi e la Direzione Artistica di Massimiliano Gioni, portando l’arte contemporanea nel cuore della città di Milano, riscoprendo e valorizzando luoghi dimenticati o insoliti. Dopo importanti mostre personali tra cui quelle di Allora & Calzadilla, Pawel Althamer, Maurizio Cattelan, Tacita Dean, Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset, Urs Fischer, Peter Fischli e David Weiss, Paul McCarthy, Paola Pivi, Pipilotti Rist, Anri Sala e Tino Sehgal e le due grandi mostre a tema La Grande Madre (2015) e La Terra Inquieta (2017), Beatrice Trussardi e Massimiliano Gioni sono ora orgogliosi di presentare questa grande installazione di Jeremy Deller, nel quindicesimo anno di attività nomade della Fondazione Nicola Trussardi.

L'installazione Sacrilege è stata originariamente commissionata dal Sindaco di Londra e dal Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art per il London 2012 Festival. La presentazione a Milano, nell'ambito di miart 2018 e dell'Art Week milanese, è un progetto ideato e sostenuto dalla Fondazione Nicola Trussardi in collaborazione con CityLife, società del Gruppo Generali che gestisce l’area dove verrà posizionata temporaneamente l’installazione.
Il Parco di CityLife ospiterà inoltre le opere di ArtLine, progetto di arte pubblica del Comune di Milano: una collezione a cielo aperto che si svilupperà all'interno di questo nuovo distretto cittadino e il cui primo gruppo di opere verrà presentato il 15 aprile alle ore 12.

Sacrilege è un progetto promosso da Fondazione Nicola Trussardi in collaborazione con CityLife, società del Gruppo Generali, e la partnership tecnica di Gruppo Spinelli.

From April 12 to 15, 2018, on the occasion of the 23rd edition of miart and the Milanese Art Week, the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi presents Sacrilege, a major outdoor installation by the celebrated British artist Jeremy Deller, curated by Massimiliano Gioni.

The Fondazione Nicola Trussardi invited Deller – winner of the 2004 Turner Prize – to realize his first solo project in collaboration with an Italian institution. With Sacrilege, Deller brings to the heart of the CityLife sculpture park a giant inflatable installation that is a life-sized reconstruction of the archeological site of Stonehenge – a historic monument that is an icon of British culture and heritage, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.

Jeremy Deller is one of the most non-conformist voices in the international artistic landscape. He has held solo shows in some of the world’s most important museums and he has taken part in major international exhibitions, including the Skulptur Projekte in Münster, the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, Manifesta 5 in San Sebastian, the Venice Biennale, the Whitney Biennial in New York, and major biennials in Berlin, Gwangju, Sydney, San Paolo, Lyon, Moscow, Prague and Taipei. In 2013, he represented the UK in the British Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale.

Jeremy Deller defines himself as an “instigator of social interventions,” and in the words of critic Mark Brown, he is the “Pied Piper of popular culture.” His works are often characterized by audience participation: his sculptures are social experiences in which performances, videos, and installations become places of exchange and aggregation. Central to his work is an interest in historical events and their influence on popular culture and folkloric expressions, and the artist scrutinizes these fields with the scientific rigor of the anthropologist and the feverish passion of a die-hard rock fan. With the enthusiasm of a bricoleur and the curiosity of an autodidact, Deller gives life to projects that blend objects and events to create a space of experience that is suspended between reality and representation, history and fiction, philological reconstruction and paradox.

This was also the starting point for Sacrilege, the towering installation that will be presented in Milan by the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi. Originally created for the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, and later displayed in London on the occasion of the 2012 Olympics, over recent years, the work has been shown in Madrid, Paris, Sydney, and Hong Kong. With the sense of humor that characterizes many of his projects, Deller transforms the Stonehenge monument into a giant inflatable toy for children, reproducing it in plastic and turning it into a funfair attraction 35 meters in diameter; the public is thus called upon to interact with the installation, to climb onto it, and to jump and play within it.

Sacrilege by Jeremy Deller is part of a series of incursions which, since 2013, the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi has carried out on the occasion of miart, the international fair of modern and contemporary art of Milan: these consist of special projects, temporary shows, performances, and pop-up interventions that have brought to Milan international artists such as Darren Bader, Gelitin, Sarah Lucas, and Stan VanDerBeek.

The Fondazione Nicola Trussardi continues with this project the path began in 2003, with Beatrice Trussardi as President and Massimiliano Gioni as Artistic Director, bringing contemporary art in the heart of the city of Milan, rediscovering and valorizing forgotten or unusual places. After major solo shows by Allora & Calzadilla, Pawel Althamer, Maurizio Cattelan, Tacita Dean, Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset, Urs Fischer, Peter Fischli & David Weiss, Paul McCarthy, Paola Pivi, Pipilotti Rist, Anri Sala, and Tino Sehgal, as well as the two major thematic group shows, La Grande Madre (2015), and La Terra Inquieta (2017), Beatrice Trussardi and Massimiliano Gioni are now proud to present this major installation by Jeremy Deller, in the fifteenth year of nomadic activity driven by the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi.

The installation Sacrilege has been originally commissioned by The Mayor of London and Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art for the London 2012 Festival. Its presentation in Milan – in the framework of miart 2018 and the Milanese Art Week – is a project conceived and promoted by the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi in collaboration with CityLife, company managed by Generali Group that hands the area where the installation will be temporarily installed.
The CityLife Park will also host the artworks of ArtLine, a public art project of the City of Milan: an open-air collection that will develop within this new city district and whose first group of works will be presented on April 15 at noon.

Sacrilege is a project promoted by Fondazione Nicola Trussardi in collaboration with CityLife, company managed by Generali Group, and the technical partnership of Gruppo Spinelli.
