Thomas Brambilla Gallery is pleased to present Column Paintings, John Torreano’s first solo exhibition in Italy, which opens on Saturday, October 12th, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. The exhibition includes a series of wood column paintings, created exclusively for the show.
The series of columns paintings is the result of Torreano long research to surpass the flatness of the canvas and the idea of painting as a “container” in order to support the idea of a meaning determined by a multiplicity of points of view. In fact, the columns’ rounded surface protrude towards the observer in a 180-degree curve from the wall, allowing every person in the room to have an equal relationship with the painting and no hierarchical point of view. And, as Torreano would say “There are many stars. There are many gods” .
The exhibition is composed of a recent series of columns made of wood, paint, acrylic gems and studded with wooden balls, which are reminiscent of Native American totems. The gems symbolize potential wealth and specifically the jewels the first American colonizers used to trade with the indigenous population. But they could also refer to Torreanos’ Catholicity as he explained in a recent interview on Artforum […] Suddenly the inlaid gems in the columns could reference the syphilitic wounds of Christ, as in Matthias Grünewald's fourteenth-century Isenheim Altarpiece, and the sparkles from the gems were like vigil lights, and so on.[…] .
The almost Rococo style of the exposed works in Column Paintings challenge also the modernist dogma as essentialism, finally overcoming the classical boundaries thanks to a wide variety of unconventional materials (such as acrylic gems, jewels and wooden spheres). The result is a decorative work pushed to the extreme, so as not to be accidental, but rather clearly intended. Torreano’s columns share the same objective as Matisse's; surpassing the formal representation.
John Torreano (b.1941, Flint, MI) has exhibited his works extensively since the late 1960s including at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C, the Indianapolis Museum of Fine Arts and many others. He received his BFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art (1963), and his MFA from Ohio State University (1967) where he studied perception as it relates to painting with Hoyt L. Sherman and Robert King.

Thomas Brambilla Gallery è lieta di presentare Column Paintings, la prima mostra personale in Italia dell’artista americano John Torreano, che inaugurerà il 12 Ottobre alle h 18:30. La mostra include una serie di colonne lignee.
La serie dei Column Paintings è il risultato della lunga ricerca di Torreano per superare i limiti della pittura e della teoria di opera come "contenitore" di significati, al fine di sostenere l'idea di un linguaggio determinato da una molteplicità di punti di vista. Difatti, la superficie arrotondata delle colonne protende verso l'osservatore in una curva di 180 gradi dalla parete, consentendo ad ogni persona nella stanza di avere un rapporto uguale con il dipinto e nessun punto di vista gerarchico. Ogni spettatore diventa così autore, o come direbbe Torreano: “There are many stars. There are many gods”.
La mostra è composta da una recente serie di colonne lignee decorate con gemme acriliche, gioielli e sfere di legno. La forma allungata ed arrotondata richiama da subito gli antichi totem dei Nativi Americani mentre le gemme acriliche ricordano le pietre preziose utilizzate per commerciare dai colonizzatori con le popolazioni indigene. Potrebbero anche essere un richiamo alla fede cattolica dell’artista, come Torreano stesso ha spiegato in un’intervista su Artforum nel 2013 [...] le gemme intarsiate nelle colonne simboleggiano le ferite sifilitiche di Cristo nella pala d'altare di Matthias Grünewald ad Isenheim del Quattordicesimo secolo, ma sono anche un rimando inoltre le luci votive […] . Lo stile quasi rococò delle colonne di Torreano sfida inoltre il dogma modernista dell’essenzialismo, superandone i confini grazie all’utilizzo di una grande varietà di materiali non convenzionali (gemme acriliche, gioielli e sfere di legno) e risultando in una decorazione spinta tanto all'estremo da non essere casuale bensì volutamente intesa. Con la serie dei Column Paintings, l’artista americano condivide lo stesso obiettivo di Matisse; ovvero il superamento della rappresentazione formale.
John Torreano (1941, Flint, MI) ha esposto in alcune delle maggiori istituzioni museali; Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art in New York, Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C, Indianapolis Museum of Fine Arts.
