Ncontemporary is pleased to present "Trying to be a square but never being a square", the new solo show by Jonny Briggs. The exhibition features unpublished works flanked by already famous pieces of the artist’s production.

The exhibition itinerary starts with a new work, from which the entire show takes its title, within which we find a synthesis of some of the most important elements of the artist’s research over the last ten years. The prosthetic mask of the father’s face returns in this work, such as the symbolic use of the fluorescent pink color and, above all, the construction of a surreal image within a natural context. The series of four images, exhibited in the gallery’s project room, is physically staged in the woods; the artist’s body, as well as part of the nature, is painted in some of its parts, in order to investigate the relationship between inside and outside, between what is artificial and what is authentic.

Despite the rigorous formal symmetry of these works, observing them, we are sucked into a chasm that seems to shrink. The figure of the circle, directly recalled by the serial composition of Trying to be a square but never being a square, then continues as the leitmotif of the entire exhibition. The circle therefore as a representation of the continuity of time, but also a metaphor representing the human attempts to fit in, yet often failing.

Il percorso espositivo ha origine con un nuovo lavoro, da cui prende il titolo l’intera mostra, all’interno del quale troviamo una sintesi di alcuni dei più importanti elementi della ricerca dell’artista degli ultimi dieci anni. Ritorna in questa opera la maschera prostetica del volto del padre, ritorna l’utilizzo simbolico del colore rosa fluorescente ma, soprattutto, ritorna la costruzione di un’immagine surreale all’interno di un contesto naturale.

La serie di quattro immagini, esposta nella project room della galleria, è costruita fisicamente in un bosco; il corpo dell’artista così come parte della natura è dipinto in alcune sue porzioni in modo da indagare il rapporto tra interno ed esterno, tra ciò che è artefatto e ciò che è autentico. Nonostante la rigorosa simmetria formale di questi lavori, osservandoli, veniamo risucchiati da una voragine che pare restringersi.

La figura del cerchio, richiamata direttamente dalla composizione seriale di Trying to be a square but never being a square, continua poi come filo conduttore dell’intera mostra. Il cerchio quindi come rappresentazione della continuità del tempo, ma anche come metafora del tentativo di adattarsi alla società senza successo.
