Chapter Xll of Journal presents two interviews by Linda Fregni Nagler in which she deepens her research on the photographic medium and its history. A practice that intertwines the characteristics of her work - those of the scholar and collector.

She articulates her work by patiently collecting and archiving. Years of research and acquisitions have allowed her to create a vast collection of vintage photographs depicting Japan, taken between the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. After a path of meticulous selection and collection, the photographs come together to be reworked and reactivated thus taking on new meanings.

In the first video the artist talks about The Hidden Mother, realized for the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013, about a series of work focusing on the mother figure. In the second, she talks about the series dedicated to the photography of the “School of Yokohama”, and presented for the first time at her solo show at Vistamare, Pescara in 2018.

Linda Fregni Nagler (1976, Stockholm, Sweden) lives and works in Milan. Her work has been presented in many museum and is included in major public and private collections.

Il capitolo Xll di Journal presenta due interviste di Linda Fregni Nagler in cui si approfondisce la sua ricerca sul medium fotografico e la sua storia. Una pratica che intreccia le caratteristiche del lavoro dell’artista, quelle dello studioso e del collezionista.

L’artista articola il suo lavoro partendo da una lunga e paziente attività di raccolta e archiviazione. Anni di ricerche e acquisizioni le hanno permesso di creare una vasta collezione di fotografie vintage che raffigurano il Giappone, scattate tra la metà dell’Ottocento e l’inizio del Novecento. Dopo un percorso di scelta e raccolta meticolose, le fotografie confluiscono per essere rielaborate e riattivate assumendo così nuovi significati.

Nel primo video l’artista parla del progetto The Hidden Mother, ideato per la 55 Biennale di Venezia nel 2013, che si focalizza su un gruppo di opere che hanno come tema la madre. Nel secondo, parla della serie Hana to Yama, dedicata alla fotografia della “Scuola di Yokohama” e presentata per la prima volta alla sua personale da Vistamare, Pescara nel 2018.

Linda Fregni Nagler (1976, Stoccolma, Svezia) vive e lavora a Milano. Il suo lavoro è stato presentato nei musei di tutto il mondo ed è presente nelle principali collezioni pubbliche e private.
