Chapter Xl of Journal presents three interviews by American conceptual artist Tom Friedman focusing on his uniquely eccentric approach. Friedman belongs to the generation of artists that, at the beginning of the 1990s, started to focus their attention on objects, reacting against the elimination of the physical element and tactile values by Pop art in favor of the image. He works in a variety of mediums including, sculpture, painting, drawing, video, and installation.

At the starting point of his research is a combination of the use of everyday materials and objects, such as styrofoam, pencils, paper, spaghetti and plastic cups, and the search of the relationship between the making of art and the psychology of our perception of art. Like a scientist studying empirical and non-empirical phenomena and an object’s infinite references, Friedman analyses its imperceptible transformations.

The three videos were shoot, respectively, in 2009 at the Contemporary Art Museum of Saint Louis, in 2013 at the artist’s studio and, at last, for his solo show at the Tel Aviv Museum in 2014.

Tom Friedman (1965, Saint Louis, Missouri, USA) lives and works in Massachusetts. His work has been internationally exhibited in galleries and museums and is included in prestigious collections worldwide.

Il capitolo Xl di Journal presenta tre talks dell’artista concettuale americano Tom Friedman in cui racconta del suo approccio unico ed eccentrico all’arte. Friedman appartiene a quella generazione di artisti che all’inizio degli anni Novanta volge la propria attenzione agli oggetti, reagendo all’azzeramento fisico e tattile condotto dalla Pop art a favore dell’immagine. Il suo lavoro include la scultura, la pittura, il disegno, il video e le installazioni.

La sua ricerca parte dall’utilizzo di materiali e oggetti del quotidiano, come polistirolo espanso, matite, carta, spaghetti e bicchieri di plastica, investigando la relazione tra il fare arte e la psicologia della percezione dell’arte. Come uno scienziato impegnato nello studio di fenomeni empirici e non delle infinite referenze di un oggetto, ne analizza le impercettibili trasformazioni.

I video sono stati registrati, rispettivamente, nel 2009 al Contemporary Art Museum di Sain Louis, nel 2013 nel suo studio e, infine, per la sua personale al Museo di Tel Aviv nel 2014.

Tom Friedman (1965, Saint Louis, Missouri, USA) vive e lavora in Massachusetts. Il suo lavoro è stato presentato nei musei di tutto il mondo ed è presente nelle principali collezioni pubbliche e private.
