French-Dominican artist and photographer Karla Hiraldo Voleau investigates notions of intimacy, love and gender representation, combining (auto-) fictional and non-fictional elements between photographic and written storytelling. In the series Another Love Story (2022), the artist retraces and rewrites her relationship with a man after his affair with another woman is discovered. The man’s name is never mentioned and personal references are never made explicit throughout the project. A couple hundred smartphone photographs re-stage intimate pictures taken during the time of their one-year relationship. The printed images are presented in the show on 13 panels, interspersed with the transcript of a disconcerting phone conversation between the artist and « the other woman », who is herself unaware of the man’s double relationship. It is precisely during this exchange that the secret is revealed. All portraits from the private memories collection of Hiraldo Voleau’s photo-library were reenacted by the artist herself together with a professional actor, chosen for his resemblance with her then partner. All shots were taken in the same locations as the original pictures. Every panel on show presents images taken in each of the 13 months of the relationship: from the initial closeness and sensuality of the couple, the narrative shifts to their progressive distancing at the end of the series. By rephotographing these everyday moments, the artist gives a form to her own memory: the therapeutic staging of the pictures turns into a self-empowering act that allows her to regain control over the past. Hiraldo Voleau questions the truthfulness of the photographic document by juxtaposing reenacted pictures to original ones, blending fiction and reality. The artist choses to print out ephemeral digital images and turn the story public, re-appropriating her emotional sphere while addressing couple-politics and contributing to the discourse around the potential of smartphone-photography as an artistic medium. The relevance of the project lies in Hiraldo Voleau’s faithful recounting of the romance’s end. By thematizing personal trauma and its processing, she manages to depict a difficult emotional state by using the medium of photography in a performative way. Karla Hiraldo Voleau uses smartphone photographs because they are part of our daily life recording. Her approach is not vindictive. Rather, it offers an intimate insight through her gaze and tells a story of sorority, showing how such painful an experience can become constructive.

Nella serie Another Love Story (2022), l'artista ripercorre e reinterpreta la sua relazione con un uomo, dopo la scoperta della sua relazione con un'altra donna. Il nome e i riferimenti personali dell’ex partner non sono mai esplicitati nel progetto. Alcune centinaia di fotografie scattate con lo smartphone rimettono in scena immagini intime scattate durante il periodo della loro relazione durata un anno. Le immagini sono presentate su 13 pannelli all'interno della mostra, alternate alla trascrizione di una sconcertante conversazione telefonica tra l'artista e "l'altra donna", anch'essa all'oscuro della doppia relazione dell'uomo. È proprio durante questa telefonata che la storia venne alla luce. Tutti i ritratti provenienti dalla collezione di ricordi privati della biblioteca fotografica di Hiraldo Voleau sono stati ricreati dall'artista stessa insieme a un attore professionista, scelto per assomigliare al suo partner dell'epoca, e scattati negli stessi luoghi delle immagini originali. Ogni pannello in mostra presenta fotografie scattate in ciascuno dei 13 mesi della relazione: partendo da un'iniziale vicinanza e sensualità della coppia, la narrazione si evolve fino al loro progressivo allontanamento verso la fine della serie. Ri-fotografando questi momenti di vita quotidiana, l'artista dà forma alla sua stessa memoria: la messa in scena terapeutica delle immagini si trasforma in un atto di auto-emancipazione che le permette di riprendere il controllo sul passato. Hiraldo Voleau mette in discussione la veridicità del documento fotografico, accostando immagini ricreate a quelle originali, mescolando finzione e realtà. L'artista sceglie di stampare immagini digitali effimere e di manifestare la storia in pubblico, riappropriandosi della propria sfera emotiva, affrontando la tematica della politica di coppia e contribuendo al discorso sul potenziale fotografico degli smartphone come mezzo artistico. La rilevanza del progetto risiede nella suo fedele racconto della fine della storia d'amore, trattando il trauma personale e la sua elaborazione e riuscendo, inoltre, a rappresentare uno stato emotivo delicato utilizzando il mezzo fotografico in maniera performativa. Karla Hiraldo Voleau utilizza le foto scattate con lo smartphone perché fanno parte del nostro modo quotidiano di tenere traccia della nostra vita. Il suo approccio non è vendicativo, piuttosto ci offre una visione intima attraverso il suo sguardo e racconta una storia di sorellanza tra donne, mostrando come un'esperienza dolorosa possa essere gestita in modo costruttivo.

Die französisch-dominikanische Künstlerin und Fotografin Karla Hiraldo Voleau untersucht Begriffe wie Intimität, Liebe und Geschlechterdarstellung, indem sie (selbst-) fiktive und realitätsbezogene Elemente zwischen fotografischen und schriftlichen Erzählungen kombiniert. In der Serie Another Love Story (2022) verfolgt die Künstlerin ihre Beziehung zu einem Mann zurück und umschreibt sie neu, nachdem seine Affäre mit einer anderen Frau aufgedeckt wurde. Sein Name sowie persönliche Bezüge werden in dem Projekt nie explizit genannt. Einige hundert Smartphone-Fotos reinszenieren intime Bilder aus der Zeit ihrer einjährigen Beziehung. Die gedruckten Bilder werden auf 13 Tafeln in der Ausstellung präsentiert, abwechselnd mit der Niederschrift eines erschütternden Telefongesprächs zwischen der Künstlerin und "der anderen Frau", die ebenfalls nichts von der Doppelbeziehung des Mannes wusste. Während dieses Gesprächs wurde die Geschichte aufgedeckt. Alle Porträts, die aus der Sammlung privater Erinnerungen aus Hiraldo Voleaus Fotobibliothek stammen, wurden von der Künstlerin selbst zusammen mit einem professionellen Schauspieler, der ihrem damaligen Partner äußerlich ähnelt, nachgestellt und an denselben Orten der Originalbilder noch einmal aufgenommen. Jede der ausgestellten Tafeln stellt Aufnahmen dar, die in jedem der 13 Monate der Beziehung entstanden sind: Ausgehend von der anfänglichen Nähe und Sinnlichkeit des Paares entwickelt sich die Erzählung bis zu ihrer zunehmenden Distanzierung am Ende dieser Serie. Indem die Künstlerin diese alltäglichen Momente neu fotografiert, gibt sie ihrer eigenen Erinnerung eine Form: Die therapeutische Inszenierung der Bilder wird zu einem Akt der Selbstermächtigung, der sie die Kontrolle über die Vergangenheit zurückgewinnen lässt. Hiraldo Voleau stellt den Wahrheitsgehalt des fotografischen Dokuments in Frage, indem sie nachgestellte Bilder den Originalen gegenüberstellt und dabei Fiktion und Realität vermischt. Die Künstlerin entscheidet sich dafür, flüchtige digitale Bilder auszudrucken und die Geschichte in der Öffentlichkeit zu manifestieren, während sie sich ihre emotionale Sphäre wieder aneignet. Dabei spricht sie die Paar-Politik an und trägt zum Diskurs über das Potenzial der Smartphone-Fotografie als künstlerisches Medium bei. Die Relevanz des Projekts liegt darin, dass Hiraldo Voleau das Ende der Liebesgeschichte wahrheitsgetreu wiedergibt, indem sie ein persönliches Trauma und dessen Verarbeitung thematisiert und es schafft, einen schwierigen emotionalen Zustand durch den Einsatz des fotografischen Mediums auf performative Weise darzustellen. Ihre Haltung ist nicht rachsüchtig, sondern bietet uns vielmehr einen Einblick in ihre Wahrnehmung und erzählt eine Geschichte der Schwesternschaft, die zeigt, wie eine solch schmerzhafte Erfahrung auf konstruktive Art und Weise verarbeitet werden kann.
