Raffaella Cortese è lieta di presentare la prima personale in Italia di Keren Cytter (Tel Aviv, 1977) artista video apprezzata da pubblico e critica per il modo innovativo di raccontare relazioni interpersonali di carattere conflittuale. Mettendo in crisi i convenzionali schemi del linguaggio cinematografico e giocando con toni tragi-comici e molteplici piani narrativi, l’artista spiazza e al contempo affascina lo spettatore invitandolo a osservare una rappresentazione esistenzialista e onirica di spaccati di vita quotidiana. Viene in mente il teatro dell’assurdo di Ionesco, ma rivisitato in chiave Indie, il naturalismo di Caravaggio, in bilico tra l’incanto adolescenziale di Wes Anderson e la filmografia solenne ed esplicita di Gus Van Sant. Oltre ad essere un artista video, Keren Cytter realizza disegni e al suo attivo ha tre romanzi e due piece teatrali. In Italia ha partecipato a Manifesta 7 nel 2008 e alla Biennale di Venezia nel 2009.

L’opera Avalanche è composta di quattro video Ducks and Women, Francophile, Lonely Planet e Chain Review è si presenta come un percorso, a tratti fisico, per il visitatore che si trova ad orientarsi all’interno di una narrazione surreale. Come in altri suoi lavori, l’artista-regista oscilla in un mondo fatto di letteratura e poesia, strumenti che l’autore usa per affrontare situazioni ed eventi traumatici e l’incalzante torcersi della psiche umana, un’invocazione che richiama a sé il corpo spezzato della natura, un tempo vigorosa, e che ora sembra confinarci senza vie di scampo a una vita d’appartamento. I video di cui si compone Avalanche sono ambientati tra Londra e Berlino, utilizzando l’Inglese, il Francese e il Tedesco come lingue correnti. La trama delle diverse storie è legata da personaggi e oggetti ricorrenti, come la ragazza che mangia la mela o la strobosfera tipica delle discoteche.

Konstrukion è nato dall’esperienza di Keren Cytter alla Mai Thai University, una “innovativa scuola di poesia” con sede a Berlino, che rilascia attestati ufficiali. Sullo sfondo di un bar di quart’ordine i futuri poeti partecipano a una maratona di poesia lunga 48 ore. I partecipanti vivono, per la durata della maratona, in totale stile bohemien fatto di posie, bevute e sostanze stupefacenti. La sofisticata struttura narrativa con ritmo accattivante e sfaccettato trasforma il testo poetico in conversazioni frammentate e a sua volta in azioni di forte impatto emotivo.

Keren Cytter (b. 1977, Tel Aviv), è stata invitata a presentare i suoi video in numerose mostre collettive e personali in importanti spazi e istituzioni pubbliche in Europa e Negli Stati Uniti tra cui Le Plateau, Parigi; Kunsthaus Baselland, Basilea; X Initiative, New York ; CCA Center for Contemporary Art, Kitakyushu; Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna; Moderna Museet, Stoccolma; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlino; New Museum, New York and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. Nel 2006 ha vinto il premio the Baloise Art Prize alla fiera Art Basel.

Raffaella Cortese is proud to present the first Italian solo exhibition of Israeli artist Keren Cytter (b. 1977). Cytter has been critically and popularly acclaimed for her innovative way of narrating conflictual relationships. The artist breaks down the conventions of cinematic language by using tragicomical overtones and multiple story lines that constantly manage to surprise the spectator with an existentialist, dream-like representation of daily life. A hypsterish theatre de l'absurd, Cytter's videos are at once reminiscent of Ionesco' plays and Caravaggio's naturalism, vacillating between Wes Andersonian juvenilia and Gus Van Sant's solemn explicitness. An artist as well as a writer, Cytter has published three novels and three theater plays. She was included in Manifesta 7 in 2008 and in the 53rd Biennale di Venezia in 2009.

Cytter's Avalanche is an installation of four videos respectively titled "Ducks and Women", "Francophile", "Lonely Planet" and "Chain Review". The artist sets up an interactive as well as physical experience for the viewer to move through, who is also called upon to make sense of the surreality of the narration. As in other works, the artist/auteur wallows in the world of literature and poetry as means to deal with trauma and with mounting mental intricacies, invoking the dismember forces of nature from an apparently apartment-confined life. The videos are set in London and Berlin, with bits of spoken conversation in English, French and in German. The plots are linked to one another by returning characters and recurring visual cues.

Konstruktion came out of Cytter's own experience at Mai Thai University, a degree-conferring, "innovative school of poetry" based in Berlin. A 48 hour poetry reading is taking place amongst the degree candidates in a filthy bar setting. The participants seem to share an understanding of daily life as an extension of poetry in which heavy drinking and drug-taking reconcile with bohemian lifestyle. A sophisticatedly structured, gaze-deflecting, fast-pace sequence Konstruktion is able to reconcile poetic text with spoken bits of converatiosn, erratic actions and crashing human affects.

Keren Cytter’s work has been presented in group and solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in Europe and the United States, including the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; New Museum, New York and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. In 2006 she was awarded the Baloise Art Prize at Art Basel. Cytter lives and works between Berlin.
