Leonid Tsvetkov – Disturbances

Disturbances è la naturale evoluzione dell’opera Everyday Downfall che l’artista ha realizzato durante la residenza presso l’American Academy di Roma, presentata al pubblico nel febbraio del 2013.
Everyday Downfall è frutto dell’interesse che Tsvetkov nutre verso il reperto archeologico come espressione di usi e costumi del passato e, soprattutto, come chiave di lettura di ciò che oggi può potenzialmente divenire un reperto per gli archeologi del futuro.

Venerdì21 marzo 2014 la Galleria Ex Elettrofonica inaugura Disturbances, un progetto inedito di Leonid Tsvetkov, a cura di Manuela Pacella.
Disturbances è la naturale evoluzione dell’opera Everyday Downfall che l’artista ha realizzato durante la residenza presso l’American Academy di Roma, presentata al pubblico nel febbraio del 2013.
Everyday Downfall è frutto dell’interesse che Tsvetkov nutre verso il reperto archeologico come espressione di usi e costumi del passato e, soprattutto, come chiave di lettura di ciò che oggi può potenzialmente divenire un reperto per gli archeologi del futuro. L’ispirazione di base è Monte Testaccio, luogo dallo stesso artista definito come “un paesaggio di rifiuti”. L’aspetto fascinoso di Monte Testaccio non risiede solamente nel fatto che il sito è costituito da cocci di anfore del II e III secolo dopo Cristo provenienti dalla Spagna, ma che oggi questa discarica del passato sia ritenuta di alto valore estetico – oltre che conoscitivo. Partendo da questo presupposto l’artista ha cominciato a collezionare materiali di scarto del mondo odierno, prevalentemente imballaggi di prodotti di consumo. I calchi in cemento di questi contenitori (di varie forme e dimensioni) sono stati poi esposti sul pavimento dell’atrio dell’American Academy, in stretto colloquio con i reperti archeologici lì presenti, formando un ideale paesaggio urbano. A mostra terminata Tsvetkov ha “abbandonato” i calchi nelle zone archeologiche di Roma e dintorni.
Per Ex Elettrofonica l’artista ha ideato un’installazione che taglia lo spazio verticalmente attraverso l’inserimento di gruppi di colonne di varie dimensioni e altezze, realizzate sovrapponendo calchi in cemento dei più diversi scarti industriali. Questi tagli verticali costringono il visitatore a percorrere l’ambiente in maniera consapevole e ad osservare le colonne come prodotti artistici realizzati con tutto ciò che normalmente non guardiamo e buttiamo via.
Oltre all’installazione l’artista espone alcune delle carte realizzate a Roma tra il 2012 e il 2013. Si tratta di stampe con testi o immagini raffiguranti piantine e rilievi architettonici di luoghi come il Vaticano, in seguito sottoposte a processi di elettrolisi. Attraverso questo processo l’artista rende illeggibile la carta originaria dando luoghi a nuovi paesaggi. Questa serie di lavori conferma la modalità operativa di Tsvetkov che ama intervenire sui materiali quel tanto che basta affinché essi rivelino processi chimici o naturali già esistenti.

La mostra è realizzata in collaborazione con AlbumArte | Progetti per l’arte contemporanea, che ha accolto l’artista all’interno del suo programma di studio residency 2014.

On Friday March 21st 2014, the Ex Elettrofonica Gallery will present Disturbances, an unseen project by Leonid Tsvetkov, curated by Manuela Pacella.
Disturbances is the natural evolution of Everyday Downfall, the work realized by the artist during his period of residency at the American Academy in Rome, presented to the public in February 2013.
Everyday Downfall began from the interest that Tsvetkov has always had in the archaeological find as a material expression of habits and customs of the past and, above all, as a key to reading what today might potentially remain and become finds for archaeologists of the future. The primary inspiration was Monte Testaccio, a place the artist described as “a landscape of garbage”. The fascinating aspect of Monte Testaccio lies not only in the fact that it is made up of amphora fragments from the second and third centuries AD that originated from Spain, but that today this dump is held to have a high aesthetic – as well as archaeological – value.
Starting from this premise, the artist began collecting scrap materials of daily life, especially food packaging. Concrete moulds of these containers (of various shapes and sizes) were then displayed on the ground of the atrium of the American Academy, in close dialogue with the archaeological finds kept there and creating an ideal urban landscape. After the exhibition, Tsvetkov continued his project by “abandoning” these moulds in all the archaeological areas of Rome and its environs.
For Ex Elettrofonica the artist has devised an installation that will cut the gallery space vertically, through the insertion of groups of columns of various dimensions and heights, created by placing the concrete moulds of the most disparate industrial scraps one on top of another. These vertical incisions force the visitor to walk the exhibition space in a conscious way and to observe the columns as artistic productions made with what normally we don’t look at but throw away.
As well as the installation, Tsvetkov will display some of the works on paper that he made in Rome between 2012 and 2013, whose basis consisted of floor plans and architectural reliefs of places like the Vatican, submitted then to a process of electroplating. Through this process the artist renders the original paper no longer legible and creates new landscapes. This series of works confirms the modus operandi of Tsvetkov, who likes to operate on his materials just enough so that they can reveal already existing chemical or natural processes.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with AlbumArte | Projects for contemporary art, which hosted the artist within the studio residency program 2014.
