‘Beauty and Sadness’ è la prima personale italiana dell’artista inglese Lindsey Bull, di ritorno a Yellow dopo la collettiva ‘Let There Be Light’, con una nuova serie di opere a olio e ad acquarello. Protagonisti della sua pittura, sono uomini e donne, sorpresi nella loro intimità esistenziale. Essi, infatti, sono colti nella bellezza e misteriosità del loro esistere, in uno spazio indefinito e profondo, dove occasionalmente scintillano presenze di questo o quell’altro mondo. Pennellate luminose fanno breccia nello sfondo denso e buio, portando in vita chiome, rami rigogliosi di foreste animate e fruscio di abiti. Pensieri sconosciuti riverberano nostalgici sulle guance, sulle fronti e sulle palpebre. Contrariamente, tinte pastello e gesti ariosi incorniciano ritratti dai volti scuri e intensi. Ne risulta un’incisiva contrapposizione tra leggerezza e gravità, chiarezza e oscurità, bellezza e tristezza. I personaggi di Bull sembrano trascendere il mondo che conosciamo, abitandone uno fatto di concentrazione: ognuno di loro è sorpreso nella fissità di un istante, coinvolto nella contemplazione di qualcosa oltre la nostra comprensione, avvolto da una magica e insolita aura o scoperto nel bisbiglio di un segreto che non si può udire. I loro sguardi mistici proseguono lontani e accendono una luce che illumina una malinconia intima e silente. Le figure nei quadri di Bull sono presenze che guardano e si fanno guardare, così umane e così soprannaturali, punctum di una dimensione psicologica e spirituale mai esauribile. Lindsey Bull, in ‘Beauty and Sadness’, continua a suscitare atmosfere familiari e insolite allo stesso tempo, cariche di tensione e interrogativi, dando vita a un mondo fatto di bellezza, luci, ombre e incertezza, invitando lo spettatore a un atteggiamento di rinnovata domanda.
‘Beauty and Sadness’ is the first solo show in Italy by English artist Lindsey Bull, who returns to Yellow with a new series of paintings. The world which takes shape through this exhibition is inhabited by figures discovered in an existential intimacy. They are indeed caught in the beauty and mystery of their existence, emerging from an undefined deep space, which sparkles of worldly and otherworldly echoes. Glowing brushstrokes make inroads through the dense and gloomy backgrounds, bringing to life foliage, branches of lush vegetation and rustling of clothes. Unspeakable nostalgic thoughts reverberate on the cheeks, the foreheads and the eyelids. Conversely, airy gestures and pastel tints enclose these portraits in which a darker quality is aroused around the head of the figure. The result is a delicate balance and an incisive contrast between lightness and weight, clarity and obscurity, beauty and sadness. Lindsey Bull is particularly fascinated by the mystery of rituals and the performative body. The characters painted for ‘Beauty and Sadness’ seem to transcend the world we know, inhabiting a concentrated world: each of them is surprised in the stillness of a moment in time, engaged in the contemplation of something beyond our comprehension, wrapped up in a magical and unusual aura or, again, discovered in the whispering of a secret that cannot be heard. Their mystic gaze continues far, drawing a light that illuminates an intimate and silent melancholy. The figures in the paintings of Bull are presences that watch and are watched. They are so human and yet supernatural, punctum for a psychological and a spiritual dimension that can never burn out. Through her work, she continues to raise a familiar and unreal atmosphere at the same time, full of tension and queries. ‘Beauty and Sadness’ creates a world of strange beauty, lights, shadows and uncertainty, dragging the viewer into a renewed interrogative disposition.

Lindsey Bull nasce a Hereford nel 1979. Studia presso la Manchester School of Art 1999 – 2001, successivamente consegue un Postgraduate Diploma e un Master in Fine Art presso il Chelsea College of Art and Design di Londra nel 2009. Ha vinto il Brenda Landon Pye Prize 2009 e nel 2011 è stata beneficiaria del prestigioso Red Mansion Prize, a cui ha fatto seguito una residenza in Cina. Nel 2011 Lindsey ha vinto il Motorcade/FlashParade National Open ed è stata selezionata per il Griffin Art Prize l’anno successivo. Ha partecipato a numerose mostre nazionali e internazionali, più recentemente il suo lavoro è stato esposto nella collettiva Oculist Witnesses, Harris Museum, Preston, 2015; Ouija, Bloc Projects, Sheffield, 2014; L'Heure des Socières, Centre d'art Contemprain de Quimper, France, 2014; Masques, Galerie d'YS, Brussels & Transition gallery, London, 2014; Rituals are Tellers of Us; Newlyn Art Gallery, Newlyn, 2013; Creekside Open (Selected by Paul Noble), APT gallery, London 2013, Heavens to Murgatroyd! Lindsey Bull was born in Hereford 1979. She studied at Manchester School of Art 1999-2001 before completing a postgraduate diploma and MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London in 2009. After graduating Lindsey was awarded the Brenda Landon Pye Prize 2009 and was the 2011 recipient of the prestigious Red Mansion Prize undertaking a painting residency in China. In 2011 Lindsey was a further prize winner at the Motorcade/FlashParade National Open, and was shortlisted for the Griffin Art Prize the following year. She has exhibited widely, most recently showing work in the group exhibitions Oculist Witnesses, Harris Museum, Preston, 2015; Ouija, Bloc Projects, Sheffield, 2014; L'Heure des Socières, Centre d'art Contemprain de Quimper, France, 2014; Masques, Galerie d'YS, Brussels & Transition gallery, London, 2014; Rituals are Tellers of Us; Newlyn Art Gallery, Newlyn, 2013; Creekside pen (Selected by Paul Noble), APT gallery, ondon 2013 and Heavens to Murgatroyd!
