Littlewhitehead – The dangerous fantasist

Littlewhitehead is the artistic persona of Craig Little (b. 1980, Glasgow) and Blake Whitehead (b. 1985, Lanark). In 2012 they created the fictional being the Overman, a bearded middle aged man with the torso of a child. The absurd combination makes reference to and undermines Friedrich Nietzsche’s theory of the Ubermensch. Nietzsche’s Ubermensch is seen as a cynical and inflated version of man without any illusions, for whom god is dead and who substitutes his own will for belief in god in order to make sense of the world. Along with reference to the ironic, pseudo-anthropological short film The Perfect Humam by Danish filmmaker Jorgen Leth and to Virtruvius’s notes on the ideal human proportions, the Overman satirises the idea of human perfection.

Littlewhitehead decided to create the fictitious man by emulating the tactics of the age: the twenty-first century is a time when people create heightened versions of their own identity for consumption through social media. This in turn creates an ethereal, digital space filled entirely with undead idealised identities. Not only is the Overman an actual undead identity, he also exists in this ethereal digital space, as central to his being is his diary, a series of absurd notes, drawings and stories that are published intermittently on his online blog. His shared experiences and musings often express certain ontological anxieties and existential absurdities. Thus the Overman allows littlewhitehead to play in an area between reality and unreality, to express their own fears and anxieties whilst also commenting on contemporary culture.

Littlewhitehead è il duo artistico rappresentato da Craig Little (n. 1980, Glasgow) e Blake Whitehead (n. 1985, Lanark). Il duo artistico è legato a una figura umana denominata Overman, creata nel 2012, ovvero un uomo seminudo con un viso molto curato e barbuto e un dorso infantile, elementi anatomici fra loro in netto contrasto.

Quest’opera rispecchia la società in cui viviamo, nella quale grazie anche all’avvento della tecnologia e dei social network l’uomo ha una visione di se stesso ingigantita e digitale.

L’arte di Littlewhitehead si esprime attraverso la finzione per far riflettere sulla realtà.

L’Overman permette di far vivere agli artisti una realtà immaginaria e parallela alla loro vita, è un nuovo simbolo di maschilità che può essere paragonato all’Ubermensch di Nietzsche in una versione cinica ed esasperata, presentata come l’essenza di un uomo senza particolari illusioni, senza un Dio che lo rappresenti; l’Overman ha anche delle assonanze in chiave ironica con il cortometraggio The Human del regista danese Jorgen Leth o, sempre parlando ironicamente, gli artisti citano Vitruvio e la sua idea di forma umana.

L’Overman è una sorta di musa ispiratrice per i Littlewhitehead. Overman racconta la sua storia attraverso un diario on-line aggiornato dagli stessi artisti, correlato di disegni e di riflessioni assurde; queste riflessioni apparentemente senza senso in realtà rappresentano il filo conduttore dell’operare del duo artistico: l’assurdità è la matrice fondamentale per la costruzione delle loro opere d’arte, l’idea di creare una propria società con regole inventate dalla loro stessa fantasia produce una sorta di contrasto fra il reale e l’irreale.
