Thomas Brambilla Gallery is proud to present Lynda Benglis – Nutty Romance, the second solo exhibition by the renowned American artist at the gallery, opening on March 28th, 2025.
This new show features a series of 15 unique sculptures created specifically for the occasion, made from marble and onyx and crafted in the historic city of Carrara, Italy.
Known for her fearless exploration of materials and her ability to push forms to their physical limits, Benglis continues to express her iconic style in this new body of work. The sculptures’ bold, dynamic forms evoke a kind of struggle with nature itself, a hallmark of Benglis’s artistic approach. Her art has always been defined by this tension between material and form, a constant search for the boundaries of creativity and expression. The artist’s choice to work in marble once again reflects her desire to continue the dialogue that began with her first exhibition at the gallery in 2016. This new series seeks to establish a sense of continuity and connection between her artistic language and the rich tradition of Italian Baroque art.
The most important Baroque poet, Cavalier Marino, wrote in the 17th century that the goal of the poet is to astonish the reader: “Del poeta il fin la meraviglia” ("The end of the poet is wonder"). This phrase perfectly captures the essence of Benglis’s work. In her sculptures, we witness a marvelous struggle—a clash of forces that results in awe-inspiring forms. Benglis continues to captivate, challenge, and surprise viewers with shapes, colors, and installations that are truly unique in the contemporary art panorama.

Benglis’s works have been exhibited in numerous prestigious museums and galleries worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. With a career spanning over five decades, Lynda Benglis remains a formidable creative force, constantly exploring new forms of expression and materials—such as this latest series of marble sculptures—while maintaining her ability to surprise and challenge both audiences and critics. Benglis’s works are included in major public collections, including the Guggenheim Museum; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art, New York; The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. From 2009 to 2011, Benglis was the subject of an international retrospective that traveled to The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; The Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Le Consortium, Dijon; the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence; the New Museum, New York; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Most recently, she has had solo exhibitions at the Hepworth Wakefield Museum, United Kingdom; Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, New York; Bergen Assembly, Norway; the Aspen Art Museum, Colorado; the Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens, Greece; the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas; and the Turner Contemporary, Margate, United Kingdom. La Galleria Thomas Brambilla è lieta di presentare Lynda Benglis – Nutty Romance, la seconda mostra personale della rinomata artista americana presso la galleria, che inaugurerà il 28 marzo 2025.
In mostra una serie di 15 sculture uniche, realizzate appositamente per l’occasione in marmo e onice, lavorate nella storica città di Carrara.
Nota per la sua audace sperimentazione con i materiali e per la capacità di spingere le forme fino ai loro limiti fisici, Benglis continua a esprimere il suo inconfondibile stile in questo nuovo corpus di opere. Le sculture, con le loro forme vigorose e dinamiche, evocano una sorta di lotta con la natura stessa, elemento distintivo della sua ricerca artistica. La sua pratica è da sempre caratterizzata da questa tensione tra materia e forma, una costante esplorazione dei confini della creatività e dell’espressione. La scelta dell’artista di lavorare nuovamente il marmo riflette il desiderio di proseguire il dialogo avviato con la sua prima mostra in galleria nel 2016. Questa nuova serie si propone di creare un legame di continuità tra il suo linguaggio artistico e la ricca tradizione dell’arte barocca italiana.
Il più importante poeta barocco, il Cavalier Marino, scrisse nel XVII secolo che il fine del poeta è meravigliare il lettore: «Del poeta il fin la meraviglia».
