Making Room is an exhibition exploring the idea of space in relation to the artistic, cultural and curatorial practices that produce it. Accordingly, it brings together works and collaborations by artists, architects and designers from different generations and geographies, each of them stressing the mutual correspondence and influence between social practices and the environments that play host to them.

In all the projects presented, the act of proposing spatial settings and configurations unfolds in line with the desire to establish a bond between past and ongoing experiences – through collaboration, storytelling or simply by posing questions. Hence a domestic environment, a salon or a school, a display system, a cultural association or an art institution can all still be considered as models for facilitating possible encounter and common usership. In this context, the notion of ‘care’ is central to rethinking the way these ‘places’ can be designed, experienced and (collectively) maintained.

‘Making room’ in this sense becomes a gesture that welcomes other practices and knowledge as generative forms of transformation – a way of ‘giving space’ and ‘dedicating time’ to both alliances and conflicts, be that with partners, fellow colleagues, audience members.

Making Room is the research phase of the project Spaces of Anticipation, developed in collaboration with the EACC - Espai d’art contemporani de Castelló in Castellón de la Plana.

Die Ausstellung Making Room erforscht Ideen von Raum im Spannungsfeld raumgenerierender künstlerischer, kultureller und kuratorischer Praktiken. Das Projekt versammelt Arbeiten und Gemeinschaftswerke von Künstler_innen, Architekt_innen und Designer_innen verschiedener Generationen und geographischer Kontexte, die den Wechselwirkungen zwischen Formen sozialer Praxis und den Umfeldern, die sie aufnehmen, Ausdruck verleihen.

In den gezeigten Arbeiten scheint die Aktion, mit der räumliche Konfigurationen und Setting erzeugt werden, mit dem Bedürfnis einherzugehen, Erfahrungen der Vergangenheit mit aktuellen zu verknüpfen: Ein In-Beziehung-Setzen, das sich in Kollaborationen, Erzählungen oder schlicht darin realisiert, dass Fragen gestellt werden. Eine Wohnsituation, ein Salon oder eine Schule, eine Display-Anordnung, eine kulturelle Vereinigung oder eine Kunstinstitution stellen weiterhin Modelle dar, um Begegnungen und Formen gemeinschaftlicher Nutzung zu ermöglichen. Da es neu darüber nachzudenken gilt, wie diese Orte gestaltet, erfahren und (gemeinschaftlich) erhalten werden können, wird im Rahmen von Making Room der Begriff der „Care“ produktiv gemacht (zu deutsch Pflege, Aufmerksamkeit, Sorge, Obhut, Betreuung).

Die Handlung des Raum-Schaffens (‘making room’) wird in diesem Sinne zu einer Geste der Gastfreundschaft gegenüber anderen, transformatorischen Praktiken und Wissensformen. Gleichzeitig behauptet sich hierin eine Weise, Allianzen ebenso wie Konflikten “Raum zu geben” und “Zeit zu widmen” - mögen diese nun zwischen Partner_innen, Arbeitskolleg_innen oder Publikumsteilnehmer_innen herrschen.

Making Room ist ein Teil der Erarbeitungsphase zum Projekt Spaces of Anticipation, eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem EACC - Espai d`art contemporani de Castelló in Castellón de la Plana.

Making Room è una mostra che apre un'indagine sull'idea di spazio attraverso pratiche artistiche, culturali e curatoriali che lo producono.
Il progetto mette insieme opere e collaborazioni tra artisti, architetti e designers, da differenti generazioni e geografie, che evidenziano la corrispondenza e la mutua influenza tra pratiche sociali e gli ambienti che le ospitano.

Nei progetti presentati, l’azione di proporre allestimenti e configurazioni spaziali sembra svilupparsi in parallelo al desiderio di stabilire un legame tra esperienze passate e presenti; un legame che si realizza attraverso la collaborazione, il racconto o semplicemente ponendo domande. Pertanto, un ambiente domestico, un salon, una scuola, un dispositivo di display, un'associazione culturale o un’istituzione artistica, sono ancora modelli a cui guardare per favorire incontri e forme di utilizzo comune. In questo senso il concetto di “cura” è centrale per ripensare il modo in cui questi luoghi possono essere concepiti, esperiti e in seguito (collettivamente) mantenuti.

“Making room” diventa quindi un gesto di accoglienza verso altre pratiche e saperi, come forme generatrici di un cambiamento – un modo per “dare spazio” e “dedicare tempo” ad alleanze e conflitti, siano essi con partners, compagni di lavoro o membri del pubblico.

Making Room è parte della fase di ricerca per il progetto Spaces of Anticipation, sviluppato in collaborazione con EACC - Espai d`Art Contemporani de Castelló a Castellón de la Plana.
