MILANO – Dalla fotografia alla pittura, e ritorno. Fra il 2 e il 17 marzo, la Galleria Gabriele Cappelletti di via Brera a Milano presenta i “Dipinti sull’acqua” di Marta Nijhuis. Dipinti o fotografie, dunque? Fotografie che sembrano dipinti, scatti rubati alla superficie dell’acqua, immagini astratte dal loro contesto e talvolta rielaborate pittoricamente dalla giovane artista milanese, al suo debutto come fotografa.
“La mia ultima mostra presso Cappelletti – spiega Nijhuis – era intitolata “Riflessi(oni)” e prendeva le mosse dall’osservazione di quelle affascinanti evoluzioni nelle quali le architetture si esibiscono quando trovano una superficie in cui specchiarsi. La ricerca evolve e diviene, sempre diversa, benché non diverso ne sia l’intento. Ecco dunque che il mio specchio è ora l’acqua: abissale e superficiale, cristallina e torbida, benigna e ferale. Insomma, riflettendo o speculando, è allo specchio che volgo lo sguardo”. Dopo gli specchi cittadini – vetrine, facciate riflettenti, superfici cromate – che hanno accompagnato sin qui la sua ricerca pittorica, l’artista sceglie di concentrarsi sugli specchi movimentati dell’acqua, questa volta servendosi della fotografia, che di quegli specchi coglie l’irripetibile contingenza.
“Riflettendo sull’acqua – nota infatti Marta Nijhuis -, capita d’immaginare figure volute dal caso, e immaginandole capita di vederle: dipinti meravigliosi e fugaci. Dalla pittura mi sposto quindi alla fotografia, perché la fotografia coglie un istante del divenire, e da quell’istante il divenire divampa, vieppiù debordante nella fissità dell’immagine. Così, i Dipinti sull’acqua si scoprono fotografie. Ma anche, […] posso dire che nella fotografia non smetto di cercare la pittura: per questo fino all’ultimo ho voluto riservarmi la possibilità di intervenire pittoricamente sulle opere, in un dialogo inesausto con l’immagine, come inesausto è il liquido moto dell’acqua”.

Nata da padre olandese e da madre italiana, Marta Nijhuis è cresciuta a Milano, dove ha conseguito la Maturità Artistica, svolto un periodo di apprentissage in pittura presso svariati ateliers, e ottenuto la Laurea in Filosofia e la Laurea Specialistica in Scienze Filosofiche presso l’Università Statale. Spostatasi in Francia, ha arricchito la sua preparazione con un periodo di studi all’Université “Jean Moulin” di Lione. Attualmente svolge la sua attività di pittrice e fotografa fra la Francia e l’Italia, collaborando altresì con varie università lionesi come docente di Estetica e Teoria delle immagini. I suoi dipinti e disegni, spesso utilizzati come immagini di copertina per libri e riviste specializzate, sono stati esposti in numerose gallerie e associazioni culturali italiane, fra cui ricordiamo la Galleria Cappelletti a Milano e la Fondazione Correggiari per Telethon Italia, a Bari in occasione della Fiera del Levante.
Molti suoi lavori si trovano inoltre esposti in varie collezioni private in Italia, Francia, Svizzera e Stati Uniti d’America.

MILAN – From photography to painting and back again. Between March 2nd and March 17th, the Gabriele Cappelletti Gallery in Via Brera, Milan, presents Marta Nijhuis’ “Paintings on Water”. Paintings or photographs, then? Photographs that look like paintings, snapshots taken from the surface of water, images abstracted from their context and sometimes pictorially elaborated by the young Milanese artist.
“My last exhibition at Cappelletti’s was entitled ‘Reflections’ and its standpoint was the observation of those fascinating movements performed by the architectural structures when they find themselves in front of a reflecting surface. The research develops and becomes, always different, although not different may be its aim. Hence, my mirror is now water: abyssal and superficial, crystalline and turbid, benignant and feral. Reflecting or speculating, it is to a mirror that I turn my eye”. After the urban mirrors – namely windows, reflecting façades, chromium-plated surfaces –, which have accompanied so far her pictorial research, the artist chooses to focus on the restless mirrors of water. This time through photography, which captures the unrepeatable contingency of those mirrors.
“By reflecting over the water – Marta Nijhuis remarks – one happens to imagine figures allowed by chance, and by imagining them, one happens to see them: beautiful and fleeting paintings. From painting, I move on to photography, since photography gathers an instant of the becoming, and from that instant the becoming blazes, overflowing in the fixity of an image. Thus, those “Paintings on Water” happen to be snapshots. Still […] I can say that within photography I never cease to look for painting, which is why, until the last minute, I gave myself the possibility to intervene pictorially on the artworks, in an inexhaustible dialogue with images, as inexhaustible is the liquid motion of water.”

Born of Dutch father and Italian mother, Marta Nijhuis was raised in Milan, where she attended Art College, spent an apprentissage period at several painting ateliers and achieved a BA in Philosophy and an MA in Philosophical Sciences at the State University. By moving to France, she enriched her preparation with a period of studies at the “Université Jean Moulin” of Lyon. At present, she works as a painter and a photographer between France and Italy, and collaborates with various Lyonese Universities as a lecturer of Aesthetics and Theory of Images. Her paintings and drawings, which have often been used as cover-sleeve images for books and scientific reviews, have been exposed in several Italian art galleries and cultural associations, such as the Cappelletti Gallery in Milan and the Correggiari Foundation for Telethon Italia, in Bari in occasion of the Fiera del Levante. Many of her works are on show in several private collections in Italy, France, Switzerland and the United States of America.
