Dopo il grande successo della mostra alla Gam di Torino lo scorso inverno, Raffaella Cortese è orgogliosa di presentare la prima personale in una galleria italiana di Martha Rosler. In mostra lavori realizzati in periodi diversi e che indagano differenti tematiche care all’artista. In mostra lavori realizzati in periodi diversi e che indagano differenti tematiche care all’artista. Il principio guida è l’attenzione della Rosler alla rappresentazione della vita quotidiana, più spesso intesa dinnanzi allo svolgersi di eventi su scala mondiale
Martha Rosler è una della più importanti figure nella scena artistica dagli anni ’60 ad oggi, nel suo lavoro pionieristico e sperimentale ha utilizzato diversi media: dal video alla fotografia, dall’installazione alla performance, al testo-fotografico fino a scritti critici. Il suo lavoro si è spesso interessato alla vita sociale e alla sfera pubblica manifestando spesso precise posizioni rispetto a temi quali il femminismo e la guerra.
Tra i lavori più noti della Rosler si riconoscono i fotocollage della serie Bringing the War Home (1967-72), che uniscono immagini di guerra a interni domestici confortevoli ed eleganti.
All’inizio dell’invasione dell’Iraq da parte degli USA, Rosler ritorna sulla serie degli anni ‘ 70, attualizzando i foto collage con nuovi spazi, tecnologie e la rappresentazione stessa della guerra, come è facile intuire in Prospect for Today, Point and shoot o Invasion (2008).
Retrospettive di Martha Rosler sono state realizzate in Europa e a New Yok, tra 1998 and 2000, al New Museum e allI’International Center of Photography. Nel 2007 Il Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts ha dedicato una mostra solo ai suoi fotocollage.
I suoi lavori sono stati esposti recentemente alla Biennale di Singapore, WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution al The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, PS1 in Queens, UnMonumental al The New Museum, New York, Documenta 12 e Skulptur Projekte Münster, nel 2007; e Ambitions d'Art at Institut d'Art Contemporain a Villeurbanne, Francia, nel 2008.
I suoi scritti sono stati pubblicati sia in cataloghi che su riviste e 14 sono i suoi libri distribuiti in diverse lingue sulla sua produzione fotografica, di saggi e di testi. Decoys and Disruptions: Selected Writings, 1975-2001, un libro di saggi scritti da Martha Rosler è stato pubblicato dalla MIT Press nel 2004 (ristampato, 2008). Altri progetti includono la Biblioteca di Martha Rosler -Martha Rosler Library- , una mostra itinerante di 8.000 volumi provenienti dalla collezione di Martha Rosler e il progetto If you lived here still in collaborazione con e-flux.
Martha Rosler è nata a Brooklyn, dove vive e lavora. Ha insegnato al M.F.A. dell’ University of California, San Diego, e al B.A. del Brooklyn College. Il suo lavoro è nelle collezioni dei maggiori musei internazionali tra cui: the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Victoria and Albert Museum di London, e le Generali Foundation in Vienna. Martha Rosler è costantemente invitata a tenere conferenze e convegni in tutto il mondo.

After Martha Rosler’s comprehensive exhibition at Gam, Turin, this past fall and winter, Raffaella Cortese is delighted to announce the artist’s first Italian gallery-based solo show. The exhibition will bring together a wide range of works covering several periods and fields of interest in the artist’s oeuvre. The guiding principle is Rosler’s attention to representations of everyday life, often understood against a background of world events.
Martha Rosler has been an important figure in art since the 1960's, contributing groundbreaking works in media including video, photography, installation, performance, photo-text and critical writing. Her work addresses social life and the public sphere, often staking out feminist and anti-war positions. She has been included in numerous international exhibitions, most recently Singapore Biennal, WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, PS1 in Queens, and other venues, UnMonumental at The New Museum in New York, Documenta 12 and Skulptur Projekte Münster, all in 2007; and Ambitions d'Art at Institut d'Art Contemporain in Villeurbanne, France, in 2008.
Among Rosler's best-known works are her photomontages from the series Bringing the War Home: House Beautiful (1967-72), which set war scenes against images of domestic comfort and high design. In the wake of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Rosler revisited the photomontage format, updating it to reflect the new spaces and technologies of war and its representations, for example Prospet for Today, Point and shoot and invasion (2008).
Martha Rosler's retrospective was shown in five European cities and in New York at the New Museum and the International Center of Photography between 1998 and 2000. A solo exhibition of her photomontages was held at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts in 2007. Her writing has been published widely in catalogues and magazines, and she has published 14 books, in several languages, of photographs, texts, and commentary. Decoys and Disruptions: Selected Writings, 1975-2001, a book of Rosler's essays, was published by the MIT Press in 2004 (reprinted, 2008). Other projects include the Martha Rosler Library, a traveling exhibition comprising 8,000 volumes from Rosler's collection and If you lived here still in collaboration with e-flux.
Martha Rosler was born in Brooklyn, where she lives and works. She holds an M.F.A. from the University of California, San Diego, and a B.A. from Brooklyn College. Her work is in the collections of major international museums, including the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Generali Foundation in Vienna, among many others. She has lectured extensively in the U.S. and all over the world.
