Giovedì 6 luglio 2017 alle ore 18.00, presso il Museoteatro della Commenda di Prè, inaugurazione della mostra fotografica “Al di là dell’acqua”, 14 opere del fotografo Massimiliano Camellini realizzate all'interno di navi cargo, curata da Andrea Tinterri, critico e direttore del gruppo BAG Gallery, con allestimenti a cura di Nicola Pinazzi, architetto partner del team. Scatti di luoghi privati, sull'organizzazione di un guscio in cui vivere, cabine, letti, comodini carichi di ricordi, tavole pronte per un pasto. Un labirinto di stanze all'interno del quale orientarsi, un oblò o una finestra per una vista in continuo cambiamento. Presenzieranno all'opening, il giorno 6 luglio alle ore 18: Angelo Chiarlo, Branch Manager Shipping Group M.O.L., Donatello Bellomo, scrittore ed autore di "L'uomo del cargo", Emanuele Messina in rappresentanza della famiglia Messina, Marina Mannucci, relazioni esterne del Mu.MA.
Per l’occasione, performance di Mario Mariani, piano-artist.
La mostra è accompagnata dal catalogo in italiano e inglese edito da Greta's Books con le immagini dell'intero progetto.
L’evento, con i patrocini della Regione Liguria, del Comune di Genova, della Camera di Commercio di Genova, del Capitolo Italiano della Royal Photographic Society, e del Laboratorio di Storia Marittima e Navale – DAFIST (Dipartimento di Antichità, Filosofia e Storia) dell'Università di Genova, è organizzato da BAG Gallery (Parma – Pesaro), in collaborazione con Mu.MA – Musei del Mare e delle Migrazioni, Associazione Promotori Musei del Mare e della Navigazione, Cooperativa Solidarietà & Lavoro, Associazione Zeitgeist Group e Doc SAI – Archivio Fotografico del Comune di Genova.
Ingresso fino ad esaurimento posti all’inaugurazione, visitabile fino al 7 settembre 2017.
L’esposizione è il risultato di un lungo lavoro, un percorso fotografico durato oltre quattro anni che ha visto come oggetto d’indagine gli interni di numerose navi cargo, appartenenti a compagnie di nazionalità diverse. Massimiliano Camellini, partendo dalla sollecitazione letteraria di Novecento di Alessandro Baricco, ha restituito gli spazi del lavoro e del riposo di importanti navi cargo, piccole città stato che, per un lungo periodo dell’anno, galleggiano sull’oceano, lontane dalla terra ferma e dalle sue regole. Il progetto ha messo in evidenza – attraverso oggetti, simboli, piccoli feticci – il tentativo di ricostruire una quotidianità perduta, una stabilità all’interno di una piattaforma in continuo movimento. Ad essere inquadrati sono gli spazi e gli oggetti del comando, ma anche e soprattutto i luoghi privati, le cabine, i letti con a fianco comodini carichi di ricordi, tavole pronte per accogliere un nuovo pasto, corridoi a dividere il riposo dei temporanei abitanti. Un labirinto di stanze all’interno del quale orientarsi, dove spesso compare un oblò o una finestra, ma volutamente riprese attraverso un forte controluce: non c’è possibilità di geo localizzare la nave, s'intravvede qualcosa, ma l’atmosfera è ovattata. Camellini ha volutamente separato l’interno della piattaforma da tutto ciò che risiede al di fuori, due piani differenti, difficilmente conciliabili. Quello che interessa al fotografo è quello che succede dentro alla città, l’organizzazione di un nuovo spazio, l’adattamento a nuove regole, la ricostruzione di un proprio guscio in cui vivere. In nessuna immagine compare l’uomo, ma sono gli spazi e gli oggetti stessi a metterlo in primo piano, ad aspettarlo come una presenza momentaneamente sospesa.
Il Museoteatro della Commenda di San Giovanni di Prè è stato scelto come sede espositiva, perché si affaccia sul porto antico di Genova, creando un’ideale continuità tra le immagini del progetto e la realtà del lavoro, delle lamiere del cargo, dei marinai protagonisti del racconto. Una tappa obbligata in una città, come quella di Genova, che racchiude il significato del cambiamento di un mestiere, del lavoro del marinaio, dello sforzo commerciale di mediazione. Un dialogo tra restituzione, fotografia e realtà, in una sinergia espositiva dove il confine diventa labile e volutamente ambiguo.
La mostra è accompagnata da un libro di grande formato, a mo’ di diario di bordo: ‘Al di là dell’acqua‘, in italiano e inglese edito da Greta‘s Books che, oltre alle immagini dell’intero progetto, racchiude un'introduzione critica del curatore della mostra Andrea Tinterri, un intervento dell’antropologo Fabio Dei dell’Università di Pisa e un racconto inedito dello scrittore Donatello Bellomo. Il percorso editoriale chiarisce la complessità di un lavoro ampio e dall’interesse multidisciplinare.
Durante il periodo espositivo, in programma altri due eventi, collaterali:
- giovedì 13 luglio 2017 alle ore 18.00 presentazione del libro “Al di là dell’acqua” alla presenza del fotografo Massimiliano Camellini, dell’antropologo dell’Università di Pisa, Prof. Fabio Dei e del curatore della mostra Andrea Tinterri;
- mercoledì 7 settembre 2017 ore 18.00 conferenza sul tema “La gente di mare tra passato e futuro” con la partecipazione del Prof. Luca Lo Basso, Direttore del Laboratorio di Storia Marittima e Navale - DAFIST (Dipartimento di Antichità, Filosofia e Storia) dell'Università di Genova.
Si ricorda che il progetto "Al di là dell'acqua" sarà presentato a Londra presso Brick Lane Gallery, e in seconda tappa presso Withers Solicitors, durante il mese di Maggio 2018.

MASSIMILIANO CAMELLINI (Venezia, 1964). Negli anni novanta si avvicina alla fotografia di ricerca. Dal 2001 realizza progetti costituiti da serie di opere dedicate a temi universali. La prima serie è dedicata agli istinti e sogni dell’uomo: appartengono a questo ciclo Oltre le Gabbie (2001), I Volanti (2004), Duel (2006), Nuove Arene (2009), Il laboratorio dell’ossessione (2010), Ore 18.00, l’orario è finito (2012) e l'ultimo Al di là dell'acqua (2016). Segue frammenti nel tempo: una ricerca nella realtà contemporanea di segnali spazio-temporali per un’indagine antropologica dell’evoluzione dei contesti urbani: Tram-Frame è il primo lavoro del ciclo. Le sue foto sono conservate in musei di tutto il mondo. Ha esposto in Europa e Far East. Vive e lavora tra Reggio Emilia e Milano.

On Thursday 6 July at 6 pm at the Museoteatro della Commenda di Prè, the inauguration of the photographic exhibition “Al di là dell’acqua”, 14 artworks by the photographer Massimiliano Camellini, images taken inside the cargo vessels, curated by Andrea Tinterri, art critic and director of the group Bag Gallery, and with staging by Nicola Pinazzi, architect and team's partner. Photographic shots inside domestic places, around the organization of a shell of life, where we can find cabins, beds, bedside cabinets full of memories, tables ready for a meal. A labyrinth of rooms where we have to orient ourselves, a porthole or a window for a view in continuous change. On the opening night, on July 6th, at 6 p.m., shall be present Angelo Chiarlo, Branch Manager M.O.L. Shipping Group, Emanuele Messina on behalf of family Messina, Donatello Bellomo, writer and author of "The man of cargo", and Marina Mannucci, external relations of Mu.MA.
In that occasion, performance also by Mario Mariani, piano artist.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue in English and Italian published by Greta's Books containing all the images of the project.
The event, which will run until 7 September 2017, has been organised by BAG Gallery (Parma – Pesaro) in collaboration with the Mu.MA – the Museum of the Sea and Migration, the Association Promotori Musei del Mare e della Navigazione, and the Cooperativa Solidarietà & Lavoro, Doc SAI – Photographic Archive of Municipality of Genova and with the patronage of the Region of Liguria, the Municipality of Genova, the Genova Chamber of Commerce, the Zeitgeist Group Association, the Italian Chapter of the Royal Photographic Society and the Laboratory of Maritime and Naval History - DAFIST (Department of Antiquity, Philosophy and History) at the University of Genova.
The exhibition is a result of a long work, a photographic project which took place over a period of four years and which examined the interiors of a large number of cargo ships belonging to companies from various nations. Taking his cue from the literary influences of Novecento by Alessandro Baricco, Camellini presents the work and rest areas of small cities which for most of the year are at sail on the oceans, far from dry land and its rules. The project consists in identifying - through objects, symbols and small tokens - the attempt to reconstruct a daily life that has been lost, a sense of stability within a constantly moving platform. The subjects of the photographs are the command areas and objects, but also, and above all, the private areas, the cabins, the beds, flanked by side-tables full of memories, tables set for a new meal, corridors which divide the rest periods of the temporary inhabitants. A labyrinth of rooms to navigate, where a porthole or window can often be seen, but deliberately photographed against a strong backlight: it is impossible to understand the geographical location of the ship, something can be glimpsed, but the atmosphere is muffled. Camellini had deliberately separated the interior of the platform with all that lies outside, two different levels that are not easily reconciled. What interests the photographer is that which takes place within the city, the organisation of a new space, the adaptation to new rules, the reconstruction of a personal ‘shell’ in which to live. People do not appear in any of the images, but they are represented by the spaces and the objects themselves, which await their owners, a momentarily suspended presence.
The spaces of the Museoteatro della Commenda di San Giovanni di Prè, which has been selected to host the exhibition, look out over the old port of Genova, creating an ideal sense of continuity between the images from the project and the reality of the work, the hulks of the cargo ships and the sailors who are the subjects of the work. An obligatory port of call in a city such as Genova, which represents the significance of the changes that take place in a profession, in the work of sailors, and in this crossroads of trade and commerce. A dialogue between photography and reality, in a synergy where the confines between the two become ephemeral and deliberately ambiguous.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a large format book, as a logbook, ‘Al di là dell’acqua‘, in English and Italian, published by Greta’s Books which, as well as the images from the entire project, also contains a critical introduction by the exhibition curator, Andrea Tinterri, a piece by the anthropologist Fabio Dei from the University of Pisa, and a never-before published story by the writer Donatello Bellomo. An editorial journey which clarifies the complexity of a wide-ranging project of multi-disciplinary interest.
During the period of the exhibition there will be two collateral events:
- on Thursday 13 July at 6 pm, a presentation of the book ‘Al di là dell’acqua” with the photographer Massimiliano Camellini, Professor Fabio Dei, an anthropologist from the University of Pisa, and the exhibition curator Andrea Tinterri.
- on Wednesday 7 September at 6 pm, a conference on the theme “The sea people between past and future” with the participation of Professor Luca Lo Basso, Director of the Workshop of Maritime and Naval History - DAFIST (Department of Antiquity, Philosophy and History) at the University of Genova.
We remind that the project "Al di là dell'acqua" will move to London, at Brick Lane Gallery and with a second venue at Withers Solicitors, on May 2018.

MASSIMILIANO CAMELLINI (Venice, 1964). During '90 he approached a research photography. Since 2001 he has developed series of works dedicated to univeral themes; the first series is dedicated to the instincts and dreams of mankind: this cycle includes the works Oltre le Gabbie (2001), I Volanti (2004), Duel (2006), New Arenas (2009), Laboratory Obsession (2010), 6 pm, the working time is over (2012), and the last one, Al di là dell'acqua (2016). The following project, fragments in time: a research around the contemporary age finding out time-space signals for an anthropological survey on the evolution of the urban environment: Tram-Frame is the first work of this cycle. His artworks are included in the permanent collections of museums worldwide. Exhibited throughout Europe and Far East. He lives and works between Reggio Emilia and Milano.

BAG GALLERY was born on 2013, with a first location in Pesaro and after that with a new branch in the city of Parma (Italy). The stylistic research is concentrated on contemporary art with a peculiar attention to photographic language.
