Matilde Cassani – It’s just not cricket

“It’s just not cricket” conclude il periodo di ricerca organizzato congiuntamente da ar/ge kunst, Bolzano e Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen, Innsbruck che ha portato la Cassani a visitare la macro-regione a cavallo del confine Italo-Austriaco in numerosi intervalli tra il 2016 e il 2018[2].

La mostra “It’s just not cricket” è più di una semplice esposizione di oggetti e attrezzature riconducibili allo sport del cricket, come in realtà appare. Il vero significato di questa espressione, esclusivamente inglese come il gioco stesso del cricket, indica infatti che ci troviamo di fronte a una scorrettezza[1].

Una moquette colorata, porte sovradimensionate, una palla e due mazze prodotte rispettivamente in Sud e Nord Tirolo con essenze locali, compongono il set di una partita interrotta, lasciata in sospeso o in attesa del rientro dei giocatori.
Un display-altare presenta la collezione privata di Ali Saqib, con mazze da tutto il mondo, palline e coppe vinte nei tantissimi tornei già avvenuti, a fianco ad una selezione di magliette dei numerosi team che giocano in Alto Adige: Laives, Brennero, Vipiteno, Ora, Bolzano, comuni che hanno le proprie squadre e tornei di cricket che in pochi conoscono.

L’incontro con giovani giocatori di cricket che vivono in questo territorio e arrivano da Pakistan, Afghanistan, India e Sri Lanka offre una tregua alla retorica delle identità, dei confini, del nord e del sud. La circolarità della storia del cricket, rientrato e diffusosi in Europa dalle colonie inglesi, generano l’occasione per interrogarsi sull’utilizzo degli spazi urbani e rurali così come per confrontarsi con altre categorie di tempo, intrattenimento, spettacolarità e spectatorship.

Il 23 febbraio, ore 19, la mostra di Matilde Cassani aprirà al pubblico durante il torneo PSL – Pakistani Super League di Dubai, che sarà trasmesso in diretta.

Ein Projekt von ar/ge kunst, Bozen und Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen, Innsbruck.
„It´s just not cricket“ ist mehr als eine simple Ausstellung einer Kricket-Ausrüstung samt Objekten, die mit diesem Sport zu tun haben, auch wenn es so auf den ersten Blick aussieht. Die wahre Bedeutung dieses Ausdrucks, ausschließlich englischer Natur, genau wie das Kricketspiel selber, erweckt jedoch den Gedanken, dass wir es mit einer Widrigkeit zu tun haben[1].

Ein farbiger Teppichboden, überdimensional große Tore, ein Ball und zwei Schläger, jeweils in Nord- und Südtirol aus heimischen Materialien hergestellt, dies sind die Bestandteile des Sets eines unterbrochenen Spiels, das nun im Raum steht und auf die Rückkehr der Spieler wartet. Ein Display-Altar zeigt die private Sammlung von Alì Saqib, mit Schlägern aus der ganzen Welt und gewonnenen Bällen und Pokalen von unzählig vielen vergangenen Turnieren. All dies neben einer Trikot-Sammlung der zahlreichen Südtiroler Teams: Leifers, Brenner, Sterzing, Auer, Bozen, Gemeinden, die ihre eigenen Kricket-Teams und -Turniere haben und die nur wenige kennen.

Das Zusammentreffen von jungen Kricketspielern, die in diesen Gegenden leben und aus Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indien und Sri Lanka stammen, bietet den rhetorischen Floskeln über Identitäten, Grenzen, Nord und Süd eine Atempause. Die zirkuläre Geschichte des Kricketspiels, das durch die englischen Kolonien nach Europa zurückgekehrt ist und sich hier verbreitet hat, wirft die Chance auf, sich über die Nutzung von städtischen und ländlichen Flächen Fragen zu stellen. Darüberhinaus sollte man sich mit anderen Kategorien der Zeit, der Unterhaltung, dem Spektakel und der spectatorship auseinandersetzen.

"It’s just not cricket" beendet ein Recherche-Projekt, das gemeinschaftlich von ar/ge kunst, Bozen und dem Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen, Innsbruck organsiert worden ist. Dieses Projekt hat Cassani zu mehreren Besuchen zwischen 2016 und 2018[2] in der Großregion um die österreichisch-italienische Grenze verholfen.

Am 23. Februar um 19 Uhr öffnet die Ausstellung von Matilde Cassani während des PSL-Turnieres, Pakistani Super League in Dubai, das live ausgestrahlt wird, dem Publikum ihre Türen.

The exhibition “It’s just not cricket” is more than simply a display of objects and equipment related to the sport of cricket. The true meaning of this expression is, in fact, one of indignation when confronted with an injustice, and is quintessentially English, like the game of cricket itself.

A coloured carpet, oversized doors, a ball and two bats produced with local wood from South and North Tyrol, respectively. These objects create the set of an interrupted game, left in suspension or awaiting the players return. A display-altar presents the private collection by Ali Saqib with bats from around the world and balls and cups won in numerous past tournaments. Alongside, are a selection of T-shirts belonging to the many teams that play in Alto Adige: Laives, Brennero, Vipiteno, Ora, Bolzano, municipalities that have their own teams and cricket tournaments, but that few know about.

Meeting with young cricket players who live in the region, but who have come from Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Sri Lanka, offers respite from the rhetoric of identity, borders, and of north and south. The circular nature of cricket’s history, returning from the British colonies and spreading throughout Europe, generates the opportunity to ask oneself about the use of urban and rural spaces, as well as challenging categories of time, entertainment, spectacle and spectatorship.

“It's just not cricket” concludes the research period jointly organized by ar / ge kunst, Bolzano and Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen, Innsbruck, which has resulted in Cassani visiting the macro-region straddling the Italian-Austrian border on numerous occasions between 2016 and 2018[1].

On February 23 at 7pm the exhibition of Matilde Cassani will open to the public during the PSL (Pakistan Super League, Dubai) tournament, which will be broadcast live.
