La ricerca & sviluppo di Circe sono state rese possibili grazie ad Arts Council England - DYCP Grant, di cui Matilde è destinataria.
Conceived and written during the artist's residency at IUNO, and developed over the course of two weeks of symbiotic and intense collaboration between Cerruti Quara and Faggiano, CIRCE is inspired by the myth of the same name, revisiting it in a contemporary key and challenging the traditional narrative, which has labelled Circe as the most famous seductress-sorceress of classical mythology, "the one who turned men into pigs".
This time it is Circe who tells her story. Free at last to claim her voice, her complexities, her perspective, flying through time to reincarnate herself, with the same power, within the experiences and conscience of a contemporary woman.
Circe as a child at the court of a patriarch father. Circe who lives in harmony with Nature, which offers her the ingredients for her potions. Circe who composes spells that become poems. Circe who goes from a forced exile to one chosen to pursue a dream. Circe the paradox. Circe who does not live for Ulysses but for herself. Circe archetype of a magical, powerful, perfectly imperfect femininity that demands that respect that has been denied her for millennia.
Interweaving autobiographical dimension and epic tale, Cerruti Quara's work thus establishes an analogy between Circe-divinity and Circe-one of us, whose voice echoes those, countless, silenced by fear of the other, by violence, by misogyny.
CIRCE debuts in its first iteration on 6 December 2023 at IUNO, with the following cast & creative team:
