Comunicato stampa
There are just a few weeks left before the fourth edition of the New Generations Festival, the international architecture event curated by Gianpiero Venturini (Itinerant Office) for the cultural association New Generations running in Rome from September 24-26th, 2017. Promoted by the Casa dell’Architettura, with the support of the CNAPPC (National Council Architects, Planners, Landscape Designers and Restorers), the Chamber of Architects, Planners, Landscape Designers and Restorers of Rome and Province, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Rome and Creative Industries Fund NL, the initiative is part of Estate Romana’s programme promoted by Roma Capitale, Department of Cultural Growth.
The festival, which has welcomed, in previous editions (Milan, 2013; Florence, 2014; Genoa, 2015), more than 5,000 participating architects, designers, students, local authority representatives and research institutes, will be hosted within the enchanting Nineteenth century Casa dell’Architettura - Acquario Romano. During the inauguration on Sunday 24th September, from 19.30h onwards, the institutional welcome and the introduction by the curator Gianpiero Venturini will be followed by a Pecha Kucha Night, showcasing a selection of young international talents.
Entitled “Architects vs. Rest of the World”, the event will unite more than 50 young designers and international experts. These include: APPAREIL (ES), Architecture for Refugees (CH), ecoLogicStudio (UK), Emanuele Bompan (geographer and journalist, IT), Ricardo Devesa (editor-in-chief for urbanNext, Actar, ES), ENORME Studio (ES), Fosbury Architecture (IT), Luca Montuori (Councilor Urban Planning and Infrastructures of Rome’s Municipality, IT), Orizzontale (IT), SET Architects (IT), Jean-Benoît Vetillard (FR), U67 (DK), and WikiSpazioPubblico (IT). In addition to this, two keynote speakers will fuel the debate during the evenings: Koert van Mensvoort (Next Nature, NL) and Jose Luis Vallejo (ecosistema urbano, ES).
With a compact programme of lectures, roundtables, workshops and satellite events (projections, video-interviews...), the event spotlights three main themes:
URBAN VOCABULARY & PUBLIC SPACE
A new urban vocabulary examines how architects are increasingly becoming mediation figures in complex urban processes, by proposing new ways of thinking in terms of urban planning and collaboration with communities, and with the overarching aim of reactivating and regaining public space.
NEW ECONOMIES & VALUES
The crisis of 2008 has defined new sustainable and collaborative economic models. New Economies & Values investigates successful, emergent and innovative practices, with particular emphasis on topics such as urban metabolism, circular economic systems and alternative financing models that characterize various large scale urban projects.
DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURES & NEW MEDIA
New technologies and media have changed the way we work, by bringing new professional figures into the architecture sphere. The technology systems that underpin the development and change of urban fabric, and their importance in the field of design, are under discussion.
Within the programme, the National Council of Architects will organize a Focus on Europan: an in-depth study of the effectiveness of competitions for urban transformations, as well as a contribution to the debate on the future of cities. In line with CNAPPC's policy, the initiative aims to unearth a new paradigm for urban quality of life, in a broader project for ecological reconversion and habitat improvement.
Perestrello 3.0 is a workshop curated by Orizzontale, which from September 18th to 22nd, will involve the office and several local institutions in a public, participatory and self-constructed project at Largo Bartolomeo Perestrello, an emblematic venue in the heart of the popular neighborhood Tor Pignattara. Results will be presented on Saturday September 23rd , 2017 at 19.00h.
What’s more, inside the Casa dell’Architettura - Acquario Romano, there will be Press Box, a site-specific installation by SET Architects, which will encompass a reading area curated by mint LIST. A selection of publications, magazines and architecture books from major international publishing houses will be on display. Titles include: AA Publications, Abitare, Actar, Arquitectura Viva, Casabella, dérive, L'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui, Lars Müller Publishers, Living, NAi Publishers, OPENHOUSE, Real Review, Volume.
