Brought together by the artist Simon Keenleyside - Passage engages with the current transitory nature of contemporary practice, stressing the experience of wondering in time, space and mediums. This multidisciplinary show presents the figure of the artist as a traveler whose passage through our cultural times suggests a multitude of possible alternatives to a single route. Through the diverse formats of expression and communication, Passage looks to reflect a contemporary understanding of mobility.

Ross Chisholm's practice is characterised by an exploration into the language and temporality of painting, through a reconfiguration of the medium's conventions, and the creation of composite worlds, where time, place and memory collapse. Using source materials from disparate points in time, such as society portraits from the 18th century, along with found photographs and slides of familial imagery, Chisholm's practice collapses histories and conventions. Forms of portraiture, photorealism and abstraction are investigated to leave the works as objects with an intrinsic temporality, around which webs of meaning and context continually shift.

Susan Collis's work combines a drawing process with installation and sculpture - often creating environments that at first confuse and then delight the viewer. Her practice brings together extremes: the cheap and throwaway with the highly precious, the casual and instantaneous with the meticulously laboured. Her installations at a first glance may seem half-finished or nothing more than the neglected aftermath of a previous show. Only a closer look can reveal that, for example, the screws left in the walls are made of solid gold, and the relevant anchors are made of precious turquoise or that the leak of white paint is inlaid with mother of pearl. The precious materials she uses have no symbolic value but raise the status of everyday objects, reproducing the old "trompe l'oeil" trick that had never been employed for such menial things.

Sigrid Holmwood's paintings of rustic scenes stem from her interest and participation in historical re-enactment groups and are made using authentic techniques from the early modern period (late 16th c). Her research often involves trawling through ancient archives, consulting with biologists, chemists and historians. The farmers, the main subjects of her works, are historic "re-enactors" according to Holmwood whom she identifies herself with: just like them, the artist tries to be as true as possible. The identification with and re¬enactment of peasants are integral part of the project of each painting.

Simon Keenleyside works within the tradition of British landscape painting; he explore the familiar surroundings of Essex, where he grew up and where he continues to live. In a recent move the artist has returned solely to two specific locations; the backwaters and tributaries of the Thames. Having endured numerous trips to just two sites the artist questions the ontological understanding of place and though references to the landscapes remain rife in the artists work, in the last year Keenleyside has further investigated the possibilities of painting; it is as if he asks, What else is there to discover? as the paintings are pushed further towards abstraction.

Greg Rook looks at survivalism in its modern context, in terms of families choosing to disengage and act 'as if'. Through culture-crafting and story telling they are anticipating the collapse of society and constructing 'off grid' lives. There is a link between this survivalist culture-crafting and Levi-Strauss's idea of 'bricolage', and a parallel with the position of a contemporary painter working within our expressive pluralism.

Noah Sherwood chooses potentially inert material, from studio debris to found objects and industrial ready-made items to make his work. His manipulation techniques involve an intense process of transformation to develop complex sculptural and architectural freestanding forms. Sherwood's forms are not fixed, hinting at a keen interest in collage and assemblage and of wider perceptual and phenomenological concerns about the nature of space and objects.

Alexis M Teplin's practice focuses on an exploration into the aesthetics and politics of seduction through painting, sculpture and performance. Within her practice, Teplin offers abstraction as a central theme, drawing from historical painting movements, the eroticism of the Rococo period, the Impressionists, early Modernism and Abstract Expressionism. Adopting the styles and subjects of her forebears through vigorous brushwork and animated colours, Teplin creates a cross pollination of historical applications and depictions, whilst questioning the positioning of the figure and the figurative.

Will Turner seeks to imbue the everyday with magic and otherness of more innocent times in our lives. It is about the simple pleasures of consumption and about themes of belonging, a gentle and romantic nostalgia for teenage pastimes and hobbies. They are images with an appeal to a certain demographic, but also with a universal validity. The images in his collages and drawings are held in a figurative mode of expression with intense colours and a great level of detail.
