La mostra Nocturnes negli spazi di THE POOL NYC a Milano rappresenta il percorso evolutivo della carriera dell’artista americano Patrick Jacobs. Abbiamo seguito fin da subito con istantaneo entusiasmo e avida passione i mondi incantati creati da Patrick: dalla rappresentazione degli Interni della sua casa affacciata su Park Slope a New York passando per i paesaggi monocromi, siamo ora giunti ai Notturni; con grande orgoglio presentiamo la prima esposizione personale dell’artista in Italia.

Negli iniziali diorami la natura è un luogo che Patrick Jacobs ammira, ma da cui rimane sconcertato a causa dell’ambiguità benefica e malefica; ad un occhio attento i lavori storici dell’artista mettono un accento sui parassiti che infestano la meraviglia e lo stupore della natura, rivelandone imperfezioni e deformità, come in noi umani.

Jacobs capisce da subito il dark side del paesaggio, ma i suoi Fairy Rings risalgono ad antiche leggende in cui le streghe durante i sabba ballano in cerchio e bruciano l’erba da cui nascono i funghi. In questa serie di lavori l’artista assolve la parte più tetra e violenta della natura riconducendone la malvagità a creature sovrannaturali.
Per lo spettatore la visione imperfetta della natura genera allo stesso tempo sollievo e curiosità.

La sensualità della natura che nella prima produzione viene celata, nei nuovi lavori dirompe e travolge.
La flora rappresentata è rigogliosa, fertile, lussureggiante ed allude a luoghi surreali e da sogno. Una natura stimolante, allettante, sensuale che proclama un paesaggio inteso come luogo e oggetto del desiderio.
Come un moderno Shakespeare “usa la notte come un mantello” con cui godere dei piaceri di una natura complice, talvolta cupa, talvolta eccitante.
I diorami di Patrick sono al giorno d’oggi popolati da cespugli, muschi, funghi, tronchi che richiamano gli organi del piacere.
Si ha la sensazione che ciò che di giorno appare naturale, la notte si converta nel territorio del desiderio e di caccia della mente dell’artista. Come un eterno Dorian Gray fugge nella notte per assecondare i suoi desideri più reconditi, a volte spaventato da ciò che vede e allo stesso tempo attratto e travolto da desideri irrefrenabili.

I nuovi mondi da sogno di Patrick Jacobs incuriosiscono sempre più lo spettatore, che nell’atto voyeuristico di sbirciare attraverso la finestrella, si sente ancora più intrigato davanti a forme inattese e al contempo riconoscibili e assai familiari. Siamo di fronte a paesaggi di una fantasia conturbante, poetici, folli e seducenti.

Patrick Jacobs (1971, Merced, CA, USA) vive e lavora a Brooklyn, New York. Si è laureato alla University of West Florida nel 1994 e ha ottenuto un MFA presso la School of the Art Institute di Chicago nel 1999.

THE POOL NYC is very proud to present Nocturnes, which showcases the work of the American artist Patrick Jacobs. We have followed Jacobs’ career with great enthusiasm over the past ten years, from our first studio visit with him in his apartment overlooking Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NYC (a source of inspiration for many of his micro worlds) to his monochromatic landscapes and large-scale installations of more recent years. We have now arrived at the Nocturnes. We are very excited to present his first solo exhibition in Italy.

Nature has always figured prominently in Jacobs’ work. In his earliest dioramas, he explored the ambiguous relationship humans have with the environment - a sense of wonder and astonishment, but also an underlying unease. His depictions of weeds and funguses, for example, reveal much about our cultural attitudes towards the natural world. His series of works of fairy rings draw on ancient legends in which spirits danced in circles causing mushrooms to spring up. Here, he conjures up the supernatural and, with it, a sense of fear and magic.

In Nocturnes, sensuality takes center stage as never before. Lush, fertile, and luxuriant flora allude to surreal and dreamy places. In the words of Shakespeare, Jacobs “uses the night as a cloak” through which he can enjoy the pleasures of a conspiratorial nature. And, like Dorian Gray, he escapes into the night to indulge his innermost desires, sometimes frightened by what he sees and simultaneously overwhelmed by irrepressible desires. We are faced with perturbing, poetic and seductive landscapes.

Patrick Jacobs (1971, Merced, CA, USA) Lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from University of West Florida in 1994 and received a MFA at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago in 1999.
