Vistamarestudio is pleased to present Temporary Orders, the first performance-based exhibition by Public Movement in Italy.

Public Movement is a research and performance group that explores the creation of national, social and political identities through public choreography. Since it was established Public Movement has explored the regulations, forces, agents, and formations of identity and systems of ritual, which govern the dynamics of public life and public space.

For Temporary Orders Public Movement invites visitors to participate in a 20 minutes performative exhibition which takes place throughout the gallery. Drawing from their choreographic vocabulary, the exhibition is activated by six performers who form together choreographic monuments in the vacant gallery space. The visitors are led in small groups as the gallery transforms into an arena of physical exchange. The performers conduct ceremonies, short speeches and orchestrated movements that point to existing intersections between art, the art market, modernism, and ideological impulses.

The exhibition features four performances that examine corporal memory as a mode through which we experience historical narratives, and the way these narratives project on present modes of identifications.

At the center of the show is Choreography for a Collection, a new performance specifically conceived for the gallery and based on the group’s research into Italian art made between 1909 and 1945, which was lost, destroyed or disappeared during WWII - often consumed by the same ideology it wished to represent.

The choir is a new musical score composed of various Honor Guard movements borrowed from around the world. It’s a choir of feet stepping in place, turning into a new rhythmic exchange of the distinct state ballet.

Falling Wall is a composition for a wall, three female performers, a short ritual and a sudden collapse. The act of destruction becomes part of the act of commemoration, challenging the fixed form of public monuments.

During the opening hours of the exhibition the performance Debriefing Session: Vistamarestudio, will be activated in a secret location in the gallery. It is a one-on-one meeting with a Public Movement Agent who delivers an account of the group’s research about modern art made in Palestine before 1948. The private session draws out the performative relationship between nation-states and their cultural institutions.

Public Movement was founded in 2006 in Tel Aviv and has been working since with site-specific and time-specific projects in museums, biennials and public space events around the world. In 2018, Public Movement created The Interview based on the Israel Military psychological profiling. In 2017 the performed the durational performance Rescue for the European Capital of Culture, Aarhus and in 2016 Public Movement presented two new commissions Debriefing Session: Guggenheim and Choreographies of Power in the Guggenheim Museum, New York. In 2015 the group’s solo performative exhibition, National Collection, took place at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and in the same year the book Solution 263: Double Agent by Alhena Katsof and Dana Yahalomi was published with Sternberg Press. Public Movement was shortlisted for the Future Generation Art Prize 2014 at the Pinchuk Art Center, Kiev and won the Rosenblum art prize for excellency in arts. The group performed in the Asian Art Biennial, Taipei; Gothenburg Biennial; Berlin Biennial; Performa, New York, Steirischer Herbst Festival, Graz; Hebbel am Ufer Theater, Berlin, Checkpoint Helsinki and exhibited at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; New Museum Triennial, New York; Zacheta National Gallery, Warsaw; Australian Center for Contemporary Art, Melbourne etc.

La partecipazione alle performance, che si svolgeranno in piccoli gruppi, sarà regolata secondo l’ordine di arrivo.

Vistamarestudio è lieta di presentare Temporary Orders, la prima mostra-performance di Public Movement in Italia.

Public Movement è un gruppo di ricerca e performance che indaga il tema della costituzione d’identità nazionali, sociali e politiche attraverso coreografie e riproduzione di codici e simboli. Sin dalla sua nascita, Public Movement ha esplorato regole, forze, agenti, politiche, strutture identitarie e sistemi ritualistici che condizionano le dinamiche della vita collettiva e degli spazi comuni.

In Temporary Orders, Public Movement invita i visitatori, in piccoli gruppi, a partecipare a un “viaggio” di 20 minuti attraverso gli spazi della galleria. Attingendo dal loro lessico coreografico, i performer inscenano cerimonie, brevi discorsi e movimenti orchestrati, evidenziando le intersezioni già esistenti tra arte, mercato dell’arte, il modernismo e impulsi ideologici, mentre la galleria viene trasformata dall’interazione fisica.

Il progetto comprende quattro performance che esplorano il modo in cui la memoria corporea veicola la nostra esperienza e percezione delle narrazioni storiche, e il modo in cui queste narrazioni si riflettono sulle odierne strutture identitarie.

Al centro della mostra - Choreography for a Collection - una nuova performance, ideata espressamente per la galleria e basata sulle ricerche effettuate dal gruppo, relative all’arte prodotta in Italia tra il 1909 e il 1945 che è andata persa, distrutta o trafugata durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Opere condannate a sparire dalla stessa ideologia che volevano ritrarre.

The Choir è una nuova opera musicale composta da una selezione di movimenti eseguiti dalle Guardie d’Onore in diverse parti del mondo. È un “coro di piedi” che marciano da fermi, realizzando una nuova interazione ritmica del balletto di stato.

Falling Wall è una rappresentazione in cui compaiono un muro, tre performer femminili, un breve rituale e una caduta improvvisa. L’atto di distruzione diventa parte di un atto di commemorazione, mettendo in discussione l’immutabilità dei monumenti pubblici.

Chiude la mostra Debriefing Session: Vistamarestudio, un incontro a due con uno dei membri di Public Movement che racconta di una loro ricerca sull’arte moderna creata in Palestina negli anni antecedenti il 1948. Quest’incontro individuale rievoca il carattere performativo dei rapporti tra gli stati nazionali e le loro istituzioni culturali.

Public Movement è stato fondato nel 2006 a Tel Aviv da Omer Krieger e Dana Yahalomi. Dal 2011 Yahalomi è il solo direttore del gruppo. Da allora lavora con progetti site- specific e time-specific in musei, biennali e eventi in spazi pubblici in tutto il mondo. Nel 2018 ha creato The Interview basata sul profilo psicologico dell’esercito di Israele. Nel 2017 ha messo in atto la performance Rescue ad Aarhus, capitale europea della cultura. Nel 2016 ha presentato due nuove commissioni: Debriefing Session: Guggenheim e Choreographies of Power al Guggenheim Museum, New York. Nel 2015 la mostra personale National Collection al Museo d'Arte di Tel Aviv e la pubblicazione con Sternberg Press del libro Solution 263: Double Agent di Alhena Katsof e Dana Yahalomi.
